Will not start

Tried to start the truck, cranks fine (brand new starter), hear the fuel pump and can smell fuel at exhaust, pulled plug and showing spark. Can't find any broken or loose wires and fuses are good. Had driven it after starter replacement and ran great no indication of any problems at all. Any ideas what to look for would be appreciated.

Tach jump up and down when you crank it over?

Re: Will not start

Have you checked the 2 ECM fuses in the fuse panel? Should be labelled A & B. How about the check engine light does it come on with key on?
I run a resettable fuse in mine.

fuses all look good can't find any split wires or loose connections. check engine and gauges light comes on when turn key and the gauges one flashes when cranking

You might wanna holler at somebody smarter than me. The whole tach stays at 200 has got me all messed up. It should go crazy before the engine fires.

Re: Will not start

Going over wires and everything looked good. Decided to try ether. Popped a few times pumped gas and it fired up ran rough for a few seconds, settled down and everything ran fine. After letting it run a while shut it down. Tried to restart without ether. popped a few times but would not start. Am I looking pump or sensor or something I'm overlooking?

Re: Will not start

Was also thinking coil it's msd but the puzzling part is it ran great after started with the starting fluid. Hoping someone has an idea

When you pull the plugs can you smell gas?

Has gas made it to the plug's?. Check fuel pressure? Regulator..

Could be a weak pump. Works but not pumping enough.

Where there's spark, there is fire

Re: Will not start

You could try running a 12V jumper wire to the fuel pump test pigtail located by the distributor. If the truck starts, that means that your fuel pump relay is bad.

If it started and ran on ether, it sounds like the fuel pump did not kick in until there was enough oil pressure to kick in the oil pressure sensor/fuel pump power circuit.

Re: Will not start

tried switching relays and no difference even tried a new one that I know works

I attached a wire the test pigtail with a test light on it. It lit up and when I engaged the starter it would go off. after a few cranks I stopped and I would hear a faint click near the firewall and the light would come back on.

Still won't start fuel pump and regulator are fairly new.

I do hear the pump prime when ignition is turned on and smell fuel on exhaust

Re: Will not start

I have just had a battle breathing life into mine. Have you checked if your plugs are wet or fouled? I thought mine were ok but it seems they were the problem.

Good luck!

Re: Will not start

hmm. have you checked the cranking fuel pressure?

I have to get a pressure tester (everyone I find is like $75) but would it run fine as it did when it started with starting fluid with poor pressure?

Thanks, its driving me crazy nothing looked fouled wires, plugs, cap and rotor are not that old and the ones I pulled looked good, but definitely worth checking each one. appreciate it

Mine is doing the same thing now, I'm leaning towards fuel pump going out. Hurry up and figure it out!!
