Ed makes a post about tires slipping on the rims and Josh ends up sealing a deal to drop off a TTV8 with RPM for tuning.

Not bitching...I'm just amused at how the lounge works sometimes.

im jealous of mike, getting the chance to work on such a nice truck :D

You make it sound like I am desparately searching the forums for new customers :-? All i was stating is that his timing is WAY to aggressive for any boosted application regardless of octane. He is free to do what he wants, but at the same time it's hard to ignore such a potentially dangerous tuneup.

Josh and Big D. have already made the long haul down here to Socal once before, where we tuned up Big Daves stokes built syclone and made another ~100hp from the tuneup he has been working on for the last 6 years. What ecu are you planning on running Josh?

and to keep this thread on topic (sorry ed), i wonder how a transbrake would work now that you have a th400?

Not in the least. I tried to put as much of my amusement in to the post as possible. I missed.

It's threads like these where a lot of the good information is found. Burried deep in page 3. By no means did I mean to infer otherwise.

not to worry about interruption or unrelated stuff in a thread.... heck i'm allready famous for that. besides i think i got the record for causing the most locked threads (kinda big on records and top ten stuff here :D )

but anyway. if i were to blow the rear then i might consider a transbrake. but for now i think a t'brakes shocking the drivetrain and i could start kissing driveline parts adios in a heartbeat. line locks and the 3 coolers seem to work fine staging and building quick boost on the line for now.

SOME THOUGHTS:
Dig has knowledge on the following rims/tires:
Hoosier_Tires.jpg

which were mentioned in previous posts.

Either Nolan, Tony, or John <the 10sec Ty folks> might also have
comments on suspension tuning, since Ty`s are alot worse handling
<due to shorter wheelbase and added weight> (one vehicle has
caltracs, whereas the other has coilovers/ladder setup).

Mike has a good idea <on suspensions and possible transbrake application>.
Dont forget that RPM has a wicked Ty as well, so Twin Turbo "thoughts"
might also be "abound" in his knowledge base <grin>. Way-way back,
people used to discuss the advantages of single turbo conversion on Supras,
but it appears that solving the turbo/lag issues has made this worthwhile
upgrade <ie to Twin Turbos, epecially for race-only vehicles>.

And lastly, maybe Matt Hoover has some "thoughts" as he has a lot of
experience in the 9s and 10s.

mike i am thinking about the big stuff 3, everything i have read, or has been posted on other forums is nothing but good.

Ed it has t-67 gtq non BB with a .96 ar on the hot side. we were actually hoping for a little bit of lag with this set up but didnt get as much as we had hoped. i never thought i would go back to a v8 to be honest after my first mustang was such a turd and my v6's and 4 cylinders were always pretty quick but after seeing how much power you can make with such little stress on the motor, i cant wait to build another for a chevy II

mike is the man just like he said we hauled spanke's truck all they way down to socal and him and the other guy put a tune on the truck that kicked ass, solved a fuel issue, and wideband problem, plus made it nice and driveable. i dont think i would have anyone else tune it but mike and the guy from R&D. I wish i would have not been so tired then i coul dhave watched more instead of sleeping on the couch. :D just dont hang out there after dark :agrue:

smaug anytime you wanna come over and help change plugs on it your more than welcome its worse than a v6 if you can beleive that, everthing else is sweet, its set up how it needs to be in the engine bay there is a motor, 2 turbos, intercooler, and radiator, thats it :D :D

I would try some of the mickey thompson drag radials, or BFG is coming out with a new line to compete with MT very soon. BFG has waited to release the new line b/c until recently there was no competition for them.

The suspension tuning is going take some time espeically gaining from where you are at. If you drop the bars, it may want to pick up the front end.. Your 60fts are pretty impressive, i think you just need more power.

I'd agree with Mike on the Mickeys... a few local Buick guys have been
running 'em, and they pretty consistently pick up .2 on their 60-fts over
the BFGs. Granted, it's a bit less power than you're making, but they
seem to be a great tire. They don't seem to need much more than a
cleanoff burn to get 'em to stick, either.

RWD guys have gone 9's on the 30x9.5 variety. Maybe like a 325-50R15
in the back, and the 275-50R15 in the front?

FWIW...

Dig

dig are you referring to the mt et drag radial i.e no tube rq'd tire?

Yep, that I am.

They're in the ET street line... any part number with a trailing "R" means
radial. They have radials in their ET drag line, but they're plenty big.

Regarding the wheels for 'em...

I've been running Weld 15" x 8" rims with Hooosier Quicktimes. All told, it
saves 14 lbs + per wheel.

The backspacing I run is 4.5" and 5.5"... but what it really needs is a
5.5" and a 6.5".

Which, as it happens, is what Mickey Thompson now makes in their
ET Drag wheels:

http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/racewheels.html

They're pretty light... 13.4 # each.

Downside to the big radials is that they're considerably heavier than
the bias ply tires I'm running, but the combo is still lighter than the
stock wheels with radials. (45 #/Tire+Wheel, a savings of 5 lbs over
stock)

Anyway, back to the rims... Mickeys are 10" rims, which in a 5.5/6.5 offset
will still leave a sliver of tire outboard of the truck, kinda similar to the
way my hoosiers stick out:

http://digware.lunarpages.com/images/100_0375.JPG
http://digware.lunarpages.com/images/100_0376.JPG

.... which really isn't all that offensive, IMO. A 6.5/7.5 offset combo
might set in a bit better, but I'm wondering if they wouldn't be kinda
tight with the frame. My Hoosiers have got plenty of room, that way.

If you're interested in Welds, Check out summitt part no's:

WLD-96-510282
WLD-96-510284

15x10, 6.5 and 7.5 backspacing, Prostar. These weren't available when
I did mine, wish they had been. Again, a fit check on the frame will
be a must with that much offset.

The 10" Mickey wheels and the ET Street Radials would make quite
a combo, I would think, and should last fairly well also. Unless you
insist on doing half-track burnouts.

If the need for traction was more severe, sub the 28x11.5-15 ET drag
slicks on the rears. You can probably burn 'em enough to get 'em
cleaned up, and once you do, they should hook really well. Would
have to play with the tire pressures to get the transfer case to balance,
though.

Reply to my own post, but regarding the "cheapness" of the Weld
setup...

Cheap is kinda subjective, but new wheels/tires in any form are far
from inexpensive.

Compared to custom, and/or Fiske or the high $$ wheel manus, the
Welds are cheap.

I haven't seen pricing on the Mickeys, so you might wanna give them
a buzz to see what they're going for. I'd be surprised to hear that they
were much cheaper than $180/wheel. The tires will be similar in price,
so figure 350-375 per wheel/tire. So, prolly 1300+ for the set.

Might get lucky shopping for used Welds, maybe in the Buick circles...

Just thinkin' out loud.

hey dig I told harry about all this, told him about the prostars and the weight savings. he told me that the alumastar had a badass look for a badass truck.

told him they were 2x the cost but i would call and find out from weld the weight difference. alumastar is only 10.320 lbs and 10.99 lbs for 8 and 10 inch wheels respectively vs 15 and 16.5 lbs for 8 and 10 prostars. so the 14 lbs plus 5 for alumastar adds up to 19 each x 4 = 76 total

So these wheels with 15inch M/T 8inch in the front 10 in the rear.

should get another 10 from the weight and who knows what from the bigger sidewall and rear width.
