syclone engine build (with pics)

lately i have been getting a tad burned out. i have been spending a lot of time trying to please everyone, and trying to be a good vendor and stuff..... i havnt had time to do some of the stuff that i really enjoy. my project has taken a back seat, been tuning non syty cars, and focusing on vendor and customer relationships, and the day to day grind of being married, working a full time engineering job, and building turbotime. things can easily get out of hand, and its easy for people to lose sight of why they are who they are. its so easy to get really busy, and suddenly everything becomes "work" when its susposed to be fun. anyway i was finishing up the last couple of odds and ends before we drop the motor in, and i snapped a couple pictures of something so simple, yet REALLY made me happy. its things like this, that remind me why i started this ENOURMOUS build project, thats taken over a year to accomplish, in the first place. hope you enjoy this as much as i did. this is a quick snap shot of some of the parts i just got back from the polishers. turbo and fuel rails (yes thats a 5" inlet on that turbo) hopefully the next time you see a picture of these it will be under the hood of my syclone. we just finished the motor, and should have it running soon.

actually my motor has no AC compressor or bracket on that side, so it doesnt matter. also, your turbo looks a totally different from mine. this one is a GT42R 94mm option with standard garrett housings. divided 1.15A/R on the turbine side with a 5" inlet and a 5" downpipe.

i know you guys probably dont care a ton about this, so ill only post a handfull of photos, but if you want to see more just check out my gallery.

heres a shot of the work we did in the combustion chamber

looking thru the valve opening. damn thats pretty.

converting a 2 bolt block to a 4bolt block. the 2 extra splayed bolts will keep the main caps from walking. (we had a problem with that on the 2 bolt motor)
acu.jpg

converted intake manifold to tall port by adding material to the outside and removing material from the inside, so that it would mate to the raised runner heads we are using.

completed short block. ready for heads and intake manifold.

please tell me that stock balancer is not staying on that motor and that the assm wasnt balanced with that thing.

as far as i know there is no aftermarket harmonic damper thats designed for a 4.3. im not gonna use a V8 damper and "hope" its gonna cancel out the frequencies its susposed to. these are brand new syty specific dampers from GM. i wouldnt use anything else.

Youre not trying to "balance" the engine with the damper just kill the harmonics so any damper for an external balance GM SBC will be fine. GM balancers spin SO easy and the timing marks get all gacked up. I bet over the years that between a bud and myself we've swapped out ~30 stock dampers that the outer ring has spun.

The only GM dampers we've found that dont spin, for the most part, were used on engines that the trans didnt shift hard. His old beater ~84 chevy pick up with ~300k on it, mushy trans, and stock 305 is still ok and a hand full of low HP sloppy shifting cars we've owned havent spun the balancer. Just about any F body, vette, whatever either of us has owned had a spun balancer. Even your old TBI 305 RS mullet mobiles balancer was spun (power shifted have we   ) by a couple degrees.

Get a fluid damper for an externally balanced SBC next time you have the motor apart so the rotating assembly can be rebalanced and be done with it.

You should have had the engine internally balanced. You could still get a SFI damper and have the weight matched. I personaly use ATI dampers. Like stated that damper can spin on the elastomer and then your up the creek.
