Sputtering Ty

Started a Typhoon up today after a lengthy 6 month sitting period. It had no hesitation and started promptly. From idle it smokes a little black but will free rev fine to any rpm. Once put into gear and given gas under a load it just sputters, coughs, and surges. Any ideas where I should start? Im fairly new to this...Thx for the patience for the noob

Re: Sputtering Ty

The problem tends to be more of a hopping surge. Im sure it looks crazy tryin to go down the road. Can build 5lbs on the brake, but once let go just a surging hoppin truck. Going to drain tank, swap fuel filter, and try some injector cleaner...any other ideas?

Re: Sputtering Ty

I'll do that as well thx, but what confuses me is how it will free rev with no problem, and only surge and cough when driving (or under a load)....kinda strange. I'll check vacuum lines for leaks though tonight...thx

Re: Sputtering Ty

with free reing the engine just has to rev.

under load the engine the engine has to work!!

X2 on good fuel.

The MAP sensor is the main input for load. I would be quick to verify that the ECM is getting a correct reading. You can also check the vacuum line to the map for restrictions or splits.

Re: Sputtering Ty

Can anyone advise me on the easiest way to drain the fuel tank. On Mustangs we just hook 12 volts to the inertia switch and drain it at the regulator or filter point. Is there a trick like that for these? I might need pictures, lol. Im very new to this machine....THX-R

Consecuitve boost launches :D

Nothing as easy as the mustang sounds sadly.... You can get the fuel pump to work by plugging in a spade terminal to the grey connector on the firewall just below the terminal junction and applying 12v from the same junction block.

Disconnect behind the fuel regulator is not that easy - maybe do it the same time you change your fuel filter.

Have you checked your cap? 5 min job to get it off and see what kind of corrosion you have after some time sitting...

Re: Sputtering Ty

Well fuel system drained and filter changed. Fuel pressure set 48psi with vacuum still connected. Is this about accurate? Stuttering and coughing still under a load.

Re: Sputtering Ty

start with a new tune up . plugs ,wires , cap and rotor . get rid of the old gas . i'll bet it runs like a top afterward .

Re: Sputtering Ty

You're right i'll check it with 2 different gauges then adjust it down. Guess i'll try to tackle the plugs, wires, cap, and button today. Wish me luck, if that dont do it, i'm outta ideas because the check engine light is off?

Re: Sputtering Ty

Check your timing. Pull your spark plugs. Check your wires. Timing should be set with the ECM B wire unplugged. Its the brown wire connected into your ECM. There is a quick connect on the wire under the carpet/passenger side/ on the firewall/under the dash. Fuel pressure should be set with the vacuum line disconnected from the fuel pressure regulator. If that all checks out you might have an injector going bad. You can put a volt meter on them and check resistence. Any codes? Check engine light?

Re: Sputtering Ty

Yes I do have an EGR delete?? Could there be a connection? No Check engine light or codes. But I believe the catalytic converter could be a suspect as well, smelling like rotten eggs?

Re: Sputtering Ty

My truck started sputtering bad after sitting for about a month. Checked my timing and it was jumping all over the place. I pulled my distributor and the magnet fell to pieces after I pulled the cap off. I would take a look in there and see what kind of shape the module and all that stuff under the cap is.
