Re: Nats location for 2013

Why not tag it along the.last stop of the power tour each year.
It ends on a different city every year and stops for two days the last city would create slot of excitement and opportunities for a title after racing bench racing, ad super elevate the interest on these little trucks

Re: Nats location for 2013

GMHTP had been talking to John (BULLY Syclone) most of the year about his truck. They wanted to possibly do a feature on his build. Just before Nats, they stopped contacting him. I don't remember the official time, but I think his best pass at Nats was 9.47 at 147 and change.

You'd think running that time in an awd v6 truck at 5800 ft would be story worthy...

Re: Nats location for 2013

Also, if you are thinking of a track like the 4 Lane, I don't imagine a private rental is all that affordable. Bandimere wasn't cheap and it really affected the number of SyTy's that wanted to race.

We are a non-profit organization run by volunteers. We can just throw down five grand to race. It would make registration fees so high, no one would attend anyway.

Just something else to consider.

Bowling Green, whilst my first and only, was excellent.

Charlotte or near there gets my next vote.

Bowling Green...There is a reason that the big Grand National group goes there year after year. This should be a syty event weekend with only a few extended non syty local things to do. The nats should not be designed to be the annual vacation where one brings their truck for a couple of days but is off checking out the surroundings. Pigeon Forge, Gattlinberg, Chicago etc is to much distraction from the reason we should get together. If people want to incorporate a vacation prior to or after the Nats, that is great,

The Bowling Green Nats setup and schedule was great. Maybe invite the SS454 Truck group to be a part of it...espicially for the track day. They are a small group also and would probably be interested.

Couldn't have said it better myself, my only other though on the group thing was to see if the TTA guys would want to come out, unless they would rather hang out with the GN guys :rotf: But yeah, 454SS/SilveradoSS/TBSS was my initial thought as well if we were going to involve other groups with NATS.

We could do almost anything if members who are seriously committed, aside from death or serious illness, contribute $10 at the beginning of each month starting Jan 1st, 2012 to cover the Nats cost. Come the event, their fees are paid in full.

If we had just 30 members commit (TOTALLY do-able given all the east coast actively passionate members and the number could reach 50-60 members with ease which would double the figures listed), that is $300 a month / $3600 for the year and roughly $6000 by the time Nats 2013 occurs. I think it all boils down to commitment and thinking outside the box. There is not a member on here who could not part with $10 measly bucks a month!!!!! This would leave enough extra to cover trophies, shirts, x-cross acquirement, and cash pay-outs to attract all the Big Digs....even the ones on steroids.

Prior planning is the key but you already have proven you know this

Therein lies your problem. People knew about Nats 12 for two years, even without location, and most still didn't have the time and money set aside to make the trip, with or without a truck. It's a great thought, but in my experience here, you will get 50 people who say it's a great idea and maybe 10 who actually follow through, leaving you well short of your goal. I think if anything spectacular is going to happen, it's going to need some sponsorship, which in turn, will help bring out the Big Guns.

Re: Nats location for 2013

Here are my thoughts on nats in general not to include specific location.

Challenges any nats face

Who will organize it find hotels, track, events, trophies, etc. This is a huge job and not many people will step up and volunteer

Tracks are generally expensive. BG was around 4k if I remember right. 100 trucks is still $40 each and I don't ever see a syty nats bringing 100 trucks racing.

Lets face it syty's are more budget friendly now, older, maybe not as reliable. With that brings a new bred of owners that might not have the same disposable income and/or time available to dedicate to a national event. I don't see a nats truck count setting a new record EVER. Those days are gone.

I think what has happened in the past and partially due to the first point about organizing is the same location was used many times. Why not hotels were known, track known, location known. From an organizing stand point it makes things that much easier to do.

I am just one of many people here and my vote/opinions don't mean anymore than anybody elses but I will say this is the first nats I have missed in over 10 years.

For me it was a decision based on cost -vs- fun. I was looking at 1200 miles each way. Driving my stock ty is $500 in gas, 2 days each way or very very long 1 days. So 4 days of travel.

Nats basically centers around 1 day of racing with a day before hand hanging out. So 2 day event, with only 1 day of activities.

So I was looking at 6 days of being gone, $500 gas bill, another $400 or so in hotel, $300 in food, $150 for event..... $1400 weekend for what I call a 1 day event. And that is driving my stock ty, if I was to trailer the black typhoon the expense goes higher.

With that said moving nats to MY backyard doesn't make sense either except for ME.

The US is big and anywhere we move it will have issues.

Considering active members willing to travel to a nats is dwindling and nats is not a cheap event to fund I see our best chance is to double up with other groups or events to help split the cost. As some may have noticed I did a "pro-touring" event about a month ago with QBNKiller. That event had some major sponsors, entrance fee was $40 for a shirt, meal and 2 full days of various racing. For me it was 100 miles away. I hate to say it but I had more racing fun at that event than I have at ANY nats and my truck was broke for the drag racing. What was missing was more syty friends. Yes you do find other car friends and guess what guys, we all share the desire to burn gasoline its not that bad.

I've made arrangements already and working on having syty specific trophies for next year to give out and plan to invite everybody. $40 entrance fee, I have to organize a few trophies and the event planning is done, aside from trophies its a non issue for me to organize.

My point here is not to advertise this new event, turn it into nats, etc. The point is teaming with another group of some sort cuts our cost in half for the event, our planning now gets reduced, and chances of having other activites to add to appeal of the event and bring more people goes up. Selecting that group has to be done carefully. Teaming up with the "Former DUI Defendants Group" may not be the best choice.

My last topic is I think 4-5 people who are interested should volunteer as a team to setup nats and just make it happen. Voting just adds lots of debate, normally gets no where. In the end those that are organzing it have to make decsions, the rest of us get to sit and throw stones and complain.

Re: Nats location for 2013

What I dont understand is how come there isnt a national club? If there was, there would be dues and committees. This wold also help to fund the site and have some monies for a track deposit. That would make it alot easier. My father started the gto club in nj and ran the national event, and it was a huge pain in the butt. The show was moved all over the country each year just not in a few select locations, there were even regional meets. I would be more than willing to help out. I know there are regional groups on here, but it dosent seem that people want to take charge, other than the same people from what I see. The same thing goes for other sites I am involved with. The internet is nice, but it seems that it has taken the face to face image out of the car scene. I dont know just want to toss in my 2 cents

Dues = people want something for their money. What do you plan to provide and who is to do that?

Nationals has built up a cash flow pool, it just has to be used carefully. A few years ago we started raffles at nats to sell tickets vs just give stuff away. That helped a ton in terms of building up the cash pool. This year an alky kit and 32spline shaft were raffled. I suspect nats was able to leave similar cash in that pool as they started with, which is the goal.

Re: Nats location for 2013

Even though I haven't had the pleasure of attending a Nats yet....I hope you don't frown on my opinion. I completely understand the want to move Nats around to make it more available to other regions....but I honestly feel that lack of participation will end up eventually causing Nats to go away all together. I'm in Houston....and I fully intend to attend Nats where ever it may end up. But I have to think that when it comes to logistics....that it would just be much easier to find a location and stick with it. And I'm sure that there will be some flaming going on when I say that I feel it really needs to be where the most participation is likely. No matter where it is....I'm thinking that I'm going to have to go a long way to get there. But I also feel that for an event that is every other year....that shouldn't be an issue. But not only is it easier from a logistics stand point for the planner....I would also think that it would be easier on the attendee as well. It's just easier to attend a bi-annual event if we can plan on how much money needs to go into the trip and what activities are waiting on us. I guess my main point is...that even though it would be no where close to my back yard....that I would support Nats to be a regular location everytime....and BG looked like it was a really good event with a lot of participation.... Just my opinion ofcourse.

Re: Nats location for 2013

This thread is much more interesting to follow, having a Nats under my belt.

There is a lot of good discussion and all of it will be taken into consideration for the next go round, that's for sure. Due to the change in owner demographic, change in the economy, etc., Nats needs to adjust. I don't think it needs to change entirely, but we certainly need to make adjustments in our planning and such to keep the event going and keep it fresh.

I understand what your saying. With the GTOAA, I think its like 40 bucks a year which isnt bad. You get a monthly news letter, but that died out due to the internet. You get discounts on parts, like with Year one and performance years you get 10% off all orders. Plus you get a discounted rate at national and regional meets for entry fees.
