Nats location for 2013

Re: Nats location for 2013

I didn't make it to Nats this year, I wish I could have, but it would have been a severe time crunch with school starting back soon. The only one I have been to is BG (2009), but I plan to start attending as many of the events as I can after I graduate this semester.

The Seviereville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area would be a great area for Nats, as a result of reasons previously stated. Being in eastern TN, it is close to the Carolinas, so it might not make for a terrible trip for the some of the east coast members, as well as Georgia members.

Re: Nats location for 2013

If Pigeon Forge is a serious candidate, I would recommend we move the actual NATS meet section to a surrounding area that's close to there...maybe Knoxville or some place in between Knox and Pigeon Forge? IIRC, it's about a 45 min drive to PF from Knoxville. I looked and doesn't look like there is a track near PF, but there is closer to Knoxville.

I know personal finances and affordability also come into play while scheduling and researching, and PF is a goddamned tourist trap which = $$$$$$.

There aren't a whole ton of hotels in that area that are big corporate ones. Parking lots are small. Cops there are dicks. The strip is a parking lot. Smog is a bitch.

We could all rent cabins, but then again, we're talkin' about some big moolah there.

Like I said, what about finding some small town in between or outside of a major metropolis. May also give us some "muscle room" if we pump some $ into a small town economy vs a larger city that would probably give 2 shits less about a "smaller group" of visitors...

Just talkin' out loud here...

charlotte, they have the four lane wide race track ! There are a ton of things to do car/truck related.Has anyone ever done a map sort of thing to see were the most percentage of owners are? I think denver was just to far for most of the owners, and giving it a low truck count.I mean isnt the point of the National event to be the best one all year and have the most people and owners attend etc?

Us foreign folk show up on occassion and apparently Canada isn't a state (yet) :D

If you come to London we'll even quell the riots!

Re: Nats location for 2012

ALL: I was simply trying to deduce IF consideration has been given towards the next Nats location. I was involved in planning committees for 14 of my 20+ years in the Army, some of which required planning for 850-1000 attendees. I know first hand the logistical challenges planners face and also the uncertanties (stress) associated with it. Yet, data supports the fact that the sooner advanced well-thought planning occurs, the better the quality of the event.

Should the powers that be decide to seriously consider Pigeon Forge, I will be standing by to assist in any way I can. Same with Nashville or Bowling Green. Even a location 8-10 hours away from here to attend a 3 day event is fine with me but driving 46 hours to attend a 72 hour event doesn't motivate me much. Nats certainly doesn't evolve around me.....just volunteering to help if it comes close by in 2013.

The idea that was tabled suggesting having the Nats in conjunction with another BIG auto event (like the Rod Run in Pigeon Forge) was a good one. Car enthusiasts flood this event and having 40-50 SyTySgt's grouped together would likely raise significant interest/awareness in these trucks. The temps are cool (low 80's) and the leaves sometimes are beginning to change color.

If the goal is to have SyTySgt owners gather, get drunk and attract the law, anywhere will suffice. If the goal is to reunite SyTySgt enthusiasts and enjoy the comraderie of each other, taking into consideration their families desires as well, with the intent to have loads of fun while making memories, Pigeon Forge would rock. May not surpass the scenary of the Red Rocks but the Smokies would come very close!!

Couldn't have said it better.

Not all owners can make Nats due to logistics, so everyone understands. Keeping it moved around is only fair and gives everyone an opportunity to attend no matter the location.

As for piggy backing with another show, I think it would be great. Most of here can also appreciate other venues. Most of us have other projects that are not necessarily sy/ty specific. Most people have no clue what a Syclone or Typhoon is or how rare they are. Showing up at another event would create some excitement and maybe create more sy/ty fanatics such as myself and everyone else here.

It all boils down to us all loving our trucks and getting to drive them while hanging out with fellow friends that share our same passions.

I also fully volunteer my services to help with Nats, or any other show/meet that is relatively close.

Re: Nats location for 2013

#1, what people do at nats has nothing to do with location, there are different groups of people at nats, the idea is for everyone to have fun and to expect a mutual respect and understanding that everyone in attendance has a love for these trucks.

#2, while getting a location good for families sounds like a great idea, how many fathers/mothers want to drive 20 hours to sit at a hot track and watch their kids, or listen to their kids complain. Is nationals kid friendly sure, kids are great and can provide endless entertainment for all. At the same time they can be as annoying as anyone else that doesn't want to be there. To enjoy such an event you HAVE to be ok with spending hours in a parking lot talking about nothing. You have to be ok with people drinking alcohol and laughing loudly, if you aren't don't stay up late and expect something else. If you are going to send your wife and kids off to a water park, why even bother bringing them? save them the trip and save yourself some money, you attend and let them go to the local amusement park without you. I'm not saying don't bring your kids, I'm just saying that we shouldn't have to plan an event because there is an amusement park close by.

#3, it needs to be in different locations, each one has it's own unique style and things to do. The locals in that area help make that specific nats what it is along with the people that attend.

Chicago was huge BECAUSE at the time the chicago members were VERY vocal and very active. Now a chitown nats would bring together a bunch of old friends but i doubt it would be the same, especially since most of us have grown up a bit.

#4, If the drive is more than 10 hours away you are devoting an extra 2 days to the event just for travel, expect this and don't complain. Trust me you'll understand when you are there, driving your truck surrounded by other sytys. The guys that fly in, know the feeling, without your truck a piece of you is missing.

We planned on attending nats this year, but i was sent out of the country for 12 days for work, so it wasn't going to happen. I love nats and I plan on attending in the future, if it is possible.. I am however getting tired of going to the same locations and hanging out with people from the northeast, since as a whole we tend to travel quite a bit more than other groups.

Did anyone from MI, IL, etc attend nats this year? hell in the past I think Wade, Epix, and Gerber are the only ones that have attended, wouldn't it be nice for the regional guys to actually travel to other events. This goes for the Florida guys as well, I'd love to meet Keith and Gary.. What about MikeLee, he runs a business off of sytys and he hasn't attended a single event in what 10 years?

Just sayin..

Maybe there should be a nats every year alternating east coast west coast. Northern and southern this way traveling would le limited to a 1000 miles or less for most. I'd like to see a dyno rental on the show and sine day. What could be more fun than clapping or laughing at dyno results. It would give more to talk about threw the night of drinking too. A track rental is a must. Most big gun owners want to show off there efforts and settle a score or to with other big gunners. All in fun. Most spectator members want to gather ideas from these members as well. My truck isn't the fastest out there but I was answering question about my Ty all day in Bowling green. I don't need a scenic destination I came to see sytys and hang with other owners. I'd prefer an area close to a track in a metro area were a dyno shop can be found not in the middle of nowhere. Just some feed back that might be considered.

we have had a dyno day before, it was fun, but it added quite a bit of expense.. I think only 1 or 2 trucks broke on the dyno..

Re: Nats location for 2013

The same discussion as to location pops up every time the subject of next Nats comes up. We did the first three in KC because it was the most central location in the US that had hotel, track and extracurricural activites available. There were a few locals who helped out but most of it was planned by FAST, mostly Chris Pearson, Adam and myself. We had over 70 trucks the first year, over 100 the next two. It was about a 35 hour trip for FAST and we had at least 11 trucks there each year.

Once it started moving logistics got tougher. Finding new hotel, track arrangement, where the street race scene was. I drove out twice, once in the truck, once w/ a trailer. The third time I flew in and said I'm not going again without my own truck. Haven't been since.

We have meets down here with FAST, or Shindig, where we get more than 30 trucks. I can get 20-25 at my house with a few phone calls. Hard to justify driving a long way, time away from my business costs me and times are tough enough as is. Like everyone else I would like to have Nats in my backyard but realistically it needs to be where the most trucks will attend. I learned years ago that the people most vocal about date and location are the ones who rarely show up. The ones who attend regularly and are willing to step up to organize should just pick a date and place. Not a vote.

I don't care to piggyback onto a big car event. I can see other stuff anytime. Pigeon Forge, Turkey Rod Run, Power Tour etc. are every year. I want to see the trucks and put faces to the names when I attend SyTy events.

Just venting.

It seems like Carlisle Truck Nationals is around the same time. Wouldn't that be a good venue?
I do understand about the family thing, and that is a great point. This has been my biggest reservation for not going. The kids. I love my kids, but they do not want to sit in a parking lot for 12 hours, hell, they dont like going to a car show for longer than 30 minutes!
Piggy backing to nationals would be a great thing. We could do our own thing for a day, and go as a groupd to the fairgrounds.
JUst my thoughts...

Hey Shaun,

changed your thread subject to 2013 to more accurately reflect the Nats schedule and not have people thinking there will be a Nats next year.

Aye Aye, Sir. Thanks ;).

Good points. Considering all the input thus far, I think Charlotte, NC would be an awesome choice. Someone mentioned Pigeon Forge being a money pit (which it is) and I realize not all have excess money to blow. Traffic flow is ridiculous during the big auto meets too BUT if you know the area, there are side roads running parallel to Pigeon Forge with double lane areas that flow well most of the time. Also a great place to settle performance grudges :).

BTW, the 1st Sat of the month in Charlotte brings in a slew of NICE muscle cars, trucks, bikes at a coffee and breakfast meet. A Nats in late August / early Sept would be comfortable and lining 4 Sy's or Ty's up side by side on a 4-lane track would be awesome. I bet Hacking would even show up with his Giant!!!

Re: Nats location for 2013

The problem I see with piggybacking onto another show, is it would detract it from being a SyTy Nats. It would just be a hot rod show, or whatever, with hundreds, if not thousands of hot rods, and 50 SyTys. Good luck trying to get a hotel in Pigeon Forge where all the SyTy members could stay. They'd be spread out all up and down the strip, and it would take you 2 hours to get to the other end to see someone. If it were to piggyback onto another show, I would say do it with the Grand National guys. The cars are similar to ours, to an extent, and those guys would be more interested in what we have done that is unique to the trucks over some old guy in an old '34 Ford.

That's not a problem at all if the reservation is placed in early 2012 for 2013. We know the franchise owners of Days Inn in Sevierville (6 miles from Pigeon Forge) but you guys have surfaced some good points and considering it all, Charlotte looks more SyTySgt Nats friendly. It would be abother 4 hour drive for me and the family but it would be worth it, especially if they have an X-cross location :)

Re: Nats location for 2013

I was really pissed that I missed this years Nats. Truth be told, financially, it would have been enormous as I would want my truck there. Being just northeast of Detroit I would not drive my truck down, I would rather trailer it like I did in BG '09. Since the truck I used is no longer available, it just was to expensive for me this year and my bank account crying for some mercy so I had to pass on this years event. From now to 2 years time I will have money set away for Nat13 so I am already planning to have a boys trip for the 2013 Nats no matter where it is. I will make sure I will be there with my truck. Running or not. With only 1 thing for me that could stop me from going if the event was to be held in September. This is due to work as its our busiest time of the year(student rush) so they don't allow us to take vacation time in September. Now if the numbers vote or go that way for a September event, I will try my hardest to switch shifts to make it work but its not a guarantee.. Any other time, I will guarantee I will be there.

At every event I attend, (Every homecoming since it started, Nats Chitown '02, Nats '09, Hopefully Nats '13) I've had a blast and all my friends that have come with me over the years always had a great time. Though I agree with Bigsmoosh that if my truck wasn't there, a part of me is not there.

In the end, No matter where or when the next Nats happen. I will try my darnest to be there! AND it will be a blast!!!

Having Nats separate is also a good idea. Makes us stand out so magazines like GM High Tech run our meet in the mag. I remember seeing it in one of the circa 2005 issues.
