How did you first learn about syty's?

:D Funny story actually, I was at my buddy's house in 1991, and my buddy worked at the GMC dealer washing cars, he tells me that theres this truck at the dealership he works at thats faster than a corvet 0-60, and I tell him he's full of crap, no f''n way dude. He tells me he was in it when it took off across the parking lot and it pined him to the seat, I just thought he didn't know what FAST really is, so I blow him off.

I go down to the dealer and see this tiny truck with this HUGE pricetag, and think hell no.. Way to much I'm outa here, never looked back.

Well now years later 1997? I'm surfing the cool internet got my nice 56k modum up and running, wow that's fast, and out of the blue I just remember that crap about that Syclone truck, ok.. now I'll look it up and see what it can really do.

I find that same site http://hometown.aol.com/gmcsyclone/stories.html
and read, and read, and read, and read, wholly crap it's for real, and that is a way cool truck... Got to have one. 6 months later I'm a happy camper.

Saw a SY on a turnstlye at a dealership back in 91 and it kind of caught my eye. Did a lot of reading up on them, then I got an invitation from GMC to a test drive in early 92. You were able to drive a Sonoma GT on a wide track, drive a SY on a tight track, then ride shotgun in a TY with a professional driver. After that ride, it was pure lust. I couldn't afford a new one at the time, swearing that I would own one someday.

Now I want two.

I was finishing high school when the sytys were coming out. I remeber reading sport truck and the like, drooling over them back then. I bought a linberg model and painted with the "Syclone Challenge" scheme back in the day too.

Fast forward to July 2000. I had a lifted '87 chev 4x4 that I had become bored with. After reassembling a basket case 86 t type for a friend I figured the turbo deal was kinda cool. He told me to buy a buick, I told him I'm more of a truck guy. His words were "well then buy a syclone".

Two weeks later I picked up #2356 north of seattle. Bone stock a broken. The time since has been a blast.

PS I still have the magazines and the Sy model. :D

When I was in middle school back in 1996, I remember seeing the occasional Typhoon and Syclone for sale in DuPont Registry, and I thought they looked cool. Some of the ads mentioned "Fastest production truck in the world" and the like. I was intrigued, and started noticing them every so often on the street. One day in October of 2000, I was bored and online, so I decided to search for Typhoons and Syclones. I found syty.org, and read through it to find that SyTys were a lot cooler than I thought. I found a link to syty.net, and have been a member of the board ever since.

Last April, a local Typhoon popped up on e-bay, and it somehow got into my head that I was making enough money to support a truck payment, so I checked out the Ty, and it was perfect. Only problem being that I had no credit, and couldn't get financed. So I financed a '95 Saab instead. A year goes by, and I see an ad in a local paper for a low-mileage Syclone. The thought gets into my head that I now have some credit, and if I sold my Saab, I could get what I really wanted. I went and looked at the Sy, and it was perfect. Only problem being that nobody seemed to want to buy my Saab. I kept the Saab up for sale, and coinsidentally found 6 Typhoons, and 3 other Syclones for sale locally. I finally found a buyer for my Saab, and unfortunately, the Sy that I wanted had just sold, so I went to the next truck on my list (another Sy), and when I finally contacted the owner, he told me that he didn't want to sell. The next truck on my list was the green/grey '93 Ty from e-bay the year before, but it had already been traded in to a dealer and then sold. Next up was a '92 black/grey that was in good shape. I made a deal with the owner, and then he sold it out from under me. Finally, I went to Hunter's shop to see if his Ty, which had been posted on this board, was still for sale. We worked out a deal, and I got my Typhoon. Then the buyers for my Saab backed out of the deal. So now I have something to drive when the Ty is broken (twice now in less than 4 weeks of ownership :) ).

Edit: I still have one of those old DuPont Registry ads from '96 or '97. It's a teal/grey '92 Ty that was still under the extended factory warranty. It has hot pink decals. I always wondered what became of that Ty.

Back in 94 when I was 10 years old, we were up at the local track where I was racing my junior dragster and my brother was racing his Cutlass. One of my dads buddies had a Sy running consistent low 12's up there and I thought it was the coolest thing since soft toilet paper. Fast forward to when I was 13 and a kid in my neighborhood got a Ty and I became obsessed. Ever since then I have dreamed of owning a Ty and will continue to do so until I get rid of some projects and manage to save some cash. :D

Heard of a fast turbo truck by GM. Saw one or two Syclones at the track, but didn't know much about them. Got my first close up view of one, actually a white/white '93 Ty and rode in that one. Fell in love at that point. However, I was 18 or 19, if that old, and no money. Then I worked for Stefan Johansson. Some might remember him from Formula 1 and Indy cars, most recently American LeMans series, etc. . . He had a '93 Black/Black Ty, with only 40k miles. He drove it ever once in awhile and he was always trying to sell it to me. But as a full time college student, and working for him didn't pay much. He finally ended up selling it couple years after I quit working for him, and was working for Pep Boys. Well, a guy that was interested in buying it wanted it checked out. So of course, i took it for the test drive. At that point, had to have one. Many years later, as a current parts manager at a dealership, I get a demo to drive. My other car is a '99 Sonoma that doesn't run right now. It's getting bagged, bodydropped, and painted. So, I needed something to drive just in case I lost my job and my demo, or I needed to go out of town, and I can't take my demo out of town or state. So, was about to get a Chevy Colorado, but decided I needed something a little bit more fun to drive, so I acquired a Ty.

Sy~ My first encounter with a Sy was my Junior year of high school. I was riding in my friends Celica just cruising down the freeway, when a "Sonoma" goes by us casually. My friend says no way a Sonoma is gonna beat him so he downshifts and goes flyin by the guy. Then right as we pass him my friend yells out "Oh F*** me" then the Sy just walks us. I then asked him what the hell just spanked us and he told me about em.

Ty~ It was actually related to the first story. My friend with the Celica, his older brother happen to find a Ty for sale at a Dealership out here and bought it. Ever since I saw the Ty sitting in his garage I knew I had to have one.

I drooled over the prototype in '89 in Hot Rod magazine.I kept tabs on the project, and even called 1-800-SYCLONE in Dec of '90, they sent me the Sy poster with the sun setting behind it.It was way outta my price range, but I always wanted one.

My First SyTy Experience

My First SyTy Experience

I remember reading about the GMC Syclone in 90' in one of the automobile magazines of the time, I was in HS then and several months later there was one parked in the HS parking lot. I found out one of my classmates Grandfather(filthy rich) purchased it for him. Foward to 92' and I saw a White/White GMC Typhoon drive past me one day and I notice the same damn kid in it. I guess he traded in the Sy for the Typhoon and his Grandfather made up the difference for his HS graduation. :fist:

In 93' driving by the GMC dealer there were 5-6 GMC Typhoons for sale and I said why not, I am going to test-drive one. :D I could not afford the $31,000 sticker price, but they let me test-drive a Green/Gray Typhoon :p , the salesman let me drive around town and then a little highway time. The best part was getting on the highway from a stop with the patented boost launch, I hit the top-speed getting on I-35, holy-shit! was that fast.

Many years later living in Delaware I drove by a GM dealer, that I drive by everday to get to work and what do I see a 93' Black/Black GMC Typhoon out front. I must of driven by a hundred times and then one day I stopped by. :D The first thing I did was look under the truck for rust and it was perfect, even had the stickers on the swaybars," Made In Canada", the paint was perfect, cladding , wheels, and the tires.

The salesman walked out and greeted me, I asked the mileage, he told me 8,900 miles, this was in 2001. :p I asked him how much $19,000 and it was just traded in on a Z71 Yukon. :drinking: Now I had to figure out how to buy it, still had a new car I was paying for at the time.

The next day I mentioned it to my Dad, who was looking at buying a new Ford Lightning, but wanted more space then a regular cab F-150. He knew what a GMC Typhoon was, so he asked me to take some pictures, that is all she wrote. :D He called the dealer, I wrote a deposit check and he drove up from Florida to pick up the truck. I still have the digital pictures from when we picked it up from the dealer.

So after driving his truck around Naples on vacation I knew I had to get either a Sy or Ty, but it did not happen until I moved to Naples. So once that happened I got on SyTy.net and looked for trucks for sale. Looked at a few here in Florida, but a 92' Red/Gray Typhoon got my attention on the forum, one of the forum members had his truck for sale living in Georgia. I figured the Ty was better for me because I have a 130 lb Yellow Lab, so I knew the added space was needed. After many pictures and emails I send a deposit and drove to Augusta to pick up the truck. :D Now I have been the lucky owner on Ty #0234 for 2 years now! ::thumbsup::

I know, I know, too much information. :D

I remember when I first saw an article in Car & Driver. They raved about the power, looks and of course the PERFORMANCE! 0-60 and Q/M time 13.5 for the SY and 14 flat for the Ty amazing. I remember on e specific quote that said it was the fastest vechicle ever tested form 20-60 mph. Again amazing!! Remember this was the early 90's when 14 flat was FAST ( it still is ). I was always interested in the S-10 V8 swap and once I saw the Ty with the cladding I was hooked. I was 22 years young with a payment on my 89 Blazer and my 79 Z in the garage and, 30K + for the Ty was not gonna happen. I sold the Z to buy my condo but the car payment and mortgage again said to me " not gonna happen ". Fast forward 12 years and I finally am on track to get my Ty. 5 weeks from now I will be married and then the condo goes up FS and I will have the $ for my clean stock Ty. Somethings in life are worth the hard work and the WAIT!

sy~ the first one i saw was in late 92-it was up for repossession(that was my gig at the time)soo i went to his house, but saw him pulling out of the drive,he drove right past me,saw the name on the truck...'G.R.A.B.' (that stands out alittle...ya think?)... soo i whipped a u-e and followed from a distance.but not for long...he saw the wrecker on his street, then agian in his mirror, soo he started toying with me...blowing off lights and then waiting a-ways down the street for it to change soo i could catch up alittle.then he disappeard and reappeard behind me to blow past at what seemed like 100 mph...
then he just BOLTED...id NEVER been lost that quick.he hit rt 495 and was GONE..i dident even have a clue which direction he went,POOF,he was gone....
soo after that i did alittle research, called the selling dealer..found out what it was-i guess only 3 came to that area, soo they knew him & educated me to the little black truck....I WANTED ONE!!!
next day i went to his house agian, parked the wrecker on cross street and walked up... it was in the garage soo i knocked on the door to talk to him...he answers the door in full uniform...hes a POLICEMAN...after some bs'ing he let me in the garage too check it out...it was BADASS!! he had dome some stuff to it-it had no airbox, but appeared pretty stock.it had mounted gauges IN that flat spot on the dash over the ac vents..it looked real nice (cutting holes in the dash... )...he was a cool guy-but he wasent about to give it up...soo i laid off for a couple days, you know, professional curtisy, and let him get it up to date with the bank...

he gave it up, volintarily about 8 months later after getting hurt on the job...not to me tho...my partner picked it up with the ramp truck..

a year or soo later i saw him driving a hopped up GN after he was back to work...he said "you aint gettin' this one!!"
it was a small town soo when he would see me around we would shot the shit ...
i guess he lost the sy because the bank sucked and auctioned it when he couldent pay it off...

that was my first encounter...

When I fist discovered Sy/Tys was when my friend showed me a video of a guy with a white typhoon doing doughnut burn outs. LOL. My jaw just droped.

Re: How did you first learn about syty's?

I went to a toyota dealership when I was 19 to buy a little work truck. My 1972 Elcamino was costing to much in gas to drive and I wanted a DD. The toyota guy looked at me and said " you cant afford any trucks here" No shit he said that to my face. I had 10k in the bank at that time. I went to a GMC dealer on stevens creek. The guy gave me a ride in a nice black truck. I fell in love but it was 24k. He said I could have it for 20K. Still to high. I asked why the other truck that looked the same was 14k. He said its a Sonoma GT. I bought that instead.

Re: How did you first learn about syty's?

I saw a Ty back in 95 I think. Only one I've ever seen. Forgot about them until 98 or so when I got my first S10. Then I came across sportmachines.com and syty.net.
