2 step time?

Re: 2 step time?

What are the specs on your camshaft? Compresion ratio of the engine?
Cranking compression checked? If so, what is it?

Was the camshaft degreed in? Advanced, straight-up, retarded?

Thanks

Re: 2 step time?

Cam specs are as follows:

Lobe sep - 111.9

valve over lap - 7.1

Duration - 216.7

valve lift - .49978

Exhaust

Duration - 216.7

valve lift - .50031

Compression ratio is 8.3:1

Have not done a compression check

Cam was installed straight up

Not sure what all you want but there is some of it. If you have part of the specs in mind let me know I can post the rest. I got the cam from John Gerber and it replaced my KB cam.

I have made a log tonight but it was only 12* outside and I actually got it to launch at 12psi. Boost DOES indeed go higher than the 8psi under acceleration conditions. For what ever reason, 17psi is the best I can seem to do. I unplugged the line on the compressor housing to the controller and capped off the compressor housing end. 19psi was all I could get. Unfortunately I did not log that run. If I am out of turbo I am going to be pissed. That make this whole adventure not worth it. On the other hand, I am taking the Ty down to a dyno tomorrow for a baseline and see if I can get it higher than what it is. At this point, I'd be happy with 450 but something tells I'll be leaving there with my tail between my legs.

Re: 2 step time?

Hmmm, have you checked that the controller is closing the WG completely. Might require turbo removal to be 100% positive. Also that the WG is adjusted correctly? Wire it shut and CAREFULLY run up some boost and see what happens.

Re: 2 step time?

With the altitude you are @ more compression sure would have helped.
If you have room (piston to valve clearance) you could advance your camshaft a few degrees, that will help give you more bottom end,, = more brake boost, but less top end power.

It's not going to kill top end power, just a bit less, Your RPM limit will be lower.

What RPM does it make power to now?

Not sure if you would want to do that, just a suggestion.

Re: 2 step time?

so you are making more than 8# of total boost. Your initial concern was not being able to build over 8# at the line. Lets start there. What AFR and timing is around that area? Have you tried disabling briefly the meth kit to see if it goes up/down? Did this just start happening or has it been this way since the new build? Does the RPM climb rapidly or does it look like it get to a point and stays there. A DM / TP replay will show much more. It could still be tune-related, but more question still to answer.

I'm not sure how to check that with the controller I have. I have an ISAC. Also I do run an external wastegate. I believe it is an ITS minigate that came with the RPM set up.

I don't know, other guys have made 24psi up here with very similar combos.

When I first smash the throttle,
RPM - 3370
Timing - 21*
AFR - 11.8
Boost - 8psi

Meth is spraying at this point

At launch, just before leaving the line
RPM - 3750
Boost - 12.8
AFR - 11.9
Timing - 15*

Meth is spraying. I have not deleted the meth to see what happens. I am going to the dyno this afternoons to find out where my power is as far as RPM goes. I will try turning the meth off before I go there.

Keep in mind, it was only 12* here last night so that resulted in more boost. Any normal day and it is about 8psi.

Re: 2 step time?

OK, BAD news. Took the truck to the dyno shop today. They had a hard time keeping the truck from shifting for some reason and also had a hard time with a tach signal. Once they got it all going they did 3 pulls. Truck made 300whp at 5100RPM. When they explained the chart to me they said it dropped off significantly after 5200RPM. We looked the set up over and they were not impressed with the RPM down pipe/wastegate set up at all. I told them were plenty ofpeople running it with success. They went on to say that they think the wastegate is not working right. We tried to turn the boost up and could not make any more than 16psi. Here is where it gets interesting. After we left there, I turned the controller off and guess what, 16psi.

So either something is wrong with the exhaust housing, the wastegate or the boost controller doesn't work. Reason I want to say its not the controller is because even with the compressor line disconnected and the housing capped, 16psi is all we could get. I am terrified here that the engine internal combo is wrong. I sure hope that's not the case.

I am really getting to my wits end with this thing. If I can't get this figured out I have been giving a ton of thought to trying to trade someone for a stockish truck and leave the thing alone. This is rapidly becoming not worth it. On the flip side, we went and weighed the Ty after the dyno runs, 3800lbs. I did the 1/4 mile calculator and at 300hp/4000lb race weight, it gave me a 13.4. Funny thing is, I have gone 13.4 on the track and this thing feels WAY faster than that. The run I did last night was 12.6@106. Something is off here. I know bench racing is not a great thing but something here just doesn't add up.

Another thing I find interesting, I was comparing a log from a few years ago before I wrecked the truck. One thing I found, I had to launch the truck at about 60-70% throttle to keep from spinning and that was at about 10psi. Now, I have to floor it for about 5 seconds to hit 8psi. I am going to pull the wastegate tonight and see if I see anything wrong with it.

Re: 2 step time?

Stock block .040
Forged Crower crank with 2.1 rods
6" Eagle rods
JE Extreme Duty pistons (8.3:1)
Cam from John Gerber(specs posted earlier)
Copper head gaskets
Vortec heads with 2.02's comp 987 springs?
Stock lower intake manifold
Stock upper plenum
52mm Throttle body
A2A

I found the in the wastegate last night that the nut that holds the valve to the diaphragm fell off. Put it back on, doesn't seem to be a difference. FWIW, the spring in there was VERY easy to compress. Maybe a bigger spring? New wastegate?

Can you post the dyno sheets? Also, do you have logs from the hits on the dyno?

I tried to scan the sheets with no luck. I have never scanned anything with this printer and the last time I scanned anything otherwise was well over 6 years ago. I can see if my mom can scan them and email them to me. I did also do a DM log.

Re: 2 step time?

So I have some pretty good news. This morning I decided to take the Ty up to Denver for a nice day of hanging out with friends. Well, while I was getting gas, I re-routed the wastegate lines. I just put one of the lines from the compressor housing straight to the top of the wastegate (this was actually recommended by the dyno shop) and wouldn't you know, 20+psi and FAST!! I almost shit myself.

Only bad thing now is I really have no boost control. I am running the ISAC controller for boost with the Greddy solenoid. I am thinking about using the ECM for control instead and seeing if I have any better luck. I also believe that the spring in the wastegate is too light. I could compress it all the way with two fingers rather easily so I also plan to get a new wastegate. Now what sucks about that is the ITS minigate is no longer made so I am not sure what to do there. This will likely require the flange/tube to be cut from the downpipe set up and sleeved and re-welded.

I guess its a start, the turbo and engine can definitely do what its supposed to do, now just need to get the boost control figured out. It was amazing what 20psi (at half throttle even) felt like. I was amazed at the difference.
