2 step time?

Looks like I am having some trouble building more boost at the line. I am currently stuck at about 8psi on the launch. My truck feels like it wants a lot more. Questions is, is it maybe time for a 2 step or some kind of timing retard for launching or should I be able to build as much boost as I want to with my set up? FWIW, I have should have PLENTY of converter. I am leaving the line between 3700-4000 RPM.

If I were to be in a situation where I needed it, what would be the smartest most effective way to do this? Would I want just the 2 step or would I want to replace my 6al box with another type of unit?

Re: 2 step time?

You can add a 2 step to your 6AL or you could get a digital 6 box which has a timing retard and 2 step built into the same box.

Why can't it build boost at the line? I can get 10-12psi before my brakes start pushing. Sounds like a converter or turbo lag issue. I'm betting turbo lag, 2 step with a spark retard will probably be the direction you need to go.

A/R is .85. It is a PTE67gtq turbo. I am building boost at the line but only about 8psi. 60' seems to be getting a best of 1.8. Absolutely no wheel spin.

it worked great on my truck, L35s with a 72gtq, nocked 400-500rpm off my spoolup. I have a 2step with pills for sale, if your interested, PM me.

Not sure a 2 step will help you build boost. It really just adds the ability to leave at the same rpm everytime. Tune and parts of engine will control spool.

if you can't build boost past 8#m I would look at a few things first. what are the afr's/timing in that area? are you spraying meth? once you leave the line does it make boost? sounds more tune-related, but more facts are needed.

Re: 2 step time?

Im going to run one. You can build boost faster on the line because you are actually loading the engine retarding timing that much. Also less power there when you are holding the brake. I hear trans brakes work really well also. No experience with them yet.

Re: 2 step time?

I can see a 2 step helping spool only due to the unburnt raw fuel being thrown into the exhaust and being ignited causing the turbo to spin faster.

I would still do what I could prior to adding 2 step though.

There is a dusting of snow on the ground today. If it melts off I plan to take the Ty to the exhaust shop to have a the hangers installed (fell off somehow) . If I get it out toay I will log to answer the tune questions.

I am spraying meth, the converter is a 9/11 for the 80e from TCS

Re: 2 step time?

Hi Mike, I run a 2 step for consistency at the line. Launch RPM is around 2250 and only a few #s of boost. Truck runs 12.6s at 105 +/-. No way could my brakes hold 3-4000 and 8#. Like others have said I think something else is going on. Altitude may be it but I don't think so. All a 2 step does in randomly cut cylinders to hold the motor at a set RPM allowing you to mash the throttle. Since you're now at full throttle but with the motor missing terribly there may be -some- more boost because of the additional air flow but because of the engine only firing randomly full exhaust heat is not there so don't know what the actual gain might be.

Can you post a DM? Might be something there we could look at.

Anyway that's my :2cents: rant. Good luck with this.

Re: 2 step time?

8 psi is right about where most of the alky systems default 'begin spray' psi is. What are your afr's at the line? I know that I had an issue where it would be running too rich on the line and it would kinda bogg out. I don't know what your running for a build but I thought it was simular to mine. I ususally leave around 8psi and it spins all 4 wheels (bfg g-force 245's) and thats if I can leave before the truck goes crazy. I would take a look at your leaving afr's, and perhaps your timing. I know you know alot more about tuning than I do, but I thought I would throw it out there. Your other issues could be as simple as issues with your gate or your vacuum lines.

Re: 2 step time?

if you are spraying meth ( or water AND meth specifically), you may be injecting too much - that would cause the bog. As a test, disable the meth, tune it for that, and see if the boost comes up. you didn't answer if the boost ever goes higher than 8# after you leave.
