Where to start with Code $59?

Re: Where to start with Code $59?

Alright, so I've been driving around for a while with the turbo hose disconnected so I don't run into boost at all and I just keep having bad luck. In park or neutral the car will idle ~14.7-15.2 AFR but once I put it into any other gear (R-D) then the AFR rises up to around 16.0-16.4

I put the turbo hose back on to see how she ran under boost and it started detonating early and no sign of the AFR going below 15.0. Help!

the autometer wideband has a 0-4volt output, do you have that programmed/selected correctly into the bin

EDIT: sorry i saw your posts on code59, carry on!

Have you done any tuning or even studied how to adjust the tables or were you expecting to load up code59 and all the planets would align?

Your lean, lean will knock, lean will blow up motors. Need to add more fuel.

Yes I have and I've tuned turbo vehicles before, I know how it's supposed to work but for some reason it isn't.

Kinda along the lines of getting back to basics...

You're running a stock configuration bin. On a truck with stock parts, stock turbo, and stock injectors, this should be somewhat close. I can see it being .5 to 1.0 AFR off, but the numbers you're talking make me think something is wrong. It's simple enough to add 20 to all the VE #s above 100kpa, but if something is broken, it won't do much good.

One of the following is true:

1) Fuel system isn't up to the task. Fuel pump, voltage to the pump, filter, regulator, kinked hose, injectors.
2) You're flowing *waaay* more air than stock. This would imply a non-stock turbo or heads/cam.
3) What you think you have, isn't what you have (if you're the only one that's had the truck, this generally isn't the case) .

The place to go from here is to find out which one is true.

90% + of all "tuning problems" are due to an underlying mechanical issue.

Have you tried using AutoTune? Would probably help in getting your initial AFR's dialed in.

I assume you've done the basics of: adjusting fuel pressure, tuneup, checked for vacuum leaks, set base timing, etc.

Sure have, even with my AFR being ~14.7-15.0 at idle autotune keeps trying to change my tune around.

I took all of the tables from 101 up and cranked it up a little bit to see what she did and bam, 10.1 on the wideband. So I think it was just something weird. How do I load up a .bin file so you guys can see what I'm starting out with?

One thing to note with autotune, in particular, is that changes in IAT and coolant temp will make things shift a lot... a warm intake one time will lean things out, cold will richen it up.

I've even seen the cycling of a fan on/off do this. Before you start doing any tuning, validate that the water temp is up to your themostat temp, and verify that your IATs are stable.

Overall weather conditions can swing AFRs a fair amount as well.

I just logged at least a half hour of driving . stop and go , boost , no boost , and i even blew off my i/c pipe twice .

i really want to work some auto tune magic but alas , no excell program to copy paste my bin file .

anyone like to help a brotha out . I can email my bin and log data or you can send me some excell . whatevers easiest for you .
