Hi guys,well just put a fresh engine in my syclone started it, started fine idles good and then the famous water in the oil curse,first set of of intake gaskets were the edlebrocks,second set were felpros 1203, just orderd,felpros 1268, I used the red rtv the first time and the right stuff the second, My question,is there a way to know if its coming from the intake or the head gaskets the truck has 94 heads, the truck starts up fine has good idle, I bring it up to temp, If it wasn't for the water issue you could swear there wasn't anything wrong.

When you pulled it apart was there any signs of anything weird going on with the intake gaskets?

The water will come from the heads in only 4 places. Front and rear water passage. The head bolt question by ItsMyTy is a good one. If you didn't seal them, IMHO, you can remove them ONE AT A TIME and seal them without removing the heads. I'll probable get slammed with that opinion but oh well. :lol:

You should be able to fill the rad and pressurize the system and maybe, just maybe, find the leak that way. Look at your intake at each corner. Does it look like it sealed properly? When you pulled the manifold was it wet below either corner?

And from left field; check to see if when the manifold is sitting on the heads, with gaskets, there is space between the block and the manifold. Don't know the spec but at least 1/16 or you're risking the manifold not sealing on the heads. (In effect the manifold hits the block before it tightens against the heads.)

I had this same oil in water issue with my ARP
studs but after a good cleaning and RTV sealant
on the studs it solve my problem !!! :tup:

So your problem was the studs? I'm not looking forward to pulling the heads if that's what it is!:(

Ok,pulled of the heads,The f%#ken studs leaked,I don"t know why, I used the permatex sealer with teflon liberally on them, I did a search on what was the best sealer but everyone uses different stuff,looks like arp uses the same stuff with ptfc,same sh%t that's in the permatex. Any solid recommendations,besides what i used. Thanks in advance guys.

I've used red RTV every time with NO problems.

Edit: Doesn't take much. Use just enough to fill the first few threads (1/2" or so).

Same thing happened to me and many more people with other SBC. I ran the GM cooling tabs until it sealed then flushed the system. Many people online say this is a good solution and many claim they ran it in their cooling system many of years ago and the threads are still sealed.

We used Permatex sealer also and did it pretty perfectly IMO

But they still leaked!! If I were where you are at right now with the heads off and everything I would just put head bolts back in. I don't think its worth having it possibly leak again.

You need to flush and clean all coolant from the block
treads so the RTV sealer will seal on better when i just
put sealer on the ARP studs it was still leaking just use
tap water to flush out coolant first and then blowdry with air
and leave overnight so all water is dryed out !!! :tup:

you may be right on this, i'm thinking of doing just that the thought of it not sealing again just turns my stomach.

Looks like rtv is the way to go,i'll think about that or head bolts while i clean everything up,what a mess,Thanks guys.:tup:

If using ARP bolts and lube (under the head & washer) then they have a different torque spec. I just don't know what it is. :roll:

when sealing threads on studs for heads with rtv, do you have to let it dry or can you torque nuts immediately? Thanks in advance.

:2cents:My thought would be immediate. Sounds weird but I wouldn't want the RTV to dry without some load against the studs. To say another way you don't want to disturb the RTV after it has setup.:2cents:

Youre suppose to torque bolts/studs immediately when using RTV, I thought. You don't want it to dry before it gets "smooshed" into position, or it wont fill the cracks/gaps/whatever.
