I just spoke to Sam at comp cams he's recomending A 218/218@.050 570lift intake
540 lift exhaust Thats on 8.5to1 compression ported vortec heads gt72 turbo!!

What you guys thing about that?

Depends on the lobe events. See if he'll send you the full cam specs, and post 'em.

Check your intake to piston clearance, also. It should be ok, but above .500 I'd always check it.

lobe sep. was 114
218/218 @.050 with 1.6 rocker 570 lift intake 555 exhaust
He said this cam was more radical than the 422 cam .070 more lift
better for big turbo and ported heads with higher redlines
Power curve in the 5000 rpm and up

as long as you have the rest of the motor built to take the RPM's....from the sounds of what Scott is asking for, I think it's a bit much.

Yea... This will be her daily driver still. From all the engines I've built.. boosted or on the bottle I've found that the mild grinds tend to make more overall power and driveability than one that makes another 20hp peak.

Thanks for your input...

sounds like a good grind for a .70 series turbo with good heads!

We put the 218 cams in the buicks and have good luck with overall driveabilty/power but i've seen the 208 cams make good power too... all depends on the rest of the combo.

Alex and I talked yesterday and he had some good suggestions! Thanks!!!!

The only thing I can offer is to be sure and heed the recent warning from Melling about solid motor mounts and their oil pumps. They changed the design of their perfectly reliable pump to a thinner casting  and its prone to crack when used with solid mounts. One sytyer with solid mounts that I know of came REALLY close to scrapping a motor when his pump cracked during a run. He was watching the pressure gauge and noticed the oil pressure dropping off so he shut the motor down which saved it. On tear down inspection the oil pump was cracked/broken in half  .

do you know when melling changed the design? I got one in my engine and want to use solids.engine was built in mid 2005.

instead of using the standard Melling pump everyone has used for years, I went withthe 10500 pump...it is specifically designed and blueprinted for racing applications. I dont remember the part number of the old one. If you get a chance to pick one up and look it over, it is quite impressive.

Big difference in profile on a roller cam vs. the Buick's flat tappet... or were you referring to a roller-converted Buick?

A 218 roller cam isn't really terribly heavy. The lift numbers are of less consequence to overall driveability than the duration, and particularly the actual lobe timing. You can have 2 identical lift/duration cams that operate completely different due to lobe timing and shape.

If you have a 60 series turbo, you're out of the realm of a "driver" vehicle, IMO. You need a
big enough converter to get that turbo going so as to be a bit on the loose side for a true driver.

Crap crap and more crap... lol...
I'm trying to save a guy a few buck and it's just not working.
The crank out of our truck would have to be turned .40 No way.. garbage.
The TRW pistons were full floated in the other engine but the rod was not bushed so it beat the pin into the locks and trashed the piston pin groove... Damn.
The one rod in the other engine was bent. thus not able to use the set/or pistons
Damn.. just cant catch a break...
So far we are able to use the other crank.
Rods and cam ect are ordered. Got a set of SRP forged.. W/Eagle rods.
Wanted to go 6" but they didn't make them.
Progress but slower and worse than I thought. :(
Won't be making the 28th deadline.

I am going a bit larger on the turbo than what my current setup is designed for. When I do the 4L80E I'll do the 28-3200 stall and it'll be right where it needs to be. I don't like buying parts twice.
I've also never had a problem spooling big turbos. Some guys have all kinds of headaches but I don't.
???? not sure why? Some guys troubles could be tune and wastegate arrangement or lack there of.

Thanks agin for your input!!!

I first noticed the "warning" paper work in the bottom of the box a melling M55 came in last ~November. Dunno when they implemented the change since its hard to tell how long that type stuff sits on the shelf unless you contact Melling (I havent....yet). I did buy a couple pumps early in 05 or late 04 best I recall that didnt have any warning paperwork in the box if that helps any.

A guess would be that if the paperwork that came in the box your pump came out of doesnt have the warning its the older/heavier style pump. Just a guess though.

Hint to you wide lobe sep liking guys on what cam to buy: Take a REALLY close look at the cams comp offers for the LS1. Some nice numbers there and all ya gotta do is call em up and tell em you want grind #XXXX put on a 4.3 roller blank ;) ;) . I didnt come up with the idea but someone else running one did and they swore me to secrecy on specifics for now...none the less anyone can look at comps site or their catalog for themselves...hint hint ;) .

Dowl pins are different....

These are a hollow pin that slide over the main cap bolt and down into the block and up into the cap.

the dowl pins are very small like what would locate the head on the block.. .that's not what i'm having done...

If you've ever seen a good quality rod it has a locating sleeve that go's between the rod and the cap.. that's exactly what I'm doing to the block..

Thanks for the input... Scott~

Just a reminder, I'd like to get pics of this like you said. I really wanna know about this idea.

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

I'm heading up to the machene shop right now with a GN engine.

I'll take pic's of the pin setup on the splayed 4 bolt center mains. They were finishing that when I was up there.
Got my rods and rings... waiting on pistons.. :(
I'll post a link to the pic when I get back...

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

This is the engine block I got from Rich in Chicago... I just brought it back from the machiene shop a few min. ago.
It does not have 4 bolt mains... Just a macheined cap with 1/2 steel on top. It's a help but does not solve cap walk.
The pictures are of how the pins are recessed in the block and the main cap.
I'll also put picutres of the 4bolt block too... :)

mainpins(1).JPG

Picture of the pins fit down into the block and the studs going through it.

maincaps.JPG

Main caps with 1/2 steel on top. You can see in the lower right corner how the main caps are recessed for the pin to fit up into.

Can't walk if they can't move!!!!

Hope this helps someone with their build.
