Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

Putting back together my wife's Typhoon engine and here's what I've been doing in the last week:

The build:

Stock block Splayed 4bolt centers with pins/studs
.30 with TRW forged/L35 rods
Nitrated crank
Comp 270 .500lift @112lca
Harland sharp roller rockers/studs guideplates
L35 heads port matched
Melling oil pump
ARP bolts on all
50lb/hr injectors
PTE.61bb turbo

Any other suggestions that I missed? Thoughts? critics?

Thanks.. Scott

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

I would go 60/65 injectors unless the 50's are just laying around.

Not sure I would pick that cam. IMO has too close of a LSA for a turbo motor. I like to see 114/115

L35 rods will be ok, but if the extra $300 won't pull food off the table it is nice insurance and will make the bottom end about as solid as you can. Otherwise they will be your weak link.

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

What will I have to do with the ECM to handle the 65's?

I don't mind going witht the larger injector... just need to know what to do to support them.

I can get it fired up and broke in with low boost till I can come down to you and toss in the 65's and

program it.

I think the drivers need to be changed in the ECM if I remember right...

Thanks for your Input Jeff...

I picked this cam 270AHR which has .500I 510ex 270/276 on a 114lca but the guy at Comp said this other one with the 112 would be better? humm... What are your thoughts on the above cam?

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

I agree with Jeff that 112 is a little tight (high lift+tight LSA=more over lap). . You dont have a ton of lift with a spec of .500" so it may be just fine and if youve already spent the money on a cam then Id run it to see how it worked out if it were me.

The only thing I can offer is to be sure and heed the recent warning from Melling about solid motor mounts and their oil pumps. They changed the design of their perfectly reliable pump to a thinner casting  and its prone to crack when used with solid mounts. One sytyer with solid mounts that I know of came REALLY close to scrapping a motor when his pump cracked during a run. He was watching the pressure gauge and noticed the oil pressure dropping off so he shut the motor down which saved it. On tear down inspection the oil pump was cracked/broken in half  .

BTW, what are "pinned" main caps? Not being an ass here Ive just never heard the term and Im curious what it refers to.

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

My list is here on the desk and am going to order the cam/parts today from my vendor.

I can change the cam number right now or the oil pump... thanks for the tip!!!!

When you "pin" a main cap either steel or stock it refers to putting a sleeve between the block and the main cap. A hollow pin is recessed down into the block and fits into a recessed area in the main cap and does not allow the main cap to flex or "walk"

On tear down of any block when you pull the main caps and see what looks like etching or scratches under them your caps have been walking back and forth due to detonation or high load. The pins don't allow that to happen unless you shear the sleeves and bolts.. which would take alot to do...
I'll take pictures of the pin setup when I get the block back this week so it'll explain alot.

Thanks, Scott!

Oh, I know what youre talking about now. I never heard it refered to as "pinned" that I can recall is why it threw me for a minute. Ive always heard the term "dowled" as in dowl/roll pins over the studs to positively locate the caps.

If its something you have the extra cash to do its deffinately a little extra insurance against the caps walking/fretting on the block.

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

Dowl pins are different....

These are a hollow pin that slide over the main cap bolt and down into the block and up into the cap.

the dowl pins are very small like what would locate the head on the block.. .that's not what i'm having done...

If you've ever seen a good quality rod it has a locating sleeve that go's between the rod and the cap.. that's exactly what I'm doing to the block..

Thanks for the input... Scott~

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

the 60/65 (called different) are high impedence and biggest you can run without any ecm mods. Hence why I suggest them over 50's now. My tuner god Dig also told me they are a lot easier to tune.

I'd ask the comp guy what he knows about turbo motors, and fuel injection myself. Maybe he knows more than I do (heck most of the world does), but I have not seen one with that tight of a LSA run fast either.

I know Robert told me a cam change made a BIG difference in his truck, and although I don't know the exact specs I have a good idea what they are. Not that his truck is the ultimate go to guide, but it isn't 112 LSA either. The cam for my ty is 114LSA.

As myclone stated with the low lift it may be ok, key is on a boosted app you don't want much if any overlap. Engine isn't sucking air in like a NA motor.

Too much duration, not enough LCA.

If you had killer heads, and were running bigger RPM, it would be different.

You can get a bit more LCA by retarding the intake lobe (ie have them grind it that way),
and shorten the overall intake duration.

The custom cam in mine has upwards of 116 LCA. (and a late intake lobe)

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

270/276 has to be 0.002 lift (atleast I would guess) what is the duration at .050 lift?

Dig.....

Who made your camshaft? Not looking to steal anybody's build... just want a cam that's going to work in my wife's truck... and a company that knows about these trucks...

Thanks dig...

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

It's a comp cam that I was looking at..

215 220 @.050 on the duration .500I .510E with a 114 LCA 2000rpm-5500rpm range PN:18-422-8

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

Comp Cams does custom grinds in about 3-4 days. You should talk to your machinist about the entire project and your goals, and then you guys should be able to come up with a suitable cam choice. If you have any questions, the engine builder can call Comp Cams up and talk it over a bit there too.

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

Ok so its a 422, I would probably use a 415, especially for a driver and a moderate sized turbo, but that is just me...

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

I'd use a 415 but it states that it's on a 112 LCA... the only choice listed with a 114 is the 422!!!!

Humm... I got this list off their website...
www.compcams.com

Thanks again for your input.

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

Just took the pistons/rods up to the machiene shop.. we loooked them over real good and found #6 was bent... must have been put in that way from the looks of it.. (Brian Green's old engine)
So... got to get a set of rods now.
Thanks again for your input guys..

Comp. I told them to grind, and they ground it. Took a while due to a cam blank backorder.

Got it through Hood.

What you have will *work*, just a question of how well.

Ha!

Took 'em lots longer than that to do mine. (Read: Months)

Fortunately, I wasn't in a hurry.

Re: Thoughts on current build:? Engine.

yeah...I think from the time I had Motorstate order the cam to the time it came in was about 1-1.5 weeks...more or less. It wasn't that horribly bad. I had time to wait for it anyways.

I think he would do good with a 214/212 @ 0.50 with a 114LSA. Mild, but still making power up to 4800-5KRPM.
