Syclone Stock Horsepower to the wheels?? 1/4 mile times? STi dispute

I know officialy stock horsepower is 280 (disputed to 330hp) and torque is 360ftlb for the SY. Everyone knows about the 0 to 60 in 4.6 seconds.... in the rain. I did a search, but had trouble finding any numbes on horsepower of a stock syclone to the wheels.

My friend just got an 05 STi and it is mint. (sparked my reading and research, plus the fact that I'm bored at work)

I was reading a cool article about the EVO MR and the STi in Motortrend and they are basically identical in the numbers. The EVO is a little more $ but you get a 5 yr warranty. The 0-60 times are 4.7 for both which doesn't beat the Syclone 4.6  The 1/4 mile times are both 13.3! It's crazy how they are so even.

So what is the official 1/4 mile time for a stock SY? I've seen anything from 13 to 14 seconds. Does anyone know the wheel horsepower for a stock SY?

Here is the article I read about STi and EVO

http://motortrend.com/roadtests/sedan/112_0410_evowrx/

Numbers (Are these correct?):
2005 EVO 276hp (340hp outside US, sweet!) 289ftlb
2005 STi 300hp 330ftlb
1991 Syclone 280HP (disputed to be 330+hp) 360ftlb

Here is the dyno specs from the article. I suggest you read it if you have time, it's cool stuff.

STi is 300hp/300ft lbs. Every article I remember said the syty's were 285/350.

I completely stock STi will walk a completely stock Syclone. I ran 13.2@102.86 with about 110degree track temp in my completely stock STi. There were not completely stock syty's running the same day not doing better than 14.0.

is your ty modded? My STi walked away from a ~12.6 second syclone on the highway from about a 45mph roll :2cents:

and 12 years newer. What was faster than the norm back doesn't quite hold true now.

I think it would safe to say that Sy can do 1/4 in 13.3-4 stock when driven properly and in tune. I have seen so many SyTy that aren't in tune even by enthusiasts, mine is a good example this despite my best efforts. I don't trust magazine tests as sometimes I have found them way off +/-

Dynojets and Mustang Dyno often are 20hp and sometime the numbers vary by dyno, so I don't really consider them to be a bench marks. Performin Normin's Sy did 292rwhp, over the years I have seen few SyTy in the 245-255awhp range.

The factory Hp rating was 280hp (91/92) 285hp (93) Torque 350 (91) 360 (92/93) Adam (SYO237) wrote in an interview with Kim Neilsen (Program Maganger) the actual production was around 300hp. Dyno have show the torque is underrated and is around 420-440rwhp.

In comparison to Evo's and STi our trucks are heavier and less aerodynamic to take full advantage of the additional torque. I would say a well driven newer 05 VIII and 06 IX Evo probably has a slight advantage. STi's are suposedly slightly quicker than VIII Evo's (not sure about the IX). Both of the STi and EVO do require high RPM launch 5000-6000rpm to achieve the best times, so you have a chance if the owner isn't willing to drive it hard.

i was more referring to right off the showroom floor style "stock".

What about Junior's Ty though...he ran 13.4 at the gmhtp magazine day?? Was that completely stock?

Doesn't someone have a sig around here that says racing from a roll is like masturbation...... not as good as the real thing. :rotf:
Can you do a 12.6 sec quarter mile??

SY/TY aka "box" "brick" have aerodynamic issues to consider at higher speeds.

That retarded ass (IMO) fin on the STi provides 50lbs of downforce at 100mph! That is pretty sick. Too bad it's fugly as hell. :(

So we can conclude that:

STi vs. EVO MR vs. Syclone (ALL STOCK and in tune)
would be about dead even through the quarter mile (with some winning and losing each time depending on weather and driver abilities)

I think I'll stick with my limited production one year truck that costs about 1/3 the price of an STi or EVO MR.

I was talking about 100% stock Syclone's, it just not many are running 100%. Dig made apost a couple of days ago saying only about 10-20% of SyTy that he starts to tune are running 100% right.

As for Junior1's Ty you would have to ask him. I know it had a tune up and he was talking baout putting in a fuel pump, I think it would qualify as a Nats stock class truck. He didn't even have a TC lockup switch. His truck is abnormal for a stock Ty, so I wouldn't say every Ty would run 13.4's. With good weather high 13's would be a good goal for most stock Ty's

What about an article I read about a 13.06 second 1/4 mile? I also read one that was 13.16sec. These were all reviews of stock vehicles back in the early days. Do you think weather conditions and driver abilities have that big of a +/- effect on 1/4 mile times?

I think he is talking about Sy2932 Sy. Correct me Mike (either one) if I am wrong, he was running lower boost.

Also 45 mph isn't exactly a great spot for SyTy 3rd gear as it won't downshift to 2nd gear.

On the flip side STi have 102-103 trap speed which is noticable higher than most Sy who usually don't break 100mph, usually trap speed is a good indication of how a car will do from a roll on. I wouldn't race a STi from a roll on with a stock Sy if you don't want to embarass yourself.

I agree. I think we all know what the SYTY is best at.....

I think some Syclone could do it, but I was being conservative. Some Sti and Evo's have claim to run 13.0 and even a few claim 12.9's. The dirty secret about the first Syclone that were delivered to the press, they had a 20g turbo. I would the magazines didn't do the proper launch.

Weather and launch can definately play a big role. A proper boosted launch can deduct 1/2 second. 30-40 degree change of weather probably does a .2-.3 difference maybe even more.

So would it be accurate to say that an STi or EVO MR can run faster times (than an older SY or TY) in higher weather temps because they are 14 year newer vehicles and more technologically advanced?

completely stock, no. But neither can a completely stock truck. I was simply adding that tidbit of info in as a side note. I know we aren't talking about rolling starts. At the same time....i had no problem banging off 1.7-1.8 60ft's all day either. A stock truck really has NO advantage over a stock STi. The only thing you could hope for is someone who doesn't know how to drive (which still might not help - my first run in my STi i ran a 13.8, with missing 3rd gear), or someone who either doesn't know the best shift points or doesn't like to wind the car out at all.

Yea, it was Mike Campbell, on the way back from the drive through strip club. We were both surprised that i pulled away from him. I don't know if he was running lower boost than he did for his best 12 sec. time....but i was still shocked.

umm...check the sticker price of your truck. They were $28k+ new. Sticker on my STi was like $32, but i got it for $28k. Thats not quite 1/3 the price.

Yeah I know. :) I'm just talking what I paid used compared to what it would cost to own a new STi. Since it would be hard to find an 05 STi used. Believe me, if I could find a used STi in about 10 years for a good price I'd most likely be buying it.

BTW I guess they changed it from STi to STI (note the capital i, ooooooh)

I don't know if I would exactly say that, but it may be true since the stock heads are so proned to detonation and I would guess they have more efficent IC's.

Totally agreed, but don't you think it's pretty cool that a 1991 limited production pick 'em up truck is about on par with a 2005 rally inspired sports sedan. You win some you lose some vs. an STI I guess.

It's cool to me.....
