I finally got some color on the new bed. It was built from my stock bed, with the goal of retaining the exact look, but eliminating a few hundred pounds. I was aiming for inexpensive and that's why we didn't use carbon fiber and aluminum. I figured the extra pounds saved wouldn't be worth the extra cost. I will likely add a package tray with tie straps under the tonneau in the near future to retain some cargo usage. It's shot in flat black for now, once rest of truck is rebuilt in fiberglass, we will go with the gloss.

Very well done.

I am forecasting IF you market these, you will be quite pleased with the sales....but I don't know your plans in that regard.

I'm curious about shipping something like this. Will they be molded as four separate panels, with the buyer responsible for assembly? I like it, even though I don't have a Sy to put it on.

What I like (and I hope is the case) is that the cladding is a part of the bed, which eliminates gaps and potential broken tabs

Judging from this picture I say that is correct

If you end up building front fenders this way and offer them for sale I am going to have to buy a new keyboard.

Glad to see a fiberglass project actually get done, 99% of the time they never do.

Re: Syclone Fiberglass Bed

Thanks All, glad you like. My buddy built the fiberglass bed for me, I built the steel frame and we "glued" them together with overlapping glass. It is all one piece, cladding and all 4 sides.

Jose (fiberglass fabricator) built it in 4 pieces from the molds he made. The then bolted the molds together and glassed them together. He said he could build the 4 seperate pieces and ship them if someone wanted them. He could also build the whole thing and see about shipping that way, not sure that would be worth it. I can easily supply a step by step on the steel frame build. It was pretty easy and cheap, only a few hours of work and less than $50 in metal.

I will be building front fenders with the cladding integrated the same way, might be some time away though, will have to see. I already have the stock hood done, and next will be a front bumper to eliminate the steel/plastic cladding combination, should save some weight hanging off the front of the truck, the stock parts are really heavy.

:woot::headbange Can't wait to see more pics of your projects, and REALLY hope the front fenders/cladding can reach a group purchase some day.

Wow...nicely done man. I have always wondered if anyone would make a glass bed for the Sy, but never figured I would see it done. Thats a pretty major weight savings for sure.

Re: Syclone Fiberglass Bed

I would definately be interested in eliminating the front bumper steel pan. That thing is heavy.
There are already fiberglass hoods available for this model truck.
Also, I cant see front fenders being much lighter than stock once all the bondo and primer is applied. However, it would eliminate cladding fitment and gap issues!.....

Youd be surprised just how heavy stock fenders are. Make them correctly with fiberglass and you can guarantee cutting the weight in half.

Re: Syclone Fiberglass Bed

I don't know the weight difference from the stock bed to this version, but it's a lot. The stock bed with cladding and steel bumper reinforcment is in the hundreds of pounds. I think the fiberglass version with steel is in the 50 pound range give or take? I probably should have weighed it, sorry.

I don't know what it takes for a group purchase, but if there is interest, I can see if we can speed up doing the front fenders in the next month or so. Those would be worth building and shipping I think and the fit/finish and ability to fine tune is really nice. We were able to sand down the cladding mismatches that showed up in the bed piece and really clean it up.

Re: Syclone Fiberglass Bed

If you are going to seriously get fenders done, I would offer them in 2 versions:

- With the cladding molded in
- Without the cladding, just the stock fender

If it drivable, take to your local garbage dump or DOT weigh station and put it on the scales.

Re: Syclone Fiberglass Bed

Fenders work on both a sy and ty so your market opens up a lot.

Fiberglass s10 fenders already exist, lot of extra work to build a mold for something your not even going to use yourself, and already exist on market.
