stock rods how many hp?

I bought my longblock used and it has speedpro forged pistons, stock rods were shotpeened and magnafluxed. How much hp usually breaks a rod? Whats there safety level. I assumed 450+hp would let them go long enough. Motor made 404whp at 13lbs.

Have the motor apart and its going to the builder but i'm sure he is gonna try to sell me on forged rods.

Whats your opinion. Most i ever wanna make is 450whp on this setup. I just didn't think much would take 500whp abuse.

I thought the stock rods are forged?

Were the rods side grinded/polished & then shot peened?. That's the norm.

Need to worry more about a 700 holding up first before the rods let go. IMO.

I would replace the rods. With 400-450whp, one mistake of engine detonation and their is a good chance the rods will be sticking through the side of the block.

Re: stock rods how many hp?

I think its hard to say. The rods will handle tons of power but the question is for how long. I thought Ed Hes ran 9's on a stock bottom end once. The only thing you will have to do it clearance the block for the larger rods. In my opinion I think stock replacement blocks are a waste of time. With the right shop you can build a motor stronger for the same price. Heck why not cryo the new rods along with it. After you total that all up the stock replacement motor costs the same. I had a stock replacement motor in mine and it made knocking noises. The GM replacement pistons were not the best as far as being in tolerance.

350 rods aren't the same size on the big end. You're better off buying the correct rods to start with.

You can install 350 rods for not a huge amount of money. They have a lot more material on them. The only thing you will have to do it clearance the block for the larger rods. In my opinion I think stock replacement blocks are a waste of time. With the right shop you can build a motor stronger for the same price. Pistons are cheap. 350 rods are a run of the mill and cryo your crank for like $200. Heck why not cryo the new rods along with it. After you total that all up the stock replacement motor costs the same. I had a stock replacement motor in mine and it made knocking noises. I thought most all GM rods are forged? No?

Ony stock rods I've seen that are cast from GM are the old Pontiac 350,400,some 455 etc. 455 SD had forged though. & I think the 428's.

Pick up a set of late (96&up) 4.3 rods and have them cyro treated along with the crank. There's more meat in the right places on the newer rods. With cyro'd crank and rods with 4 bolt mains you should be good to 600hp.While you're getting the rods and crank cyro'd,you might as well get the rear main cap done also.Check e-bay for the rods.

Re: stock rods how many hp?

I have a 1997 s10, the block is a 2000 4.3 block with STD bore Speedpro pistons, stock rods, and stock crank. Balanced rotating assembly.

I spoke with RPM today and they said 600hp mark needs nitrided crank, forged rods/pistons, and 4 bolt conversion.

For cost standpoint, the long block looks to be in awesome shape with the hatches still on the cylinder wall and no ridge. I'm probably gonna put it all back together and leave it at 400whp. I have 10,000 into and i'm kinda done with spending money on it, i wanna drive it more than i work on it.
