Is this the "ulgy duckling" project truck that you had a few years back Morgan?

Re: Truck won't move, TC or Tranny?

Trannies that sit outside will be FILLED with rust. Big thing, valvebody. Sit the valvebody in a clean trans pan and sprag a whole bottle of liquid wrench or pb blast. Let it sit for a while. After that take several cans of carbureter cleaner and spray it, spray it, hit it with compressed air, spray it again. Take the pressure regulator valve lineup out of the pump and spray it down. Look for the TV boost valve to be rusted to the sleeve.
While your dong all of this the trans should be lifted with an engine hoist by the bellhousing and just let it hang. All the fluid, water and everything will run out. Let it hange for a couple days.
The big problem is gonna be clutches. They are made of paper. Water contamination is bad when it gets to the clutches.
I've gone through this building "supposedly good" cores. I know what I'm talking about. It may have been good when it came out but after it sits outside, it may has well been a burnup. Best cores are ones just taken out of a wrecked vehicle. The body protects the trans from the elements.
When I say "take it easy on it" I'm saying if you put a non syty setup in it, just drive it easy and it'll do fine.

Well - if that one winds up being no good I have another spare one that wasn't sitting outside that he can try. The one I gave him is worth a try to get him up and running again. Thanx for the recommendations now how to clean that one out before using it. One of the two should do the trick for him hopefully.

Re: Truck won't move, TC or Tranny?

:/ I'm not really looking to do this more than once... I'm now torn about what I should do... I need this truck out of my life, its doing nothing but ruining it... sigh

Re: Truck won't move, TC or Tranny?

I dont even know if i want to fix this thing anymore, if i have to rip a tranny apart, its not worth it to me to put the time in...

What George mention to do can all be done from just dropping the pan. The hardest part will be getting the pressure regulator line out of the front pump.

Then only thing is tho, I have no confidence in myself to work on a transmission. By just reading what he wrote, I would have no idea what these parts are when i open it up... I know abosultely nothing about transmissions, this makes this 100x's harder

Re: Truck won't move, TC or Tranny?

UPDATE:

Pulled the pan off to find all of this... someone (george) tell me if I'll be okay or should i find another route?

well one things for sure, definately use the pan off your current transmission.

it doesnt really look too bad physically (after cleanup), but george should have a better idea. at least there was some trans fluid in there.

Spray PB blast on the input shaft and stator and clean them up with scotchbrite and then put a new o ring on the end of the input shaft. The pan looks nasty where it rained in it. The valvebody doesn't look bad from the outside but will have rust inside. If you had a choice between that one and one that was inside, I'd go with the one that was covered up or inside.

george it seemed like the water level in the bottom of the pan didn't get higher than the trans filter, would this make any sort of difference? I'm going to have to clean the input shaft, it looks pretty rough. But since the picture, I cleaned up the pan nicely and sprayed the bottom of the tranny with a little more carb cleaner and I didn't find any rust. Would this change any of your opinions?

What will happen is moisture is drawn to the trans fluid. For some reason insects love the stuff also. The moisture will push the fluid away and the cast iron and steel components will get a rust coating. The problem will be wear the valves and everything sit. There is a channel there and all the moisture from inside the trans will run down through the valvebody and drip into the pan. It won't hurt anything to try it. It's just your time. If it doesn't work, pull it out and look for another. I'd go through the valvebody, governor, and the pressure regulator assembly and clean them though. If you take off the valvebody, PB blast it and let it sit, then douse it with carb cleaner and take a small flathead screwdrive and move the valves. Remember, it is a salvaged trans so don't get upset if it doesn't work. And if it does work, be VERY happy. Run the new fluid for about 500 miles and then change it out.

However if you ever ask a tranny guy they will tell you that the tranny needs to be torn apart..

And that right there is why.

Wow!! Wish I could offer more to help, but I have to say that's quite a story of bad SyTy luck! Engine, trans, converter, converter... Sheesh. I don't know if it's any consolation but at this point it's safe to say you have proven you have "what it takes" to own a SyTy... look at how much effort you have put in already. I can't guarantee your solution is around the corner but with your motivation, there's nothing you can't fix with enough time.

he is trying to sell the truck, it is costing way to much to fix for a college student.

He got hit with a bad deal. It seems a lot of bad luck for just daily driving. Sounds like he paid too much for it if it was in that bad of shape mechanically.

To me its worth a try.. It takes less than a day to drop and reinstall a tranny in one of these so its really no big deal..

I think it was really just bad luck, when morgan sold it the truck was running pretty good.. might not have been good enough for it to have been a daily driver though... who knows.. eitherway Eric was just burdened with alot of problems and unfortunately it shyed him away from owning a syty at the moment.
