Screwed up guideplates?

Anybody ever run into an issue with L35s that the guideplates cause really screwed up rocker alignment?

I've read some threads about the Lt1 motors having different spacing, and needing the GMPP guideplates to fit properly. My center 2 cyls have the rockers splayed out too wide (like the slots in the plates are too close together). The outside ones are better, but they're less than ideal. Rockers are Comp Roller-tip (ball fulcrum)

I'll probably be doing adjustable guideplates unless somebody's had good luck with something else...

Thanks,

Sure they arnt on upside down?

If they are on right, how much off are they? To much to worry about grinding out a little more relief?

Re: Screwed up guideplates?

I had this prob on my vortecs after i machined them for screw in studs and 1.65 rockers. I used ford 302 guide plates in the middle 2 rockers of the vortecs. Most people dont see this prob because they use self aligning rockers with of course no need for guide plates. That straightened out the alignment of rocker tip to valve tip geometry. hope this helps

Re: Screwed up guideplates?

I am having the same problem right now with my brodix heads and comp cam guide plates on the 3rd and 4th (middle two) cylinders. I heard running adjustable guide plates will work on these pesky buggers. or cutting the middle two appart and welding them back together in the right spacing. Thats what i am going to try. Re: Screwed up guideplates?

I used adjustable guide plates for my L35 heads. The standard ones did not line up properly. I lined up the rocker and then put a small tack weld on the guide plate to prevent them from moving. Here is a link to a picture of how it turned out.

Re: Screwed up guideplates?

on the isky adjustable ones you still need to modify them (grind down the ears) so they can be pushed closer together.

Yep, they're on right. I flipped 'em just as a lark... no difference.

Maybe 1/2 the roller is actually on the valve. I can slide the plate to make one side or another line up.

The outboard cyls aren't perfect, alignment-wise, but they're alright.

I'm surprised I didn't catch this before... while degreeing the cam.
The previous owner of the heads ran them quite a while this way.

I might try the Dart ones (No welding involved):

Their Web site lists a SBC part as well. I'll probably hit their booth at the Car Craft Nats, and check 'em out.

FYI: LT1 do use different guide plates than the standard SBC. GMPP# 14011051

Interestingly enough, that comes up as a 90 deg v6 part if you google.
Specs say it's for bowtie heads.
