They're neat for a sanity check (like a gauge), but there isn't really much useful tuning you could do with one. The data moves too fast.
Now, if you could get it to "capture" the data for 30 seconds or so, then download it later for review, that *would* be fairly useful...
My .02.
I agree they are not the best tuning tool. But again, I had one on my GN's for years, and feel naked without it...I wouldn't hesitate to buy for my Sy even if I had a DM. And it does record the high or low (concerning) data for a couple of key data (O2 mV, and degrees knock retard), at least on the TR's. Yeah, tuning is limited to the O2 mV on the TR version, which doesn't even apply to the SyTy's, being that they are MAFless. But it's still nice to see all the other data, see knock, and all other engine parameters w/o having to go get the computer....it's always there, and just like looking at a boost guage (as you mentioned, & a boost guage is pretty much a must have option, I think most would say)...it's nice to look at it whenever.
Bottom line...I used my SM, everyday. The TR guages are also inaccurate (not as much as the SyTy's), but getting the digital coolant temp, mph, etc, at will is a huge convenience.
I think this is good example of not knowing what you're missing. Once a person has one, then they have qualified opinion...no offense. Kind of like a microwave. After having one for a while, most people wonder how they got along without one, or a cell phone!
Scratch the former bottom line. The new bottom line is...they're a very handy convenience. That's why they state that there have been thousands sold for the TR's.
