Possible IC leak

Is it possible for the upper cooler to leak coolant into the tb? I seem to be loosing coolant but I can't find anywhere that it is leaking out.

Re: Possible IC leak

I would fill it up and burp the air out of the system and take notice to how much your losing and inspect all the lines and lower ic for leakage

Maybe the cap doesnt fit thight enough, mine leaked so I just wrapped some teflon on the neck where the cap sits and problem solved.

There are no signs of external leakage. I don't see or smell any coolant anywhere on the engine. No leaks at the hoses or lower cooler either. I've filled it up twice in two weeks.

Re: Possible IC leak

Check the lower heat exchanger it has
also a drain plug that can leak over time
if your upper cooler core is shot i have a
clean one for sale ..

Re: Possible IC leak

Is there any extra steam coming out of the exhaust? Or, take the upper intercooler off, block the water outlet/inlet and fill with water, look in air inlet/outlet for leak.

Check the passenger side carpet is it wet? Does your windshield fog up? It could be your heater core...

Re: Possible IC leak

I dont wanna thread jack...but this sounds similar to my issue. I have coolant comming out of the upper ic cap and the overflow is full.

Re: Possible IC leak

Thanks for all the responces. No heater core leak (Is the heater core tied into this system?). No excess steam out of the exhaust either. Brassmonkey, That sounds like the test I need to make. All indications are that it is leaking into the intake air and being sucked into the engine. Anybody ever done an antifreeze injection system before haha...

Re: Possible IC leak

It is not part of the heater core. And yes, it can start to leak into the engine. If you can find no visible leaks on the lower heat exchanger, or any of the hard lines/rubber lines. That is most likely what is happening.

You really are new at this, aren't you? The intercooler system is totally seperate from the engine coolant system.

Re: Possible IC leak

Although it is not likely, you might want to check your engine oil, just to make sure the coolant isn't getting in there.

It is absolutely possible. If the leak is small enough you won't see any "steam" out of the exhaust. The upper can be pressure tested but it is best to remove it from the truck and submerge the cooler in water. A radiator pressure tester can be used if the water inlet and outlet ports are capped. If no tester is available, leave the fill cap on. Cap off one port and on the other port use a small piece of heater hose to connect to an air compressor. Regulate the pressure to around 10psi and don't go over 20psi. With the cooler submerged in water you will be able to see the air bubbles if you have a leak.

Re: Possible IC leak

My upper cooler nipple T's into my my radiador and overflow tank soooo how's that not connected to the heater core exactly? Unless my Ty is all messed up.

The intercooler and engine radiator are two separate systems that share the overflow tank. Two pressurized systems that share a no pressure, open to atmosphere tank. One system can't "push" coolant to the other or "pull" coolant from each other. They can only relieve into the overflow tank or pull out of it.

So, a heater core leak won't drain the intercooler system, only the engine coolant will go low. Clear as mud?

mine leaked into the TB-
i use orange a/f and had seen a residue inside where the butterfly's open.

i almost never had to fill mine (yearly)either so it was tricky.
