PLUGS

What type of plugs are people using. I'm thinking of going away from the rapid fires (haven't had any problems w/em). Roland was telling me, he uses NGK, but I didn't get the numbers on em.

Your input is welcomed, and I'm sure all of you will swear by the ones you use...

Keep in mind I believe Roland is running Vortecs...(heads).

If memory serves me correctly I think the NGK for those is TR6

for the stock heads they are UR5 and UR6

and there are some that have the part # of UR5IX (I think. cant recall for sure) and UR6IX

These are supposed to be a different alloy.

If you did a search on the Mailing list I'm sure it would come up......

you can go with a colder NGK with the UR6.

add an IX onto the NGK's to get an Iridium based plug. tons more money, and ungapable.

Everyone seems to be on the boat of reccomending the NGK's lately, and after putting the ur6's in my truck, I cant dissagree.

What's with the IX's, do they provide more power or better mileage? With those will I need new plug wires? I have thought about going to 8mm.

They claim better firing at higher rpm's.
Maybe the Iridium arc's over better at higher cyl. pressures.

The end result if that were true, would be increased mileage and horsepower.

But, if your not already mis-firing there would be no gain.

I posted this before but it got deleted.
If you have the Vortec heads you'll need the TR series:
TR5 V-power
TR6 V-power
TR5ix Iridium
TR6ix is not available/made

always buy new wires. If your going to be in there, change them before i starts to run like junk. cap/rotar too.

to add to the ngk fun-factor.

I'm getting smooth performance and a much cleaner idle, and this is even with the much attibuted to bad idle - low voltage present in my truck.

Yet to see how it acts when its hot (usually worse on those days) but its definately smoother right now.

What gap are people running I went with the AC plugs, KB redhot wires, Conrad cap and rotor. But I gapped the plugs at 33 I think its recommended to be 35. The TY is running insanely better. Will the Gap hurt anything?

I was told this weekend (at Shucks/Kragen) that the UR4 was supposed to be for stock. What are the gaps on the UR4,5 and 6's? The guy there couldn't tell me.

Two part deal here, I was told UR4 was stock @ Shucks (but for some reason I seem to trust the people on this board more thu) and i priced the IX plugs -- $12.00 a FUGIN PLUG (I crapped myself ran in circles and laughed, what would you do?)

Has anyone used the IX plugs? and what will going with a colder plug do?

Guys,
The gap is more or less a test and see ....BUT its a good idea to start around .035....
I ran the TR5s in my ty and the idle is better...runs better
I believe the IX will allow more boost at higher RPM with out puttin out the spark....

At the nats Peter ran a 11.0 with the IX plugs...
truck SMOKED all 4 tires at the line..(out of the water box)
THAT WAS IMPRESSIVE!!!!!

Reallyyyyyhe, he, he... that's cool, but I would like to know still what's the effect of going w/a colder plug?

Wouldn't the spark plugs and gaps be different on the Sonoma GT's normally aspirated hi-po CPI 4.3?

I wouldn't know! But I do know that I did change the plugs this weekend to the 4's seems to run fine.

Also I talked to my best friend who is a mechanic at Toyota and he told me the IX plugs were good for 120,000 miles, no real hp gains, and that they are starting to come stock in the newer Toyota's.

I also asked him (since he's a mechanic and no else could tell me...) about what's it mean to run with a colder plug, his response was that plugs have a cold to hot operating range, and running with a hot plug can lead to run on or dieseling because it tends to burn everything in the chamber, and the only time I would want to run hot is if I was burning oil (things to that effect). He also said that the best plug for any vehicle, is the one recommended by the manf.

Why would you ask for people's advise on what plugs to use then end up with NGK UR4's? Your gonna get some flames for this.

The intent was not to get flames, but to get a feel. As I said in the begining I was thinking of going over to NGK, no one said not to. I asked for advice and got some, did some more searching, made my decision, simple as that. No need to get any hot heads going.
