Please help me order the right exhaust system!

Well, I gutted my cat to fix a rattling noise (see other post) and now my Sy is overboosting like crazy. Obviously, I need to replace the converter with a new one to regain backpressure but I'd like to upgrade my entire exhaust system from the turbo back while I'm at it. Here's what I'm thinking:

-ATR SS cat-back system
-ATR 3" downpipe with 1 3/4" billet wastegate
-ATR wastegate control valve and metered "Y"
-ATR 3" stainless cat converter

Here's the catch. I DO NOT want to upgrade my turbo now. Funds will not allow for it at the moment but eventually I want to go with a PTE turbo setup. My goal is get this truck into the high 11s so whether I go with Kenne Bell, ATR, PTE, or Atomic Rooster really doesn't make much of a difference to me.

First, will the complete ATR exhaust system allow me to use the stock turbo or does the 3" ATR downpipe only work with TE series turbos? If I go with this setup, then I will do the ATR headers at some point as well to keep things simple. Second, does the system I've listed above require any welding? I'm really looking for a weekend "bolt on" exhaust system if possible. Sorry for the lengthy post but I'm about to slap down some big money and I don't want to fuck it up.

Thanks

just get the catback, and order a cat that brian fischer posted early. high flow cat was like 60 bux, and the atr exhaust. no point of buying an atr downpipe for a turbo you dont have, if you are going to get the pt&e kit, also same with the atr wastegate. there wastegate is just shit. i'd rather use a stock gate, then a POS atr gate. and there downpipe sucks, because i like to change my number 6 plug.

Bdubb - you make a good point. I'm just going to order the ATR cat-back system with a new high-flow cat. Can you please tell me where to get this Brian Fisher cat? Is it a direct replacement with a rear flange and front slip-on or do I need to have it welded? I want to order this stuff tomorrow so I can get rid of my overboost problem ASAP.

Thanks

it doesnt have a flange, its just a universal high flow cat. fischer would have to post were he found it.

why is the ATR gate a POS??

because why would you want a POS gate, that you have to have repaired to make it work right? why not just get a good gate, to begin with?

HKS or Innovative, or the PTE integral.

I ordered the ATR SS cat-back system today and their direct-replacement high-flow cat converter. This should bring boost back under control with my stock turbo/wastegate/ecu. When I do decide to upgrade those items, I'm most likely going to go with a PTE turbo setup.

You made the right choice to get the high flow cat with it so the exhaust is 3" through the cat and throughout the rest of the exhaust. You might have a prob. with the cat when you order your PTE setup. PTE dp is 3" and the atr high flow cat is 2.5" in (to mate with the stock dp) and 3" out...correct me if im wrong. I just installed the PTE kit on my bro's truck and he had an atr 3" cat back exhaust. Well, with the 3" cat back, it has a 2.5" inlet to mate with the stock 2.5" cat. Since the idiots at the auto place welded that pipe directly to the muffler, I think he will be running open exhaust for a while.
But, PTE includes a 3" test pipe and 3" in/out cat so you can remove the cat you just bought from ATR and still use the ATR 3" exhaust all the way out. I hope this makes sense.

Jordan, you are correct. I was aware that ATR sells converters with both sized inlets. I'm going to replace the existing converter with a 3" unit once I upgrade my downpipe. For now, I just want to get the backpressure back under control. I'm also going to order an external wastegate and have it welded to the crossover pipe; most forum members seem to recommend these for solid boost control.

The external wastegate is a good idea. Get one of these from mike at AR Autosports.

Hello boost control!

Yep, i recently installed that gate on my ty. It is awesome. Solid boost control. Just be sure you get a stiffer spring. I can't seem to get over 15psi on mine b/c I only have the 8lb spring.

Damn, that looks tasty! How much $$ are we talking about? Do you set the boost in the cab or do you have to pop the hood to adjust it?

I bought a walker high flow cat thats warranteed (is that right???) for life. It's 3" both ends. The downpipe problem was solved also by my exhaust guy. I had a atr dp but i just had new a custom one made and there is a notch where the sixth plug is so i can get at it. The walker cat was 108. Hope this helps. One other thing. I have the atr wastegate and i pump the turbo all the way to 30lbs and it worked perfectly.

Jordan. Its your boost controller not the wastegate. Your base boost wont be less than 8psi, but your max boost should be unlimited.

A notch?? please elaborate.. this doesnt sound good.

Actually this sounds like it is not working, and most certainly why your motor blew.

I have a Blitz boost controller mounted inside. My base boost with the controller is 8psi right on. But, I can run it to where the vacuum line isn't fed any boost, and it seems that the exhaust gasses push open the valve. Maybe I can hook up a pressure regulator to the top port on the gate so it will put pressure on top of the diaphram. Do you think that might help? I only have the boost controller hooked up to the side port.
btw, with the gain feature on the controller turned all the way up and the 9/11 TC, the stock turbo gives an instant 15 psi. No lag or anything. That wastegate is way better than the HKS gate I had on the ATR setup.
Thanks
Jordan
