new guy- ty as daily driver?

only made a few posts so .. hello. :rock:

always wanted one of these when they came out but i couldnt afford it.. now i'm looking to get a ty but need it to be a daily driver. havent been reading on here a whole lot yet but searching hasnt gotten me where i'm lookin. just wondered if one of these can be reliable enough as a daily driver. or if they all pretty much break parts left and right etc... not going to be racing it or anything, but i'm sure it will get alot of road time on the back moutain roads.

any advice?

anything in particular that tends to go on these things? i'm new to turbos but im a mod junky and a fairly competent motorcycle wrench in my spare time. i can deal with small stuff easily, but if i'm needing a new tranny every 6 mo, well... also not sure how easy it is to get parts for stuff that breaks on this thing since they didnt make many.

I am getting my Sy this weekend. It is going to be used as my daily driver also. I only have to drive 18 miles one way to work though on 3rd shift and only 4 days a week. It already has the mods to go 11's with the right man tuning it of course. I believe I have that taken care of. I wish the best of luck to both of us using these as daily drivers.

basically it's an old truck. everything is getting old. everthing starts breaking. not talking about just the drivetrain here

then you add on the fact that you're gonna be running the truck hard because nobody buys these to drive like a grandma.

then add on the fact that gas mileage sucks, and gas prices are really high right now.

then add on the fact that if something breaks that's syty specific, you're gonna be without something to drive until you locate a used part because just about everything's discontinued and not available from the dealer new.

then there's the fact that these trucks drive like crap. steering sucks. even with steering mods, it may drive better but it's still a bitch compared to your modern day vehicles.

lastly, good luck finding someone that knows how to work on these trucks... you better be good at turning wrenches.

so... very bad idea as a daily driver. i did it for a little over a year, and as soon as I started modifying it I had to buy another car to use as a driver.

i use mine as a daily driver.... its failed me only once when the fuel pump went out other than that its done great

i say go for it.... i did and i love it :rock:

I agree, however, I still play with idea of having a daily driver Ty, however, I do all my own work. If I was going to daily driver SyTy, I would buy a well kept one to start with. Do a search on daily driver or reliability.

yeah my thought was to try to find a clean low miles one that has some kind of good history, but thats all tough to do not knowing the seller. but i mean i drive like 15 miles to work, and possibly can keep my current borrowed freebie truck as a back up.

do these things feel like cheap rattle traps when you're riding around?

EXACTLY!!!!!

You must be willing to spend time and money maintaining it....that means replacing stuff before they go bad, even if it seems rediculous at the time :tup:
It WILL break down on you at some points , it can be frustrating until you get to "know" your truck.

I say go for it! There should be plenty of help here so you wont be in the dark when run into trouble. Also, read alot of the threads here, especialy in the tech forums so you know what to expect!

I've daily driven mine for 4 years,on a rebuilt engine,3 tranny failures,and a walbro dying.

50k miles I've done,but I wouldn't even wanna think of all the $ I've spent/hours I've spent wrenching.

If you don't mind working on it,a stock truck will prolly be ok for you.If you are a novice,a modded truck can be a nightmare.

IMHO they cannot be beat in the performace/dollar ratio.I got 100k supercar performance in mine for 1/4 the cost.I still got 10 bazillion things I wanna mod/improve (BRAKES fo sho) and if I had to do it all over again I would.

BUT

I would not get one if i was broke.These trucks will suck your wallet dry in a heartbeat.They are old,they are pissy,and they will leave you high and dry.Don't expect to just put gas in it and drive.

Go for it. Even knowing I will have access to another daily driver, I would find it difficult to choose it over the ty.

I daily drove my '92 Ty for a couple years. In the beginning, all was well, I had a smile on my face, and never really had a problem with it....

Then the original tranny failed, then the replacement tranny failed, then the starter pooped out, then the IC pump died,then... oh, nevermind, I think you get my point. :wink:

i daily drove mine from december 2000 till august 2001 when it got stolen. it had 106k on it when i got it. all i did was replace the thermostat and heater core. but i did break something in the trans when i was on it hard and a light changed and i downshifted. accelerated fine but one of the one way clitches or whatever broke would freewheel when you let off. aside form that and a bad oil sender it was a great daily. even though i was driving it aorund on a bent conn rod. now with the fresh motor and the mccoy stage 4 and plugs i cant get to cause of headers im sure ill never use it for a daily again.
