Need some help...kinda long

Well I just purchased myself a syclone and its in need of a little TLC. I am farely knowledgeable when it comes to Buicks as I had a GN but not to these trucks. Anyway, It runs like crap to say the least. The tranny is slipping, it stalls when i put it into gear as well as clunks like a mofo. In my GN, i had the good ol' scan master to tell me what was going on under the hood. Do they have something similar to this that can help in tuning? From what the guy told me that sold me the truck, it has 30lb injectors? I do know it has a fairly big cam like 500 inch lift and ported vortec heads, matched ported intake, roller rockers and the usual stuff like a high flow fuel pump, msd ignition and something about a bigger water pump since these trucks are water cooled? (explanation please)? It has a bigger garret turbo looks like the typical hybrid but has shaft play so that needs rebuilt and a 3" DP. He said has slips for like a 12.5 @114 but like i said runs like crap. I know that chips play a huge role and this one has a stock chip. Maybe the biggest prob? Also only had a stock converter as well so Im thinking with this cam, a little bit of stall is needed? What do you think the fuel pressure should be set at? It reads on the guage in the truck at idle, at 48psi. I thought that was a little high. Im sure the INjectors are getting way over worked as well. I dont know, a little frustrated to see such a rare truck not kept up . Any help, advice would be great to get this thing running better.
p.s Do any of you know where i can get a good deal on a tranny?

Hey,

Sounds like you got yourself a handfull there. Yes, tuning is very important with these trucks. You have a lot questions and and for a lot of them you may have to provide more information.

Who owned the truck before you? Is this an ATR parts catalog truck?

The water pump you were talking about is referred to as a Lower Intercooler Pump. This pump pushes more water through the Upper IC.

First things first you should run through the Ignition and get that shaped up. That maybe your stumbling / stalling right there. Also verify stock chip.

For trannies there's a bunch of options depending on your Location and how much you want to spend.

i pretty sure that stock chips dont really like .500 lift cams either. i would verify the timing is correct as well. unplug tan wire under passenger side dash and throw a light on it to make sure it is where it should be.

I'll get to looking at all this stuff today and get back with you guys. The truck does click and click and click like the batteries dead then will finally turn over. I was told though by him that all these truck have that prob? I also have to figure out why the speedo doesnt work either....errrr...just the little stuff to drive you nuts. I got it from a guy in Texas. Sy #262....

Yeah, the starter issue is something easily fixed. There's a couple ways you can do it, but initially it just requires a wire replacement on the starter. I added a secondary relay to help mine and I haven't had a problem since.

As far as the speedo, that can be a couple different things, but I'm sure it's fixable.

But get used to it. There's ALWAYS going to be something wrong with these trucks, but they're still fun as hell. 8)

Code what?
You should drop the ECM from behind the passenger side dash and verify that it has the stock 2bar chip. I would suggest looking into a 3bar Ultimate (Vortec heads/Cam version) for use with 50# Injectors from raceprovenmotors.com.

Stock base fuel pressure is 42psi (vacuum line off the regulator) If you are running the stock chip, keep your Boost below 15psi. It will only provide you with enough fuel for 15psi.

If you have a Laptop PC check out datamaster at ttspowersystems.com. A very good scantool for tuning and troubleshooting

Sounds like you got a truck with lots of potential, Does it have a built motor?

not sure if it has a built motor or not. Like I said though...this thing runs like s#!t. I decided today after tinkering with it that Im just going to start tearing it apart . Theres just wiring everywhere. I have no idea of what runs what it just sucks man really. I need to find some guys here in Tucson to maybe give me a hand. The turbo needs rebuilt. It has way to much shaft play for me. The steering box has lots of play and that is going to be reeeal fun to replace. The supposally ATR DP leaks at the clamp which to me is stupid to clamp a DP so im going to fab up my own and weld it. Its just a lot of stuff and never enough time...you guys know how that is..lol. this guy had set the FP probably at like 50 static since it reads like 45 with the line on...I NEED LOTS OF PARTS!!! how much are injectors, matching chip etc for these?

Needs tuning, Trucks not running a 100%
Took truck to the track After 2 passes TRANS started to slip

at first glance, the truck looks great inside and out...even has polished wheels and the bed cover....upon closer inspection, you will find that the truck has been repainted and the cladding has been clear coated...the passenger side door doesn't exactly line up with the fender line...a ram-air ws6 hood scoop has been retrofitted...again, the interior looks clean...the headliner has been modified with a flame pattern in the foam under the black fabric....it has a nice boost controller...under the hood is where the biggest red flags were....i saw the truck while the heads were out around 5 months ago....it had trw pistons that do not resemble low compression ones....he did the vortec conversion....looks sloppy under the hood though....when i recently looked under the hood, an msd 6al box fell down between the abs and driver's exhaust manifold...the owner is ready to dump this truck from what i can tell...he has no interest in retorquing the heads and it has been to the track a number of times and raced with a slipping tranny...in my opinion, the truck needs $XX00.00 under the hood and $XX00.00 in the tranny to make a decent truck....also if you check the sportmachines registry, two registered owners before this guy, reported 30k on the odometer as well....i think the truck was put together using a cleaner donor truck as he offered to throw in a set of sy seats, a syty tranny and transfer case, as well as other misc. interior parts for nothing...then he claimed he had lost them....then he called me back and asked me what i think all of those parts would be worth to me because he found them again and wanted to sell them now....sounds like bad business practices if you ask me...when you start the truck and put it into gear, it dies...then you get alot of starter click before it turns over again...you have to pump the throttle while shifting into gear (too keep it running) and after a big jerk, you are ready to go...it needs a little more than tuning on the low end...lots of creaking and popping and some grinding in the front right side of the truck when you turn the steering wheel (same side that the fender and door don't line up)...missing one piece of cladding (rear driver's arch)....and three dents on the same side of the bed...so its good and bad...i would much rather buy a stock, rusty unmolested 200k truck for 6 or 7k than to buy this ?k nice looking truck for 6 or 7k....."

cheers

I really doubt it as I’ve never heard of anyone using them and even if they were its probably a very small step up, if at all.

Could you guys lead me in the right direction. I need to know where i can get some parts for this thing for farley decent prices but have no idea.
Your thoughts or suggestions would be great too. I was thinking about 50lb injectors with of course a chip to match. Rebuilding the turbo...dont know what it is. What kinda plugs? wires? anything else that i can do to get this thing running good and haulin ass.....thanks

We're all here to help. The chipping you can do if you're slick like that or you can definately find some one to help you fine tune your truck by rotating 2-3 chips as you work on the tune with some of the more knowledgable people here.

For your trans:

John Waller (JWaller on the board)
George Blake (Contact Info?)
Brian Hartman (Contact Info?)
Roadmaster Transmissions in Chicago (Ditto)

I personally have a Waller transmission. He came all the way to Germany to rebuild it for me. One of the other guys that I set him up with had a small problem and he flew all the way to Zurich Switzerland to help address it. I'm not saying that the others wouldn't have...but I've just got a longer standing buisness relationship with Waller.

The problems I've found with slightly modified trucks like yours (and mine apparently) is that you don't know exactly what has been done to them. When in doubt you might as well replace what you don't know. In the case of your injectors...sounds like a set of 50lb'rs are in your future. That would go nicely with the chip that you're going to have to burn.

Any other questions?

Thanks a lot for the help. I'll have to get some injectors and a chip ordered up along with some sort of scan tool. Ill keep in touch with anything else. I really appreciate it guys.

hey guys is the data master a scan tool in itself like the scanmaster is for the Buicks? Or do I have to get a lap top for this set up? Do they have anything like the scanmaster if the datamaster is ran by laptop? Just kinda trying to save as much money as possible since i dont have a laptop...if thats the case?

I'm on the East side of Tucson (Golf Links/Pantano area) and have a Typhoon. I've got the data cable and the software somewhere, but I sold my laptop a while back. I can probably borrow it back since it was a buddy that bought it, but it really sound like you should start with a full tune and figure out what you have before you go any further.

You're looking at spending probably 2-3k to fix the truck up right I would guess, assuming nothing major is wrong other than the tranny.

I'm in the process of putting a tranny in mine right now, oh the fun of doing this a second time. Its built by a buddy of mine that's been doing them as side jobs for the past 7-8 years. I only know of one that had a problem and he went so far as to go fix it on the side of the road at 3AM for the guy. My tranny died by the way of an exploded input drum, nothing else looked out of spec. :(

you DO need a laptop, no there is no tool like scan master...i had scan master on the gn and loved it but it is not a "scan" tool all it really does is help set the tps and make sure while you are driving nothing very bad is happening..the datamaster is a scan tool because it records everything happening and you can go back change things and try again...with the datamaster you will also need the cable to att to the aldl port from your laptop..do a search for a link to order that and you can pick up a laptop on ebay for 100 the cable and software for 200 and for the same price as a scan master be on your way to tunning........

plus just about everytone on here uses or knows how to use the datamaster and can look at your file and go over it with you.

Dude I have to tell ya, save your self $2,000 and do the tranny yourself...IF YOU ARE COMPETENT--BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF... when my wife blew ours up last year, I priced around and the cheapest I could find was $1,700.. So I started to choke cause I had no way to afford it and I needed my truck (daughter to drive around). So I bought the Hanes book at Autozone and started to read it just to see if it was something I thought I could really handle doing on my own. I had always taken my trannys to a particular guy cause he always did a kick ass job. When I told him I was gonna do it myself he pretty much told me to screw off when I asked him for advice. What a guy...even after all the thousands of dollars I dropped in his place. Ill be honest, it will really help to sniff out a guy at a good tranny shop who will coach you when you need it ( you will ). You can get a master kit for like $3-400. Make sure that if you do decide to do it dont waste the money on ordinary parts. Get heavy duty forward and rear sprags, check the casing for cracks, have the in and output shafts checked out and get heavy duty gears. your best bet is to read up on it first so that when you call a tranny shop for advice you dont sound like a fool. Trust me, they may not like that youre doing it alone but they will show you some respect. If any of em say bring it in hang up. When I found a guy to help me out, I paid him everytime he helped me even if it was a simple question. That will keep him helpin ya and keep your job easier. The biggest pain about the whole process is getting the friggin thing in anf out of the truck. If you can build motors you can build a trans. Its not as hard as people make it out to be. You just have to take your time , buy the good stuff, and stay organized. Dont throw anything away til youre done. When I had mine all together and back in the truck it wouldnt shift out of first, I thought CRAP!!! I should have listened. When I talked to my guy about it over the phone he told me to bring the gaskets that were left in the box(you get two sets). I bring them down he tells me to put the ones I didnt use in instead cause the ones i put in were for earlier aps. I am talking about the valve body by the way. So i went home pulled the pan and VB, put it all back together the way he told me and BAM. It was like champagne flooding the heavens. Had to be the greatest feeling in the world. Not a bad mistake for my first time. Everyone thoguht I was nuts but as I was goinmg through everything I thought it really wasnt that bad. I f you need help let me know I ll do my best.
