making the right choice?

thanks for the responses, but I'm really surprised. A lot of you guys are as sick as me - hahaha.

However, I took the first step and the Syc is now registered again and I was able to keep the personal plate (ROBOTRK). so the license plate has a sticker good until November 2005. Next step is the state inspection.

that low mileage Syc on Ebay sold for $23K which means it sold for almost exactly the dealer price. I know because I have the all the original paper work, invoice etc. So the poor truck has been sitting for 14 years and is worth the price of a new Toyota. Had I seen/heard that the values in auction were higher, I could substantiate the Syc as an investment that grows in value but instead I am not getting either a "fun/enjoyment" or "financial" return for owning it.

almost near my 50th birthday, not having the fun of driving something special (even though I own 4 special vehicles), not having $9K to buy another special vehicle, and having the need to either use something that's sitting or buy a $2K car - I am coming very close to bringing her out and using her - (she is only car, right?).

yeah the rain, snow, idiots and all that stuff is going to make driving my brand new Syclone hard to do but people do it all the time with their new Mercedes, Corvettes, Hummers, all that cost more than the Syclone.

I'm going to look at a $1800 Olds 88 with less than 80K miles, but it won't even cost that much to pull out Syclone #42 and start using it. At sometime every Syclone had 800 miles on it.

thanks again for dialog. it has been helpful. this is longest period (2 days) I have been OK with driving the Syclone. Previously the thought only lasted a few minutes.

I'd have to say I agree with the dont drive it crowd.

Buy another high mileage beat up Sy and just toss parts at it to keep it running.
Nothing go fast or high dollar.

At least that way when people who know Syclones see it and are like wow that thing needs work.
You can tell them its your "beater" truck to save the 800 mile Sy you have in the garage. oh what a feeling that must be.

I am going against the majority here..
Drive it.

As sweet and rare as it is, it is just a vehicle. (gawd i sound like my wife)
IMO these are not meant to sit....No offense to Junior or any of the other low mileage owners.....but the reason we own these odd vehicles is because they look good, and are fun to drive, and fast as fawk. Nothing like a boosted launch, or a punch getting on the highway, from 10-80 in no time flat.

Get it insured for what its worth....25K. Pay a few more bucks to mr or ms insurance agency, so if it gets hit you get what you need out of it....

Congrats for keeping it low mileage for so long....but

Get in, fire it up, and drive what is arguably the fastest, and most fun truck on the planet.....You obviously have the need for speed, or you wouldn't be into these vehicles....how can a buick lesabre make you happy when you have such bad ass vehicles sitting in the garage.....

I don't want it, to let it sit. My Ty came with 4300 miles it now has 5000. OK most of it is from driving back and forth to Morgan's house  But I drive it 1-2x's a week. I just like to start off with a virgin.
I say drive it like you stole it, if not sell it to me.
Yes these trucks will be collectors items, hell they already are, but in my 10 years experience as a financial advisor, motor vehicles rarely make any sense as an investment. Yes some will go up in value, but you will never get back what you put into them. Keep it for sentimental reasons, something to play with your kids, something to show, but not to appreciate in value like an investment. There are way too many better ways to make your money grow...

as for cars/trucks as a financial investment..

they are, but it takes a good 30 years to see a gain.

and now-a-days with how much new cars/trucks cost, i doubt in the future they will be a worthy investment.

hell, how much can a 45k c6 corvette be worth 30 years from now.. depending on inflation and the value of a dollar I guess you could get your money back.

think of it like this, in 1967 a brand new 427 corvette convert was "expensive" (A couple grand) now one in decent shape is worth $30k EASY..

hell just about any 1965-1967 corvette convert is worth $30k.

I've seen a mint 427 1967 corvette sell for around $60k

Hey, I knew it was a bigblock :(

The 67 original 427 are the ones worth the money :) The nice restore 427 Vette are up around 100K last time I looked, nice 327 aren't cheap either.

The flip side to that coin Smaug - If you took that "few" grand and put it into the market, or say Intel since the 1960's, by now you'd have, if not, close to a million dollars for every dollar you invested as opposed to just 30k. Think how many cars you can buy then. I'll take those returns any day...Like I said, sure they may go up, but there are far better vehicles for your money if you want return on your investment...

BTW how'd you make out with SIRI ?

Buy a beater and drive the Syclone only on nice days if you must drive it. I wouldn't drive it all in the winter if they salt roads.

you only live once by the same token syclones were only made once. once you put miles on yours it will never be the same as it is now. its your car so its up to you what you want to do with it. but why not trade it for an awesome higher mileage one (from a syty'er who knows what he's doing) plus say $5k+ cash. also I've heard that a lot of problems and maintenance issues with these trucks is from sitting too long. so keep in mind that even though it has so few miles it doesn't mean it won't have any problems, in fact it may end up being a maintenance nightmare if it becomes a daily driver.

I was at the Turkey Rod Run in Daytona. I go every year. It's a big car show, swap meet, with all kinds of parts and cars for sale. I did see a Typhoon this year, pretty cool. But the asking prices on the cars for sale was outrageous. 125k for a Shelby Mustang GT 500KR... and the estimated value of that vehicle in 3 years is somewhere around 300k.
I know a friend of a friend with a GNX he bought with 280 miles on it (he's 2nd owner), still has the sticker on the window, and the plastic on the seats. He takes it out on the weekends...tried to race him and he wouldn't go for it.

Sure these vehicles will be worth money.. but if that's what you want, then get into real estate. You'll never lose money on a house... and you can make 160k profit in 2 years easily.
Owning a mint condition rare vehicle is cool and all. But I'd rather be the one who actually enjoyed driving that rare vehicle. Now you just own 1 of 2998 syclones, I drive and enjoy 1 of 2998, and mine's a Saudi. What's the point of having it if you're not going to enjoy it...Just don't drive it into the ground and rag the piss out of it. Take care of it and don't let it go to crap... which everyone should do with anything they own. The choice is yours though. Sorry for the long post

No 454's in '67.

Yeah, the 427 BB are the ones worth the money. Mint BB go for $100k+ easily.

Back to the topic now:

Please DON'T daily drive your 800 mile Syclone. :(

IMO, you should keep it in the garage. Yes, people drive their Mercedes, Corvettes, and Hummers in the rain and snow, but all of those vehicles, even though they cost more, are easily replaceable. There are only so many Syclones left in the world, and there are never going to be any more. Values will go up in time. These trucks have hit the bottom of their depreciation curve, and the nice, low-mileage ones may have even started to gain value recently. It takes time for any auto to gain value, unless it's an ultra-rare exotic in high demand.

I guess I'd have to say that I don't see why you can't get a decent daily driver, plus drive the Sy, Gn, and what ever else you have setting in the garage. I don't mean everyday but a sunny day, fair weather ride. That way you keep the miles down, your grin up, and you keep things lubricated so all your seals don't dry rot. I guess it's your car/truck and you can obviously do what you want but you've taken care of them this long so why ruin them now....

low milage Sy+low milage GN=start charging $5 at the door, you'll have a nice beater in no time  For a month or two just get a POS till you can drive your T's.

you guys are killing me but I did ask so thanks for being honest. I guess I should have asked over at the "housewives forum".

Maybe I should have asked a little differently though - what would you do if you were in the same boat? I think it is a little easy to tell me not to drive the Syc when you all are driving your Sy/Tys. but do you know how hard it is to see a brand new Syclone everyday just sitting and then to be without transportation? What's the first thing you say or think when you see a person driving something nice - you say wow isn't that great that they have something like that to drive.

its kind of funny that maybe a few of you wish you had a low mileage Syc sitting in the garage but I kind of envy you guys for being able to hop in your Sy/Ty and go for a ride and use them.

My engine builder is going to make a spot in the building for me to bring in (tow in) the Syclone and we'll change/check fluids, treat her easily and fire her up. If I still decide to put her on the road - we'll open up the exhaust, put K&N on the intake, up the gas delivery and new chip. that way she'll stay mostly stock. Maybe I'll pull off the wheels/tires and put something else on in case they are hard to find.

Except for reading the posts here and looking at the lousy weather, I am getting pretty excited about driving my Syclone.

The funny thing is, most of us that love these trucks on this board have a driver SyTy, a fast or stock SyTy that sits in the garage 70% of the time. This truck has only 800 miles on it, try finding one with that mileage, you won't.

There is no way I would daily drive it , let alone mod it. Just my :2cents:
