JSM coilovers

I installed my JSM coilover kit to save some weight to run better at the dragstrip but found many other benefits. It drives and rides better than it did before and I am not even using the swaybar not to mention its adjustable in ride height in the front and uses 12 way adjustable shocks. At high speeds the truck seems much more stable also. I found there is no need for suspension limiters at the drag strip in the front when the shocks are set on a high setting to prevent front end lift at launch ( 1.44 60'). Thank you for a great product!

I would agree with what Phillip says about the handling and ride improvement. I have not yet made it to the track. I hope to see better 60' time soon.

hopefully no more massive front end lift, eh? :D

I cant wait to finally get my truck running.. I am hopefull it cures the wandering problem my truck has ALWAYS had.. I plan to FULLY test the welds that other vendors point fingers at too at my local SCCA event here in town if the dayang thing ever runs !!

This kit is on my want list as well...would be good if there was a kit for the rear too...

Re: JSM coilovers

I've been thinking about coilover
It's time for some major front end work.
I see that rpm has them and they fit into the stock location without cutting and wielding

do you change the alighnment spec with the coilovers?
would this change the price in the truck ( sence everything is stock and I have all documents)
what shocks come with these?
is it something I can change years later or maybe use kby/bilsteins

Neither kit requires welding.

Both do require cutting.

Differences is the angle of the ball joint and which version you personally like.

When I designed my kit, knowing GM took a 4x4 chassis, and lowered it for the syty it was clear to me the stock angle was already at an extreme position. Being most lower their trucks further this angle gets worse. With the new corrected angle, the ball joint is in approx. mid travel at ride height.

Of course this is my view and what i have discovered after 2+ years of building and testing them on several trucks.

Phil's truck is the 2nd I know of running my suspension in the 10's. Both owners have commented on how straight the trucks launch, and how stable they are at speed.

They are going to require cutting (usually 4 parts cut ) to fit any Coilovers in AWD SyTy. One my truck, I could have gotten away without cutting one of the upper arm mounts, and I didn't have to cut as much off the rearward brace, however it cleans up that area and would look stupid with excess over hang. This mod is reversible in term of fitting the stock suspension. In terms of being 100% factory correct, you would need to remove and weld on new mounts. I wouldn't do this for a ultra low mileage collector SyTy if you going for 100% orignal. Most people would never notice this cuts.

I never thought about the coilovers would result in a drop in 60' or 1/4 except for the weigh loss. I am pretty excited about this since my truck's 60' is usually in the 1.8's (most of its tires). New tires and this suspension, maybe I will see an ocassional 1.6 :D

Re: JSM coilovers

One aspect of Tyfoo's questions that Jeff didn't answer directly, and I have seen it mentioned many times...
Camber is camber
toe is toe
caster is caster

Regardless of the angle of the ball joint in the design, one SHOULD be able to run the stock alignment specs with either kit. The exact position of the aduster cams to achieve that alignment will likely be different from one supplier to the other.

I have not heard that either kit can not achieve stock alignment specs. The only way this could happen is if the caster or camber caused by a change from stock geometry would cause the suspension to run out of adjustment travel before reaching the desired alignment settings. I can't believe this would be the case with either design (especially with camber... I mean, who would make a kit that prevents the wheel from being vertical... oh, yeah, I forgot the ricer guys.... well, we're not them!). Now, just because one CAN run the stock alignment doesn't mean one SHOULD. In particular, it has been discussed that with 275 series tires in front, more caster is probably a good thing. It would be interesting to know if one kit allows more caster than the other. I sort of doubt it.... that would mean the tubular portion of the arms were made to relocate the upper or lower ball joints farther forward or aft compared to the stock suspension. This would be an unwise thing to do unless researched very carefully, and I'm pretty sure neither supplier did so (at least not on purpose).

So unless someone wants to jump in here and explain otherwise, I would say either kit CAN be adjusted to the camber, caster and toe settings called for by GM.

Re: JSM coilovers

I remember in the testing of the first JSM kit, we went through many many many alignment settings before finding that more caster is better (forget the exact numbers), but we started at stock, and kept adding until a good medium was found between steering feel, weight, and performance.

I concur that either kit can be adjusted to the GM spec, but I don't think the GM spec is appropriate (almsot said correct)......More caster than stock, close to zero toe, and camber in the 1/2 degree range seems to work VERY well on every truck I have installed a set onto/test drove (I haven't been allowed to drive all installations).....

:werd: JS coils will find their way onto my new chassis as well in the near future

on a side note, and not to hijack this thread. But where can I get front end limiters? Searching gives me nothing.

What coilovers are being used in these kits? I saw the one installed on the Sytyauthority Typhoon and they looked like they were Tial from the green, but I doubt that is the case...

Do you have any pics of the install or anything. I'm totaly lost on how they work and what they do. Just heard they help out ALOT along with the caltracs. ;)

Re: JSM coilovers

What about the guys that dont drag race?

How do they handle on the road?

can you use other shocks

is the spring part of the shock?

will they take the abuse of the road ( pothole, north east roads )

They handle & ride better than the factory front suspension. You need a coilover shock. You can use any coilover shock and spring as long as the spring diameter is small enough. Personally I would recommend the QA1's because of packaging. The Bilstein of PEP kit have a slightly larger spring and the the shock extends too far IMO.
