First half-throttle stumbling, now WOT stumbling

When I first got my Ty, I noticed at half throttle it would stumble just a little bit. Then it got a little worse and started blowing black smoke out the back. At WOT it was fine - felt strong. We changed the plugs (NGK) and wires (ATR) but it still did the same thing.

Now at WOT the truck is hesitating and stumbling, so we ordered a new ignition coil and module and put those in. Still doing the same thing. We also looked for vacuum leaks - found one and fixed it - but the truck still does the same thing. I thought the black smoke was unburned fuel, so I figured it was ignition.

I don't have a laptop or datamaster or anything like that. I'm sure that would help. I'm just lost right now - I can't figure out what else it could be.

My mods are: 3Bar chip, AFPR, stock injectors, Walbro high flow fuel pump, 160 stat, K&N, intercooler pump hotwired, no cat, dynomax muffler

Is the tach jumping?Check engine light come on?What fuel pressure you running?Do you have a boost gauge?

Jimmy - yes when the car stumbles, the tach flutters.

The check engine light does not come on.

The fuel pressure is set at 50 lbs

Yes I have a boost gauge. With this chip, it's set for max of 16 psi. At WOT, it used to max right at 16 psi. It's never gone over. Now at WOT it gets up to about 14 psi, but no more.

Also - when you start up the truck, it sounds like an injector is clicking. Maybe a bad injector?

Tach flutter is ignition related. When was the last time you replaced the cap and rotor? I'd pull the plugs and make sure you didn't crack the porcelin on one when you changed them out. Also make sure your timing is set at 0. You may be running too much FP as well,I'm pretty sure the chip was designed to work best between 43-45 psi.

If your 3bar chip is a ultimate fuel pressure should be at 50 lbs. initially and adjust as needed.

I'd change all the vac lines under the hood and secure them with zip-ties.

Cap,rotor replace.

Ohm all the plug wires.

Check the condition of each plug as you remove it. Note the color for each cylinder. Plenty of websites describe reading plugs.

Which coil and module?
Some of the chain parts store types can cause issues as will several aftermarket coils.
This sounds like typical problems that I have dealt with on trucks local to me.
Check everything ignition related with a microscope. NEVER assume a ignition wire is good because it is new.

Jimmy - we just replaced the cap and rotor today. The truck still does the same thing.

The plugs are fine.

The coil and module are GM - got them at a local dealership.

We are thinking it's possibly a bad injector.

Took it out today and on the first run when the truck was cool it didn't stutter, but the boost only went up to 14 psi. Once the truck was hot, I hit it around 10 mph and it stumbled. Boost shot up to 18 psi - that's the first time it's ever gone over 16 psi. The vacuum lines look good - nice and soft - looks like the previous owner went through and replaced them and zip tied them up.

Thanks for your input guys. We will look through the ignition again and check the plug wires. I don't know what else it could be. Something wrong with the computer?

Spark plugs are brand new NGKs

The plug wires are two weeks old - I ordered them from ATR. We zip-tied them and kept them away from the headers and turbo.

Don't mean to sound like a flame, but we see this too many times on the board.

-newbie complains of problems
-everyone tells them it's ignition, plugs, wires, cap rotor
-newbie says 'no, it's all new'
-everyone yells at newbie
-newbie finds out that it's ignition based. I would say 9 out of 10 times, there is a wire issue - burned wire, plug end isn't on 100%, bad plug wire straight out of the box.

Open up, and take another look at your .. . . . . . . . .

That sucks that this happens all the time on the board. I guess for those of you that are sick of answering these repetitive questions - don't answer. I think it's great you guys have a website for people to come and seek advice and talk to other Sy/Ty owners. But I'm not exactly a newbie. I may not have a lot of posts, but I have been searching and reading the boards for a while now.

The thing is - I'm almost afraid to post. I've seen the way some of you respond to people that ask questions, and I don't want to piss you guys off and I certainly don't want to get flamed. I honestly have never seen a board where people whine and piss and moan when someone posts a question the way some of you do. I can already hear the reply, "There aren't a whole lot of members and we don't have time to answer the same question over and over blah blah blah....." Hey, I have a simple solution for you - DON'T WASTE YOUR PRECIOUS TIME EVEN READING MY ASSININE, SILLY, RETARDED QUESTIONS. I certainly wouldn't want to veer you off your important daily schedule where every minute is as precious as gold.

-newbie complains of problems

Was I complaining? Oh that must be why you hate replying to newbies. It's because of the voice you hear inside your head. It "whines" when you read newbies' posts. I think that problem lies within you, not me, because I wasn't complaining. I was explaining my situation and simply asking if anyone else had gone through the same thing and asking if they had any advice.

-everyone tells them it's ignition, plugs, wires, cap rotor

I value everyone's advice - which is why I have gone through my entire ignition, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor for a 2nd and even 3rd time.

-newbie says 'no, it's all new'

Yes I have now replaced everything. But did I say I wasn't willing to go back and check again? If that's the advice you all give, then that is what I will do.

-everyone yells at newbie

That's what I'm afraid of.

-newbie finds out that it's ignition based. I would say 9 out of 10 times, there is a wire issue - burned wire, plug end isn't on 100%, bad plug wire straight out of the box.

I checked all the wires. We ohmed all the wires. All of the wires look good. If you tell me to go back and check the wires again, I would probably do that.

Sell Out
Injector Clicking is normal.

Could be fuel pressure.

Could be voltage.

Could be chip.

Could distributor.

Could be ignition module.

Could be fuel pump.

Could be clogged fuel filter.

Could be timing.

Could be crossed plug wires.

That'll give you a place to start.

I love your attitude dude.

I'm done.

What's wrong with my attitude?

You treat me like I'm a moron and you think I'm going to just sit back and say nothing? "Oh la dee da, I'm a "newbie" so I'm not going to say anything when these guys talk to me like I'm a fucking idiot." As much as I want to be "nice" and make "friends", there comes a point when I have to stick up for myself to some degree.

GM TURBO - Thanks for your help. We're working on the truck again tonight so hopefully we can find and fix the problem.

This does sound like ignition, but it's possible it's not. Try unplugging the o2 sensor and pull ECM B fuse for 15 seconds, that'll clear BLM, then take it for a drive with the o2 unplugged. If that works you obviously have a bad 02 sensor. When the sensors go bad they can really mess up drivabilty.

not that i know anything about any of this ...but....

You know those ngk plugs you put in?

well ya think you could get the part no of em and post here.

someone will tell you if they are the correct ones i am sure.

suppose you set a gap on them to something?
