Engine removal DAQ's

Couple of engine removal DAQ's: Am I better off removing the engine first then the trans or the trans first? I have solid mounts so I suspect that the engine will just sit there on its own after the trans is removed. (Or I can easily support it.) Anyway, Monday (tomorrow) should be moving day and the Sy should be apart one way or the other soon after. Although the trans was still shifting hard when when things went south I'm thinking I might as well do the trans while I've got things apart.

Thanks.

Re: Engine removal DAQ's

Yup, I DID know the engine and trans did not come out as a unit. I had forgotten about the lines when I made my post and I've seen where folks could not get to them so I think it will be engine first unless someone chimes in with some other trick.

Thanks.

Re: Engine removal DAQ's

just pulled mine yesterday, engine first is the way to go i think, had intake off and accesories water pump, and manifolds, so just bare block and heads to pull, came out easy

Re: Engine removal DAQ's

Yup, sounds like the way to go, Only thing I'm "worried' about is the bell-housing bolts. Only because I haven't done them on a Sy before. I figure I'm gonna strip the accessories first anyway. Water pump, upper manifold, dist, starter, and so on. I've already had the engine fairly well stripped at times in the past so not concerned about anything else. Except my old friend Murphy. ;)

Re: Engine removal DAQ's

You can pull the engine/tranny together. But you need a engine hoist and have to put the front wheels up on blocks to give you enuff angle to get it out.

Re: Engine removal DAQ's

top bolts go in from top and use a rachet wrench or some type they will come out alright, and the bottom ones use a swivel 9/16 with a couple long extensions, that should get those all done

i don't think it's worth it to pull it together. but i have seen pics of poeple doing it.

Yes, you may be right. I can't edit my posts, so Norm will be pissed if he has in fact done it this way.

I tried twice, on two different T-series, and NFW. The pan hits the diff tube, and the trans hits the tunnel. NO amount of 'tilting' worked for me. Ended up lifting the body off the frame. That did it for me.

Nope, not pissed. I have done it that way( engine/tranny ) together. Obviously with out the tranfer case. Put the front wheels up on blocks 12" high, it changes the angel of engine/tranny going it. Otherwise if youl eave the front tires on the ground the pan will get murdered by the front diff.

Re: Engine removal DAQ's

Now that's the way to do it! Take the whole bloomin' front end off. If I did that truck would prolly never run again, wouldn't live long enough to put it back together. :rotf:

yea..i took it apart a while ago thinking it'd go back together quickly. Boy was i wrong. :rotf: FWIW...it only took me about 2hrs I think to tear the front end off and have the engine/tranny out....so it's def. a hell of a lot faster than trying to get at all though engine/tranny/tc bolts...especially if you don't have a lift/pit.

I pulled them together on a parts Syclone, I remember dropping the front differential down a little and having to disconnect the steering center link. Since the cab was junk and it wasn't overly concerned about reassembly.

On my Syclone I left the tranny in and pulled the motor. The bellhousing bolts are pretty easy with the right tools (long extensions, swivel sockets) compared to some of the vehicle I have done.

Count me in with the "engine only" crowd. I had to take my trans out anyway and did that first, but you can get it out leaving the trans in.

Take the hood off first.

Pull the dissy, the turbo, and the radiator/fan. The rest of the stuff can stay.
(obviously, unhook all the hoses/wires, a/c)

You can do the bellhousing bolts. Count on wrestling with 'em a bit.
Once you get these, go below and get the tc bolts, and the mount bolts.

The whole thing will yank out. The load-leveling things for hoists help tons, and it keeps the chains away from the intake.

The rest is much easer to get apart outside the engine compartment.

A tip - Get a couple boxes of small, ziplock bags, and as you take the brackets/etc off the motor, put the bolts for that assembly in the bag and label it. The few minutes you spend doing this will save you tons of time on re-assembly.

Re: Engine removal DAQ's

The front end comes off really easy. Especially when you don't have any wires in the way
It took less than 20 min. to get the front off!!!

I am thinking of taking mine out together so I can paint the firewall and smoth it out a bit. But then I will also be replacing the front a-arms with the ones with the poly mounts in prep for the budget coilover.

But right now I have an issue with the amount of space I have...

Oh ya, I was actually thinking of a bunch of plastic containers with lids and felt marker. I hope to put most bolts back in the holes they came from but that doesn't always work. That and take pictures.

It would be a very useful thing to take pics of the motor in various stages of disassembly. Specifically, where the brackets go and all the long-bolt, short-bolt kinda locations.
Also, stud locations. Wire and fuel line locations in the back, another good one. Hose routing of different things.

Just throwing out ideas. At some point in the future, having all this information on a stocker is gonna be useful to somebody doing a restore.

Re: Engine removal DAQ's

if your truck is straight and clean, i wouldn't take the front off. i did it once. and somehos i could see i took it off. might be because the truck had damage one time. but it's easy to take the engine out. without the tranny.

Re: Engine removal DAQ's

Photos are in the plans and truck is straight and clean, no plans to pull front end. All good ideas though. Trying to get a front end back on straight is not a fun job. My bro-in-law has a beautiful '50 Pontiac that's had a frame off resto and, although gorgeous, panel alignment is still not perfect. But not sure you make a '50 anything perfect.

The plan is to, hopefully, have the engine out by the end of next week. Truck has to be moved yet and I still work an occasional day. Will post pics as things begin to happen.
