Dead Turbo???

Hi Folks. I recently bought a 93 Ty with 121k on the clock. Semi clean and original. It is not running as it should. When I boot it, it pulls OK, boost guage flys up to 15 and then about about 3,500 it peters out and a large wooshing noise comes from under hood. Also a smell similar to radiator water but not quite as strong.

Took it to local "performance" shop. He reckons it is a blown/dead turbo. I can get the turbo rebuilt for about $400 so happy to do it if it will fix it. However, not totally sure. My brother (who loves Fords) suggested it may also be a clogged Cat Converter.

Any ideas? I am located in SoCal, so if there is a particular shop that you know of that would be great as well.

Tips greatly appreciated.

Re: Dead Turbo???

It could be over boosting ( non stock exhaust; diff muff., no cat. ?) The stock chip will shut it down if you hit over 14.5 lbs boost.

Don't use the stock boost gauge. You will need an aftermarket one to be accurate. The stock ones are junk.

Re: Dead Turbo???

It could be a that one of the hose clamps isn't tighten enough and leaks out once it gets to high boost.

If you got the $$$$$ and ur lazy,,,,,,RPM is the way to go. He made magic when I took my Ty to him, as many here would say RPM is one of the best things to ever happen to syty's

Re: Dead Turbo???

I will try this. From reading sounds like I have an intake leak of some kind. Will follow the checklist and see how I go. Appreciate the reply.

x2.

The smell is the hot leaking air from the hoses.

15psi is about where is is leaking. Tighten all hose clamps and repost.

Re: Dead Turbo???

If it has the stock plastic intake crossover tube do not tighten the hose clamps beyond loose. Better yet, take them off.

That has nothing to do with his issue. The problem is on the other side of the turbo. Check all your connections, how much play is on the turbo, take off the suction side tube and look into the turbo housing, see if there is any shaft play (side to side and in and out). If the turbo is original is probably due for a rebuild. As for the $400 price, that's not out of line for a over the counter customer, but if you plan on doing any upgrades, you might as well start now since your going to be pulling the turbo out. There's a few vendors on the forumn, check with them for prices and more help on what your future plans/goals are.
