Body shop questions?

I need to get my sy to the body shop. What are the questions I should be asking before I commit to a body shop? I need my new bumper cover painted and installed. I need them to check out the chassis measurements. I also need my fenders aligned. It's been bothering me for a while.
Are there syty specific measurements the body shop would need?

Re: Body shop questions?

Ask the shop what their guarantee is. A high quality shop that uses the best materials will have a lifetime guarantee. Are you painting the bumper body color or the original cladding black? Ask the shop what they will do to match the color either way. Will they use an adhesion promoter on the cover. How well will they sand the bumper cover prior to any application of paint material. (It needs to be fully sanded with no shiny spots or existing "color" showing thru.

As far as chassis measurements. A shop with a good frame machine will have a book of specs for the frame. A shop with a Genesis system will be able to give you a printout of before and after measurements. Do you think the front end was previously hit? They should measure frame rail height and length. This will tell you many things such as mash, sway, diamond. A rail could be kicked up or pushed down, swayed or pushed back. Any of these will cause mis-alignment of the front sheetmetal. If the truck has aftermarket fenders, they are known for poor fitment. The mount holes may need to be elongated to be able to move the fender enough for proper alignment.

If they do need to pull the frame, get a front end alignment after they are done.

Re: Body shop questions?

The truck was painted before I bought it. Back in 04 when I was changing the engine I got under the bumper and noticed that the truck was indeed hit. The drivers side part of the chassis were the front bumper attaches has a crappy weld. Worse than the factory one. It appears to be a minor bump but It's been bothering me.

Re: Body shop questions?

you can ask all the questions you want and people can say anything. Take a look at some of the work they do. Dont look at something that is just done try and see how it looks 3-4 months down the road. time will tell you alot. Quality of the products they use and how there work holds up (sanding scratches shrink up paint peeling if paint still have same shine. good luck and be picky alot of hacks out there.

Little actual body shop experience but things like references (mentioned) and how much custom work have they done. It would be nice if they and refer you some black jobs for you to see. I can recommend a painter up in Lake County but you'll have to get in line.
