But you do know what the 4L70E is, right?
Its another gussied up version of the 700R4. Its the most current derivative, newer and slightly stronger than the 4L65E.
And the .67 overdrive on the 6L80E isn't all that bad. Especially when you combine it with the 4.02 1st gear ratio. Its got alot of gear in first, which means you don't need the gear in the rear axle. Meaning 3.08's coupled with the 6L80E (4.02 ratio which means a combined ratio of 12.38:1) is probably about the same as running 4.11's with the 4L60E (4.11 x 3.059 = 12.57:1 overall). Just a matter of mixing and matching parts and pieces to come up with the best combination (and making sure the tcase & driveshafts can take the beating).

the 4L70E is a TH350 with overdrive, just like the 4L80E is a TH400 with overdrive.

Everything I read when it first came out over a year ago said it was based off the TH350 and that some parts from the TH350 were interchangable. Gear ratio information wasnt even available at the time and being that I didnt even consider it an option I recently havent bothered to look into it. Obviously thats not the case and old news is not good news, oh well. GM would be to stupid to do something like that anyway I guess, I should have known better.

GM changed the material in the output shaft and called it a 4L70E. I think it is a marketing thing since they are blowing up so many 4L65E's in the 6.0 liters.

Depends upon what your idea of "based loosely" is.....
They're both hydraulically operated planetary transmissions made by General Motors. Beyond that, I'm not sure how similar they are. The TH350 certainly is a stouter piece of hardware.
For reference, the TH350 gear ratios are 2.52:1 1st, 1.52:1 2nd, and 1:1 3rd.
