60-0 Braking ABS VS ABS Delete

Just got through today installing the lines to delete my Abs today...WOW what a diffrence!!

Here is the background: Syclone Stock suspension, rear sway bar added,Stock Front Brakes, Hawk performance sport pads, Stock wheels with Goodyear eagle HP's Stock size, Manual S-10 cylinders in the rear drums, with 2 "long shoes" in each side. Full tank of gas and with a spare tire, no passenger. The only change was the tranny. From a 700r4 to a 4l80E. A gain of weight of 75 lbs est.

Both tests were done with a Tazzo performance meter. 60 mph - zero. At night on the same road with the temp in the mid to low 70's. 5 stops done back to back to back, etc.

With ABS was done in the spring. AVG 160.3 FT, Best 152.3 ft(3rd of 5), worst 169.8(last)

Feel from the Drivers Seat: The truck felt like it was hoping as the abs modulated with the back end kicking out to the left everytime. Did not give me a very confidant "feel". I don't know if this a result of the larger rear cylinders or not?

ABS Delete done sunday night. AVG 145.7, Best 142.8 ft (4th of 5) worst 149.0 (last)

Feel from the drivers Seat: I used threshold braking technique to get these results. The truck would pull a little to left every time and tended to lock up all 4 wheels at 10 mph to zero. I never could get it to not do this. But the rear end stayed in line with the front. The "feel" was much improved and 100% smoother.

On a side note earlier while "practicing" threshold bracking I did a 4 wheel lock up from 60-0 it was still only 162 ft. It was a little hair raising. But with very little practice I was able to master the techinque.

I have to say I was more than pleased with this mod and can highly recommend it. In the coming months I am planning on adding LS1 F-body front discs and rear discs. Data will be forth coming.

OK, Sounds like we can add this mod to my truck also. I am all about saving a little weight and cleaning up the engine compartment. Wow, you actually drove the truck. I thought it was just going to set in the garage.

our ancient ABS blows.
Just another good reason to ditch it.

I can't wait to delete mine and bash the F out of it with a sledge hammer.
Thanx for taking the time to take measurements, tho.

Did you do this testing with a G-tech? I should test my 12" Bear with ABS delete, it would be interesting to know the numbers and good practice for an emergency.

No it was a repo(partial payment on a rental building LS1 motorsports could not pay for) Tazzo.

The stock ABS does suck, but it sucks even worse w/o ABS and the Baer disc brake conversion. The rears lock up prematurely causing the rear to come out.

My opinion is for a street driven Sy/Ty DO NOT delete the ABS w/ rear disc brake conversions unless you want to venture into the world of brake bias adjustment trial and error.

Speaking from personal experience on both track and street.

I'm iffy about ABS delete for the lock ups. I've had a truck without ABS. And I must say when your to the point where you're not thinking about anything but not hitting that car infront of you, your not going to remember to feather the pedal and not lock up the tires. Which is why I think I'll be sticking with the ABS for a while, until it as least goes out on its own.

Test this on a water track and I'd like to see the difference.

Some vehicles stop faster in a lock up situation. ABS is mainly to maintain control of the vehicle. A lock up situation could be tested if you don't mind flat spotting some tires.

Even the panic lockup wasn't much different than the ABS.

Bottom line is that ABS was created to modulate the brakes so one could turn while panic braking. Overall a car may stop quicker w/o it but the idea is to brake and still be able to swerve around the obstacle as opposed to just hitting it not as hard.

That being said my ABS was removed when I bought it but if it hadn't been I would have pulled it myself. Just personal preference I guess.

Well I second whom ever said that the ABS sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never turn while i am braking.
When I bought my ty 7 years ago. the second day I owned it. This pedestrian ran out in front of me. I nailed him hard! 30 mph or so. He whent flying. Flight for life ambulance the whole 9 yards. I thought that the abs sucked then.I needed that extra 20 feet gained without the ABS. I new that i could have stopped faster with out it. Well Its been 7 years now my truck is starting to get fast. Now that I have been tunning it. My normal run area isnt long enough. last night I slid up on the side walk into this guys grass a few feet. these brakes suck!!!!!!!!nothing i could do. I had the lights off before i hit the side walk. I would have never done that if I had deleted the brakes those extra 20' are a big deal. I am going to delete that mofo fo sho. I havent done anything like that since i was a kid. Pissed me off more at my self than anything. I saw all that hard work, money and parts going up in smoke. thank god everything was fine. nicked the A2A and the sway bar mount. no biggie I vote for delete.

Properly functioning ABS (emphasis on the properly) will stop quicker -especially- in the wet but you gotta slam the brakes hard and hold them there for it to do its job. If it fails the system usually reverts to as if it wasn’t there. My ABS light is on, haven’t checked as to why. Prolly just do the ABS delete thing anyway since I virtually never drive in the wet anyway and know how to modulate the brakes myself.

That is the key properly functioning. GM never did get the ABS properly tuned for our trucks. Plus most of us SyTyers modify and or improve the brake sysytem on our trucks making the ABS performance worse.

I am all for ABS and would not/ did not take mine off until it started to give a abs warning light, but I was more than surprised about the gain in braking. Now I would recommend it to every one with ABS on their trucks, warning light or not.
