Z06 Brake Upgrade Complete

Finally got the Z06 brake upgrade done, replacing my Baer C4 Sport brake kit. Bigger pistons, larger rotor sweep area, stiffer caliper (high pressure cast) than both the C4 and F Body caliper, and larger rotor means better braking and less fade.

Parts used are CBR C5 brake upgrade kit
Baer Eradispeed 2 piece C5 1.25" rotor w/ aluminum hat

My original plan was to go with the Baer 6 piston monoblock brake kit, but it won't clear 17" wheels, requiring at least 18's and my SSR Comp H rims are 17's, so the C5 brake kit was the logical choice. The Alcon B type 4 piston calipers are not offered by Baer any longer and they would have been my second choice if they were still available.

Your ride must be pretty close to the handeling and stopping of a Z06 now. How much do you have in your suspension and brakes minus mistakes?

i was thinking about getting into this also..
price range for the parts?

Re: Z06 Brake Upgrade Complete

so besides the 1 in in rotor diameter the z06 calipers are better then fbody? can you expand more on that , cause im going to put the fbody front brakes on my ty

Pound for pound the truck should be right on par with a pre C6 Z06 w/ same driver, except the truck will do lap times with a very different personality. Mechanical grip is excellent, however the downside is obviously aerodynamics. I've beaten and been beaten on the track by Z06 vettes.

I've got a lot of money "invested" into the truck, however I've refined the beast over the years. I've owned the Sy since 1997.

Not only the diameter, but the thickness compared to my Baer C4 Sport brakes is larger. The thickness is 1.25" versus 1.10 for the Baer C4 kit I removed. The cooling vanes are larger. The Eradispeed rotor technology is better at removing heat and resisting cracks. The two piece rotor design is lighter. The caliper is a high pressure casting which results in a more rigid caliper. Less deflection means more pad in contact w/ the rotor surface. The pistons are bigger than the C4 Baer calipers. The pads are larger and sweep a greater area of the disc than the C4 kit.

I can't comment on the F Body calipers, other than I know they are not as rigid as the C5 caliper, but apparently the do have larger pistons. I've been told by reliable sources the C5 caliper is a higher performance caliper than the F Body, despite the smaller pistons.

You obviously know what your talking about here. I know why people are shying away from cross drilled rotors (easier to crack), but why didn't you opt for slotted rotors?

You can blame Baer for that mess up. I ordered slotted, but they accidentally sent me plain. I didn't want to wait 2-3 weeks for the right rotors. The only down side is the potential for pad "out gassing" and that can be practically eliminated with the right set of pads.

I had plain rotors on my previous Baer 12" Sport kit w/ stock pads and never experienced out gassing.

adam,

You've done some amazing modifications to your sy.. do you have any video of it running circles around others at the track for us to enjoy?

I'm going to be purchasing a helmet cam soon so I can share the ride!

Re: Z06 Brake Upgrade Complete

I still need to do a couple more things before everything is "ideal" for the track.

Working on an adjustable sway bar for the rear.

Developing a chrome moly frame x brace design that will do a few things:

- Add more torsional stiffness to the center section of the frame
- Built in transmission mount
- Built in front propshaft loop and rear driveshaft loop
- Hopefully maintain or even loose weight over the stock stamped steel tranny brace and Phil Chivers loop combined.

I know this is an old post but "ivanko" could you maybe post all your mods? maybe in your sig or soemthing. I really would like to see a list of everything you have done total to your truck, as I plan on also doing a lot of suspension work on my truck (although its a ty). If you could that would be great!

Here's what I have for now. It's a little out of date and I will update it when I find time.
