wont shift out of park

When i go to shift the truck out of park the selector freely flies up and down when the button is pushed. I check the cable to the tranny and it is still connected so i imagine it is something under the middle console with the selector mechanism. Anybody have a good picture or diagram of what it should look like under there. Or any other thoughts on what it could be.

If this spring came off , fell off or whatever.... it would cause what your describing.

If its not going into gear then chances are your shifter cable broke. If its connected at the trans then its probably broken at the shifter. Ive broken 2 of them in the last 2 years. I had a post on here a few months ago on how to get one cheap $40. Search for P.O.S shifter cables.

a ground problem caused one of mine to break recently...yours sounds like its broken....for the heck of it, i would double check your grounds when you replace....

body to frame to engine ect...cable could be acting as a frame/engine to body ground....i've also had a steel end cap pull itself out of where it crimps onto the cable....can't really repair a shifter cable....after I replaced that one, the new cable was much easier to shift through the gears....the rubber boot on the second one i replaced had torn, probably letting the weather get to it, seizing it up over time....i've had bad luck with shifter cables but it was always for a reason....

The biggest problem I have seen when these damn things break is that the sleeve comes out and the cable gets all twisted up or Ive even seen the cable even gets cut by the sleeve.,
