Winter Tires

OK I have some late 80's S-10 4X4 rims on the way and I was deciding what tires to go with. The search resulted in nearly all for information for stock size rims / tires. Way too fat IMO for snow. So now the question is SUV/Truck tires or winter tires (non-studded)? I have had good luck with th BFG Radial All Terain but, now I am leaning towards the winter tire. Any opinions will help. TIA

Re: Winter Tires

Any dedicated snow tire will perform better than an all-season. I've run Blizzaks before with good luck.

Re: Winter Tires

Just ordered WinterForce tires made by Firestone from Tire Rack for only $57 each. Great price.

Re: Winter Tires

They had the Blizzaks in the same size (not SyTy size) for $99 each. Not bad but, I really needed to find tires on the cheap as I also bought a set of S-10 rims for the new winter tires. The Blizzaks for SyTy's I think were $160 ea. if memory serves correct.

Re: Winter Tires

My winter tires are 4 2-ton craftsman jack stands.
They do just fine from Nov - about April.

Nokian Tires. I have a friend of mine who used to autocross, his father (now deceased) worked for BFG and was given free Blizzaks, he tested them out but prefered the Nokia(n) tires. He felt the Blizzak once worn past the soft ice grippers (that wore out quickly in 2-3K miles) were a below average snow tire. I have used Nokia(n) tires myself and they work great (better than the other two set of snow tires) I had a set on Toyota Supra (it was an older one, but I had it running high 14's so don't laugh) With the snow tire it came with and dusting of snow, it could still break the tire free in 3rd at WOT. With the Nokians it actually hooked in 2nd gear. I have recommended them to friends and I have gotten them hooked. My friend with a modified GTP was also amazed at how it hook up consider the snow. The Sweedish know how to make a snow tire. IMO a Typhoon would be animal in the snow with some Nokian's

Re: Winter Tires

BTW I wouldn't do studded tires unless their was snow/ice on the ground a good portion of the time, my wife had studded snow on her car and they make a lot of noise.

Re: Winter Tires

I Use Blizzak Ws-50 225-60-16 And I Love Them Only Speed Rated 2 99 And On Dry Pavement They Wear Pretty Good But When The Snow Hit's They Are All You Need.

The Traction Is Great As Long As You Are Driving Under Power - If You Are Driving In Od You Will Not Be Driving The Front Wheels The Key Is A Set Of Blizzaks And Driving Your Truck Manual To Keep The Power 2 All 4 Wheels - If You Are Driving Slow And You Are In A High Gear The Front Will Wash Out If You Are Not Driving All 4 Wheels. Dr. I Have Had My Truck Out In 2 Blizzards Already And The Truck Is Awsome In The Snow With My Setup

Hope This Helps

I told my wife that it's the sound of safety

I felt like in the dry they increased the braking distances in panic stops as well. We often take my wife cars on 200 mile highways trips, so maybe that has something to do with the noise complaints, it wasn't that bad around town.

Re: Winter Tires

Yeah on the highway they howl at 75 or so but any good winter tire is going to do that ? all that matters is how they hook up in the snow ?

that is why you have a radio

Re: Winter Tires

I think the way to go is with a Kumho ecsta-asx !! there rating across the board is 8.3 out of 10! ! the tire rack has them for about 80 bucks! I have a set on my Ty for the money what a GREAT TIRE!! Nice & quiet/GREAT traction in rain and snow!!! and they are high performance all season!!!
