Re: Winter buil ideas

Is your truck all stock now? You will have to modify the lower intake and heads in order to use the vortecs. Youre also going to have to tune it. Code59/Turbotweak

Re: Winter buil ideas

IMHO you'll need a cam Steve Morris or I'm acquainted with a guy at Comp. Porting? Yes, but ya gotta find someone who really knows what they're doing. Not a DIY job. 3" down pipe and exhaust for sure. There's a hundred and one things to do to the block while it's out. Oh ya, bigger injectors. The stockers will not keep up.

Are you planing on keeping it smog legal?

You'll probably need a torque converter and should probably think of a built trans if you're gonna even think of racing.

Vorteq heads will help, no doubt, but, yes, the lower intake will have to be modified. For your goals, I'm not sure about porting. At least "gasket match" the ports so the lower intake and the heads match up. L35 heads are also an improvement and a direct bolt-in. 50 or 60/65# injectors will be fine. You will also need Ostrich and Code59, or some other way to tune. The stock chip won't work anymore. If you have E85 available, forget meth. 65# injectors will be large enough for your goals with E85. With the 20G pushing the air into the engine, you won't need, or want, a radical cam with lots of overlap. But you do need a cam with more lift, and then need beehive springs on the heads. A lot of people run 20g's with stock TC's. You can preemptively build up the transmission, or wait and see...
The heads, and even the cam, can theoretically be done without pulling the engine, However, when you have the heads off, it is only a few more bolts to pull it, so why not? You can buy an engine hoist and an engine stand from Harbor Freight on sale for cheap. Now that the engine's out, where do you stop? You are on a slippery slope, so have a plan and a budget and stick to it. There is always more you can do, but you have to stop somewhere.

Re: Winter buil ideas

Well my hole plan was not pulling the engine because I won't wanna put it back in with stock rods and stock Pistons ect so I was planning on leaving in the truck and at berry least doing the heads intake and turbo injectors and pump and a tune

Re: Winter buil ideas

If you want to keep it simple, just do the 20G, E85, fuel pump, and the Tune. That will give you a lot of bang for the buck and you will have a lot of fun tuning it. Save the heads, cam, and transmission work for "stage 2", unless something breaks.
I understand not wanting to pull the engine. I had a plan even simpler than yours. I just wanted to fix some oil leaks. Next thing I knew, I had the heads off, then the engine was out, then new rods, pistons, cam, etc., etc..... Slippery Slope.
You might consider to just keep it simple for awhile.

Re: Winter buil ideas

oh, I forgot the injectors. They're pretty easy too, and you will need them with the E85.

Re: Winter buil ideas

The only thing is that there is only a hand full of stations that have e85 around here and I also know the mix can be off sometimes

Re: Winter buil ideas

Also I know you gotta drill the vortec heads but what do you have to do the the intake? Is it a different degree or something?

Red,
Is that crank horse power or to the ground? Just like Peter said above once you get started where do you stop. If you have the skills and a few hand tools you can do allot of upgrades on a budget. I would do the simple things and make sure the truck has plenty of fuel and a good tune before I tore into it. PM me your number and I will give my thoughts on a solid build.
Thanks,
Bob

The intake ports on the heads are higher. Typically 3/8" of aluminum is welded to the lower intake and then machined. You can find already modded ones or you can send it out to be modded
