Why dealerships suck

So my front diff has started leaking and I have about a billion other things to do/on my mind. So I figure I might as well take it to a dealership and pay them to fix the leak, the rest of the issues on my ride can be fixed whenever I get around to it. Well after a weekend of sitting in their service department they call me today saying they got it up on the lift and decided they don't want to work on it due to "extensive modifications" done to the vechicle. He also said being as it was so old they didn't feel "comfortable" working on it.

Well my extensive mods include nothing more than rear mounted cooler on the undercarriage, nothing else has been changed. I kind of argued saying that is was simply a front diff out of an s10 and it shouldn't make any difference. Bu then in the back of my head all these horror stories about dealerships started coming back I and I said no problem I will pick it up tomorrow, free of charge of course. I figured if it takes that much prodding to get them to work on it in the first place just imagine what they might do to it in the long run.

So i guess my baby gets put up in the garage and I discover the joys of a front diff. better me mess it up than them anyways, just wish there was more hours in a day.

My dealership trips are rare even for the Z-71 but I have no problem taking my Syclone to my mech... He's a GM man and really doesn't like to work on anything else. He's never messed up the Sy to this day and its seen him for stuff like that. Good luck Don and are you still going to AR.?

why drive when you can fly, I'll fly up there and we can cruise around the lake or something. can never have to many cross country's. After I get the Sy lined out (if) I'll come up and we'll give em what for. I never could turn down free food.

heh, i guess you should be happy they said they didnt feel comfortable working on it rather than screwing it up.

best thing to do is just find a high quality shop that'll work on it.

Trip to the "stealership" eh? It has "extensive modifications" they say? Reminds me of a story told by Gary S. in FL awhile back... Took his syclone in for some sort or warranty repair (he bought it new) and they informed him that his warranty was now void. Due to him installing a turbocharger on it of all things :roll: . How's about dem apples :lol: ?

Prolly work out for you in the long run. If they do it right or wrong, it would still cost you an arm and a leg for the repair. Case and point, one of my coworkers found out today that the fuel pump in his 96 four banger S10 is going out. Stealership quoted him a price of $500 plus for a new pump (new pump is $400 alone and prolly the entire fuel sending unit) and the labor it install it . Told him that I will do it for the price of a new transmission mount from Summit.

Damn thats high! Had to put a new fuel pump (sending unit combo) in my 2K Z-71 about 2 months ago and it cost $475 installed... Delco pump too. Glad I didn't take it to the dealer. My personal mech put it in. I have noticed living here and most of you guys living in other places in the country, you all just get screwed on $$$!!!

You're much better off they refused to work on it. Did you take it to those f*cktards at the GMC/Subaru stealership in Lewisville?? It took those morons 3 times to do a proper alignment on my Subaru. :evil:

I guarantee a few of the service dudes would have joyridden the sh*t out of your truck had you let them work on it. :fist:

Can't say I've ever had a problem with my GM dealer. I also was smart enough to buy the best extended warranty too. When my fuel pump went out it cost me $50 and when the new failed, another new one was put in for free, of course I did not list everything that the dealer has done for my truck, but they have been very good to me. How I wished though that I had still had it when my CPI and Cat went out.

Of course I am considering dropping another 2k to pick one up again. Get my code 43, oil pressure sending unit, oil gauge, oil and tranny leak fixed and I'm sure I could burn my window motors out by then, a rental car... and still have it covered for another 2 years, tranny could go by then.

Not to worried about joyridding, having some chip issues and it barely runs, scared them by saying it's a new chip and not dialed in and any WOT and it will probably blow the motor. Guy seeemed pretty nervous about that. But all I wanted was for them to stop he leak so I can do the rest. Oh well, like everyone has said, it's better to do it yourself. 112 is going up on jsckstands today and I'll just drive the rental till I get ALL the little bugs worked out.

As for moving to Arkansas, hell no, where did you get that idea. I mean don't get me wrong, I hate Texas with a passion but not going back to Arkansas unless to visit family. As soon as I can I plan on moving to Seattle and do my flying up there, this is of course after I complete my stuff here :-? I like IFR flying.

Man, $500 for a fuel pump install? I just put one on my 1/2-ton GMC last night. $50 in parts and about 6 hours time. Yet another reason to avoid the stealerships.

The guy I bought my old Ty from spent $1100 for a fuel pump and sending unit for his Ty at the GMC Dealership.

my pick up is definatly easier...i put a Walbo in my 95 x-cab s-10 in 1 1/2 hours (pulling the bed off) pump was 110 bucks...luckly the senders assm.was ok...
im sure the Ty wont be soo easy....its next.

Ty fuel pumps aren't that bad, the first one I tried it was but when you do it with someone who knows what they are doing it goes pretty smooth.

Got my Sy back from the dealer today, no worse for the wear. Just had another .2 of a mile on it, so I know they didn't mess with it. Come to find out their list of "extensive mods" was the PTE downpipe and ATR exhaust, along with tranny coolers under the bed. All of which had nothing to do with the front diff leaking, I put a good argument to the manager and he said he would have his guys work on it if I insisted, but I told him no. Told him a guy shouldn't have to persuade any dealer to work on a vechicle, kind of like making a girl date you when she doesn't want to, it will never work out. Told him I couldn't believe that fixing a leaking diff was beyond his guys capabilities. But I think Patrick was right, he assumed that they had more money making things going on like warranty work and didn't want my truck taking up lift space. Lesson learned for all, never take it to a dealer, maybe a trusted friend/mechanic but never a dealer.

I got to start adding it up and I will save myself money in the end anyway cause what I am paying for a rental is less than what I would be paying for labor and over inflated parts prices. and at least I know if I do it then it won't be half ass, might not be perfect but won't be half ass either.
