Hi all,

I'm gonna get an external for xmas. Just want to know why almost everybody is going with the 40mm instead of the 35mm???

Thanx

I got a 40mm sitting right here in the box, wish I had it on the truck to tell ya how it works.

IMO, 35mm is a little too small for us.

I just installed the 40mm and love it so far. Unfortunately, I didn't get it in time to make it to the track this year and now the snow is flying. I can say that boost on Datamaster looks great at 17psi - that's the point it used to start fluctuating with the integral gate.

I have a Tial 35MM and it seems to do just fine with the stock turbo.

I'm planning on keeping the stock turbo and no exhaust/cat, getting an ultimate and cranking the boost a bit. Can a 35mm hold this???

it all depends on how much boost you want to run.
if you want to run less boost (make the external work harder) you will need a bigger one.

if you want to run on stock turbo 16+ then you are fine.

I didnt think about that fact before, makes sence. If your wanting to run lower boost numbers that means your wastegate has to flow more exhaust away from the turbo. hence bigger is better to keep boost levels low

That's exactly what I wanted to hear. In another post this statement was brought up, but nobody kept on dicsusing it. Since no one here is going to run less than 15PSI perhaps the 35mm may be a good choice for a stock turbo truck. Am I wrong???

yeah, 35 will do.
just dont try to pull 10psi with it. you will have issues.
you can use a 35 on the 50 series turbo's.
just run more boost so the wastegate is not maxed out.

hth and good luck

... but when you run more boost, you are pushing more air through the motor, and then creating more exhaust... so are you really working it harder at LOW boost ?

... and, doesn't the size of your exhaust housing come into play here, as it is a real restriction in the exhaust, and it will directly affect the turbo speed, affecting the boost level??

35mm, I'd run until 400-450hp level, if you have a well setup truck - good sized turbo, base boost is close to the boost level you are running

40mm, I'd run at 500-700hp

past that, dual wastegates, or LARGE, HKS GT style etc.

you're right green, that is a great assessment.
the 52 will run about 450 with tunning right?

On a stock motor? Depends heavily on supporting mods & tuning.

I'll measure the wastegate oriface on a PTE exhaust housing for comparison.
