What to expect from a smaler turbine wheel?

This one goes out to all the turbo tweaking gurus out there.
Ever since the GT35R GP from Eric i knew that i wanted a
Ball Bearing turbo like this when time would come.
Now i run accross a "hybrid" that sounds promissing and i
was wondering what the pros/cons would be compared
to a GT35.

The thing is called GT3040R and is described as followed:

Dual Ball Bearing "GT30/GT40R" Turbo assembly. T3 style inlet flange with 4 bolt T31
style exit. This turbo incorporates the same exact GT40 compressor wheel found in the
popular GT35/40R, but runs the smaller 60mm w/84 trim turbine wheel from the GT30R.
Appropriate for smaller engine where the GT35/40R feels too big, but the high amount of
compressor flow is needed for the desired HP and boost levels. Large T04S style
compressor housing with 4.00 inlet and 2.50" outlet. This turbo has a flow capacity of
about 600HP.

Turbine
-Wheel: 60mm w/ 84 trim
-Housing: .63 ar, .82 ar, 1.06 ar

Compressor
-Wheel: 82mm w/ 56 trim
-Housing: .70 ar

What can i expect from a smaler turbine wheel (60mm vs 66mm) on a built
engine with vortecs?
Even faster spoolup?
Top end suffering?
What stall speed would u guys recommend for this application? Stock? 2400? 2600?

I'm all about quick response. Need to get out of the rabbit hole when a WRX or Evo
shows up...

i can't answer any of your questions but can you explain your signature picture it looks like you typhoon is wedged between 2 buildings, just curious how that happend or is it photoshopped?

Hey Ted,

Sure i can explain that, grin.
That picture was taken during one of our wrenching sessions at a friends house.
He has two small garage buildings that are not high enough to mount a car lift
inside, so he simply placed the used lift he had bought outside between the two buildings.
California Style....unfortunately the sun not always shines in Switzerland though :-/
The other picture is photoshoped....the girl you see
"blowing" my truck is Kitty Fox ;-) I took this one to show of my fender air inlet, the
nice line up of my bumper towards the fender cladding and of course the grill without
lettering. The GMC letters were cut out of the grill and the rods were connected by plastic
welding a few rods of a used Opel grill. Hey its still GM plastic!

I would think it would spool up a little faster. How much faster though :dunno:

Ontop of that, I'd try it with the stock stall, see what you can do. Then report back. If it doesnt get alot of boost at the line step up to a 2800. I mean even if your not fixing the problem 100% at least you can sale it and get your money back and buy a higher stall.

i used a stock stall TC with vortecs and stock turbo..
That thing spooled like a beast
i now have a PT61 turbokit with a 3K stall TC, it's just a little laggy, compared to my old setup..
go buy yourself that gt35-r turbokit, it's a BB turbo, spools up verry fast, and i doubt you will see a big difference in spoolup with a larger compressor wheel.

Good thoughts, that's were I come from. Like i wrote in the initial post I've loved the
GT35R's from E-Rue's group sale and from what i hear a 2600 stall would be best to run
them. They also make good top end power so i figured to build a little traffic light rocket it
would be enough to go with a GT30/40R because I was offered one for 900 bucks brand new.
I have the complete ATR setup (3" downpipe with ext ATR 44mm waste gate, big 920cfm
ATR turbo and a 9/11 TC with a 3000 stall) My thought was to sell this stuff together
with the matching STG chip and #50 injectors as a kit and go back to my OEM TC,
GT30/40R and the RPM downpipe that is just a dream to install.

maxing out a turbo
From a guy at a honda turbo forum i know that the GT30/40R can easily be maxed out
at higher RPM around 8000 on a smaler V6 engine like a 3,5 liter. Does anybody know
what the relation would be in our application? Does lower RPM like on our 4.3 mean less
exhaust flow = no maxing out @ 5500 RPM on a SyTy or is redline on a rice burner =
redline on our trucks?

what money are you willing to let it go for?
intrested in the TC..
i would't worry about maxing out that turbo. prolly ain't planning to run 25PSI or more, and 8k rpm??

i don't know but i would suspect less turbo lag, due to a smaller wheel?
