What modification set you back?

Mine have been the following:

Air to air intercooler: Requires me to relocate battery.

Air to air intercooler: Requires hacked up fender wells or not running them

Battery Relocate: Re-wiring battery cables

Buying CTS-V brake calipers: Coming to the realization that after almost a year it ain't gonna happen because I have no way to put the rears on to match.

Buying Vortec heads: Have to get intake modified to fit.

Buying Vortec heads: Makes me realize I want a fresh block to attach them to.

Buying a stand alone system: Not being able to put it on the truck because I don't have time, then seeing something way cooler after spending 2400 on it.

Buying Stainless steel/Aluminum parts: Makes me want to go through the whole truck replacing ugly steel parts.

I'm sure some other members trump me but all in all I'm staying positive and I'll have a good truck one day. I just know it isn't going to happen overnight. I could have just left it alone, but who wants that?:D

Re: What modification set you back?

I installed one of those aluminum radiator supports a few years ago . Nothing had provisions to install a thing and the hood latch bracket eventually broke resulting in a broken windshield . My enthusiasm to get it 100% again has been meh ... Now I live vicariously through all of you :)

Re: What modification set you back?

I blew a head gasket and decided to upgrade to Vortec heads. Then after a few years of not buying Vortec heads or having my intake modified, I decided to have my L35s rebuilt and put them back on with Cometic head gaskets. Then after a couple more years, I finished putting everything back together to find out that all of my fuel lines had rotted. I replaced all of my fuel lines, and pulled it into the garage for the winter, with just a misfire left to diagnose. I went out to pull the Ty out of the garage so I could work on my BMW, and the Ty had low fuel pressure again, and wouldn't start.
So in the end, the only "modification" that I did was Cometic head gaskets, and it's been almost 6 years since I started that project.

Oil leaks, and lots of them. Decided easiest way to fix them was to do a frame off.

Code what?
Standalone, finally got the bs3 installed in the Ty and have been driving it daily working on tuning the last few weeks sense my trans went out in my jimmy. Decided it was time to take it to the track friday evening and set a baseline with the tune I've been working on. Drove an hour and a half waited in line to run for 1hr just to get rained out before I could make one pass. 30$ later and a half tank of gas I'm still trying to figure out if its just my luck or just the idiot weather man who only predicted 10% chance of rain.

Would have made for a good night with a low of 36*

Re: What modification set you back?

Buying a "good running, low mileage" Ty sight unseen while deployed to come home and pick it up from the guy with an additional 250 miles on it and a ticking noise in the bottom end of the engine. My new engine is on the stand and hopefully within the next few weeks I'll have it up and running.

Post from 7 years in the future: well, today I washed the Ty, still working on the engine swap and I hope to have it up and running in a few weeks.

In all seriousness building a stockish engine is my biggest investment so for but overall the truck is a money pit.

Re: What modification set you back?

haha..Well, I just joined here and already rebuilt the entire drive-line in my head. So far, after buying my truck and wanting to upgrade to the ZQ8 I ended up finding out I needed a new turbo...which lead me to take the intake and manifold off...which lead to taking a head off to ispect the pistons...and now am looking into a complete rebuild. So, $140 steering upgrade is leading into a multi-thousand dollar one! Atleast I'll have a clean engine bay.
