Thanks for the info. I bought the truck from a guy that said that it was completely built by John Waller and he was pretty pissed that the truck was losing water and didnt have the time to mess with it so he sold it to me for what I though was a pretty good deal. He wasnt 100% sure if it was the headgaskets but he told me that the motor only has about 100 miles since John built it and that John put all the miles on it when he had the truck and the truck was given back to him in this condition. So all I want to do is get the gaskets coming so that I dont have to run around looking for parts when I have my guy tear it apart. So if cometics are the way to go Ill order a set. Different schools of thought here but Cometics & SCE's both are required / recommended to have a very specific RA surface finish for the block and heads both. Some say that it's no big deal / not required and they have had no problem. If the manufacturer says that it should be then I would follow that AND make shure that the head and deck surfaces are actually flat. Also that the proper torque spec's and pattern are used.
Like John said above, even if all other things are right.... excessive detonation will blow gaskets fast. Moderate detonation will do damage that just keeps slowly "eating the gasket". either way it's just a matter of time (fast or slow) once the damage is done.

It stands for "roughness average". Basically, it is a level of surface finish called out for proper sealing.

I've had two motors melt JE pistons before putting a dent in the cometics.... so make sure your tuneup is right otherwise you'll be changing pistons and not headgaskets. Both were using ARP pro series head bolts.

Thanks for the info. All I know is that the guy that I bought the truck from was so pissed off that this John Waller guy gave him the truck in this condition and he thought that it was just a headgasket problem but he is so busy that he didnt have the time to mess with it and that is why he sold it. Ill have a compression check done to make sure that its not a piston before I order anything. Thanks for all the help.ghettosled said:
