What a trip!!

Flew to Harrisburg PA yesterday to check out a Typhoon. To assure my wife it was a good deal, I bought her a flight package and took her too. Planned dinner in Lancaster, Motel, then catch the return flight this AM.

Well, they got hit with one of the worst snow storms in history. The airport shut down Friday evening so we bought the Ty, returned the rental car and planned to park the Ty at my folks place in WV and finish the trip in one of their cars. Never happened.....I-81 was moving at 20 MPH and about midnight, in blinding conditions, I caught the edge of some 14" snow and got sucked into the really deep 2 foot stuff, just beside the barely passable area. State Trooper comes 20 minutes later and calls a wrecker. 1 hour later, an old jalopy arrives and in 3 minutes, we are pulled out to the tune of $100. Next exit, I get fuel and when entering I-81 again, the Ty is pushing snow while I am praying for traction. Never came and so much snow was packed under the front that the front wheels were barely touching. I was 20 feet from getting back on I-81!!! I'm thinking....there goes another Benjamin!! Within 4 minutes, a guy coming down the ramp in a 4x4 whips around me and pulls us onto I-81. After another 2 hours at 25 MPH max, we catch a motel. Today, we get close to Wytheville VA and I am about empty on fuel but they have great prices so we chance it. I made it BUT they were without power sooo the pumps were down. Risked another 9 miles and we made it to another fuel station that had power.

Good news was by this time the roads were cleared and I could ramp up the Ty to 75-80 and I averaged 16.8 MPG out of a highly modded truck that ran like a dream. One of my best deals to date IMO, even with all the drama. Truck is tuned to 547 HP / 622 FPT at 16 pounds of boost and it definately plays the part. Gotta get Jimmy out in it for his thoughts

I'm in NJ and we got hit with 20 inches of snow so I know what you were dealing with! Glad everyone and the new Ty got back safely.

I hate trips that happen that way, but at least you have a good story/memory of the event.

Re: What a trip!!

what color is it...not sure i knew of this truck

Hey Mike, I am bettin you know about this one.....not much gets past you ;). It is a white/grey 92 (0393) that was run in Lap 1. I bought it primarily for the Bowtie block but think I am gonna have all the cladding sprayed white and replace the OZ racing wheels with a set of white powdercoated ZR1's and just have fun with it. I still am amazed how fast and smooth this thing pulls through the gears. It looks like a contraption under the hood but somebody knew what they were doing a whole, whole lot better than me. I'll try to post pics in a few days as it is not very presentable right now after the 912 mile winter saga.

Regards.

Re: What a trip!!

Are you going to add an intercooler, or run it as is?

Not sure. I am tossing around the benefit of an A/A on it but it ran super the whole way home so I am not sure if it is worth tampering with. On the other hand, the air temp was around 30. Around Nashville, air temp rose to 40 and so did my A/F temp by about 5 degrees. Most of the trip it was reading around 62, under boost on the hills it would rise to 75. Under hard boost, it would hit the 90's (the owner said to shut it down if it ever reaches 200 or a piston might melt but it never came close to those temps). If I drove it steady at 75-80 after boosting hard, within a minute or two, it was right back down in the 60's.

The whole set-up defies reason but this thing starts right up without help, idles with a nice rumble and flat out moves!! The exhaust gases burn the cleanest I have ever observed out of a modded forced induction vehicle and with the C5 brakes all the way around, it stops about as fast.

Re: What a trip!!

Shaun that converter seems a bit small, how does it spool?

I never boost launched it because it had been stored in a private collection for 2 years and I had a looong trip home. Once I got within 30 miles of the house, the gloves came off and it is like a slingshot. Still didn't boost launch it, but just nailed it on green. It raises up, snaps out 2nd within a few seconds and just flat out keeps pulling like a quad-jet engine tractor at a pulling event. I was kinda concerned because Jimmy had doubts about the configuration and he knows ALOT. I would lay down $1000 bucks that he has a different view after a stint in it though. It is not a MINT example of a Ty by any stretch of the imagination, but for what I invested in it, I am still in awe and I have honestly never been in a V6 powered vehicle that propels like this Ty.

Congrats. I remember this truck. As you say, it did look like a contraption under the hood..but glad to hear it hauls.

Re: What a trip!!

ah ok...THAT one. The asking price for what was in the thing was pretty good...but it looked about as put together as my truck that hasn't run in 8 yrs. Good luck with it...although i wouldn't be surprised if you just yanked the motor out and put it in a nicer syty. I never saw this truck in person, but even in pics you could tell it had been run pretty hard.

good luck with it!
