this might be a stupid question and i know mostly everyone knows it but me beacause i see it on the threads.. but what are wastegates and minigates, what do they do, where are they intalled.. if i need to get one where can i get them from..?? sorry still new to turbo

A mingate is a type of wastegate produced by Innovative.

A wastegate controls the amount of exhaust going through your compressor turbine. When you reach a certain boost level your wastegate gets a signal (from the computer or a boost controller) to open and let exhaust gasses through to anotther point not allowing it to go through the compressor turbine keeping your boost at constant levels.

wow thanks for the fast reply.. so its kinda like a bov?? if i have a stock setup.. which wastegate do you recommend... and will i have to get anything else like a boost controller?...do you know of some sites that sell it?? thanks

a wastegate is kinda like a bov except it deals with exhaust gasses instead of compressed air.

A would suggest Race Proven Motors to get it. The minigate is the best you can get unless you are going to have a straight out drag truck that runs 10s.

To get one to work you need to purchase and install a sort of boost controller. Electronic is better with controlling boost levels but it is much more expensive...

The wastegate controls how much exhaust gas goes through the turbo to spin it. It keeps the turbo spinning at the proper speed.

A BOV goes between the turbo and the engine's intake. When your turbo is spinning and building boost, and you let off the gas, the throttle body blades slam shut. All the pressurized air has nowhere to go, but back out through the turbo. The BOV has a vacuum line hooked to the engine intake. When there's pressure at the BOV, but vacuum in the engine (like when the throttle slams shut), the BOV opens up and vents that extra pressure out to the atmosphere instead of forcing it back out through the turbo.

A BOV only does anything when there's a pressure difference between the intake (before the engine) and the engine (the intake manifold). And basically the only time that happens is when you let off the gas. It helps more with a manual transmission, where you're on and off the gas a lot to shift. Letting the extra pressure out also means the turbo doesn't get slowed down as much, so it doesn't have to spool back up when you get on the gas. But yeah, a BOV only does anything when you let off the gas.

A popoff valve is similar to a BOV, except that it just opens up at __psi. It's just a spring valve that prevents you from getting over __psi. They still control boost, but you need a wastegate to control how fast the turbo spins, so that it's not out of its efficiency range and making even more heat.

I've had good luck with the MiniGate on the crossover pipe.
I ran 12.80's with a pretty much stock Typhoon.
