Vortec plugs

Hey Al,

We found that the TR6's seemed to foul up too fast when I ran the leaded fuel. Switched to TR5's seems a bit better so far. The 5's are a one step hotter heat range, compareable to the cr42's i'm told.

Vortec Plugs

Vortec Plugs

Tony, Big Al,

What brand R these TR plugs ? I am in the middle of a substantial Vortec buildup also, and am wondering if the stock CRTS-42's R OK ? I've got a bunch of them to use up.

CR42TS will not work, it is not long enough. the TR6 and TR5 is NGK. I have also used several nonprojected tip plugs that seem to work just as good if not better. some done have the resistor so you get more power to the plug tip....

This spring I'm going to try some denso iridium plugs as well. They cross over to the same heat range as the TR5, but they have a projector style tip.

I'll post back with my findings.

if i understand this correctly you guys are saying the stock cr42ts plug should NOT be used with vortec heads, 412 cam, pte60 etc etc build?

Shouldn't, or can't be used with Vortec heads, period.

They require a long reach plug.

The CR42TS equivalent is a R42LTS

The NGK TR5 or TR55 or TR6 are the NGK long reach equivalent of the UR5 or UR6.

The TR series are favorites of the LS1 guys.

Which is this the correct part no for the tr5

TR5GP (3186)

or is it

TR5-1GP (3716)

btw the tr55, if this is the correct no TR55GP (3403) or is it TR551GP (7159)

and what is the difference between the tr5 and the tr55 plug?

i dont think i ever saw mention of the tr55 plug on the board here?

thanks

ya know sombody should put this in the vault because Ive been reading here since this past summer and i might have missed it but this is the 1st time I ever read that the stock plug shouldnt be used in the vortec heads.

and i know i tried to read everything i saw about the vortecs leading up to my rebuild.

good timing on this post.

The machine shop just called and i should get the bottom end back this afternoon and the heads early next week.
Wonder why new vortecs wth only 1k miles on em had loose valve guides. anyway i told em to just change all of em and do a complete valve job on em while they're at it.
