OK, I just thought of soemthing else. Thoese reed style vacum things that you see on race car headers for pulling crank case vacum, would one of thoese work?? I aske because I am just finishing up my new down pipe and exhaust and was wondering if this would work. Just thinking out loud..

I don't think so, bc our exhaust system is under pressure whenever the intake is under boost. it would sorta work anytime in vacume thou.....although thats almost worthless bc I'm never in vacume.

the one thing that i keep coming back to about this electric vac pump is that i recall reading that none of them will last if it has oil vapors coming into it. In the application above oil doesnt enter it because it is plumbed to the air intake of the motor. However our app requires plumbing to the interior of the motor which does have oil vapors.

So here what i keep thinking. THere are so many oil separators that are miniature in size used in spraying applications that have working pressures of 160psi plus. Why not just use one of these electric vac pumps plumbed AFTER an oil separator. this would mean the oil separator becomes the catch can. They all have a clear glass or plastic bowl, allowing for quick visual inspection to tell when its time to be emptied. This sounds so simple in theory. So what am i overlooking?

Just FYI I saw a nice vac pump in the new summit catalog. It is Moroso's new pump, retail is $550 and mounts directly to a chevy head with a billet adjustable bracket p/n MOR-22642

Ed that is exactly how a couple of buick guys I know are running theirs. They are using smog pumps off of newer cobras and putting the seperator in between. They swear by it and I can justify probably $120 before $500 and then have to fab brackets and pullies. I have video of the setups but no pictures I'll try and get some. One guy I know has used this setup for over a year with no problems at all runnin close to 30psi.

That's called a venturi. And yes, it will pull vacuum while the exhaust is pressurized. It depends on the exhaust pressure & flow to create vacuum.

If you look here: http://www.dooley-company.com/vacuum_1.htm
You'll see that they call these vacuum pumps even though they are not much more than a block of metal with a few holes.

I don't know what you're referring to as far as the reed-style race car stuff. But I seem to remember someone putting a nipple on their downpipe. They ran the PCV hose to that instead of the intake. The exhaust flow sucked on the PCV system, the same way those adapters let you drain a waterbed with the flow from your garden hose. It just seems weird to have your exhaust system hooked up to the crankcase like that. =)

it's a very popular way of doing things in the dragster/ top street cars. works really good for them. and ya I know what a venmtuir is. we have lots of them on the airoplane....

I just have a hard time seeing it work in an exhaust system that see's 15-20-25psi of pressure. but I think dave said these things have a check valve in them, that keeps reverse flow from occuring.

so at the least you would have pcv effect when your not in boost

Heres the part# for the ZR1 vacuum pump. 10098474 The GM list price is $233.40 and GM parts direct price is $116.70 (Until the rape you on shipping).

I was looking for some info in the cobra smog pump and came across this thread on corral.net

http://www.corral.net/forums/showth...ef21b6277&threadid=138105&highlight=smog+pump

Lots of good information discussed there. I got an idea also. A lot of 5.0 mustangs have a belt driven smog pump. For those of us the don't have AC, I dont see why you couldnt rig one of those pumps up to work in the AC compressor bracket. Just an idea I may be completely wrong though.

i don't think the downpipe will have that much pressure, if there is enough flow you can work with a venturi.

there is that much pressure. I have a gauge on it.

theres even more in the stock DP. and I have a 3" with a big exhaust housing. the stock housing runs 2x the intake press in the exhaust....

I tried a pump off an LT1 engine, it worked for about 5-6 days. It was just too much on the pump, it's clearly made for pushing air not sucking air.

aerospace vacuum pump

I just finished installing the aerospace kit on my sy. Definatley turned out sweet. i installed it the same time as my new turbonetics t76 turbo. the air conditioning is already gone, so we just put the pump in place of the ac bracket. sooo much cleaner looking under the hood. If anyone is interested i can email/post some pics of the finished product.

4.6L mustangs (96-present) do not have a smog pump because they do not need them to pass emissions like the 5.0s did.
