Re: up graded wheel studs?
I searched for Broken wheel studs and this old thread came up.
I just wanted to say that I recently bought and installed some of the newer Vette style 18x9.5 wheels and used the accompanying lugnuts which were a capped/crowned nut.
My rears used a bolt-on wheel spacer adapter.
The end result was.....3 broken front left studs broken clean nearest the rotor face. And prior I noted that the lugnuts kept loosening even though torqued and I had triple checked hub centric rubbing/obstructions.
They finally just snapped and really gave no hard evidence other than a squaking noise that I could hear when driving next to a tall curb or wall.
The problem was simply that the new wheels have a deeper boss thickness and consume about 1/2" more of the factory OEM stud length.I only really noted this when I used a factory lugnut with the open hole face.
So I bought 10 1'2" longer studs from O'reilly's ( in stock)...for 1.49$ each and swapped them all out in about 2.5 hours with a press.
Could have been a bad corner wreck if I hadn't inspected when I did .
Hope this helps some of you avoid the same fate.
