Turbo not working

So, I bought a Syclone a few months back. It haven't driven it too much but hoped in it yesterday and today. Before it was very, very quick. However, the past few days, the engine has gotten louder and the truck is as slow as a S-10 (I have one of those).

It is like the turbo just doesn't work. I can floor the accelerator and it shifts hard, like normal, but just flat out won't get moving.

The turbo gauge shows right in the middle and will go into the orange to the 5 bar (1/3 of the orange) at very max.

So, I know something is wrong but am wondering if anybody has an idea of what might be going on or have the first thing to look at.

Thanks!

Re: Turbo not working

Exhaust leak? Blown manifold gasket? Cracked exhaust manifold? Y-pipe damage/leak? That would make it louder and slower.

Re: Turbo not working

Maybe check to see if your up pipe/tube has a leak or is off or maybe your wastgate is stuck open

Re: Turbo not working

I have little knowledge compared to almost all on here, and I am sure they will jump in. First thing I would do is pull the airbox, tube and elbow. Check for cracks or a broken off piece. Check the fins of the turbo for damage (hard to see down there but I put my phone down there and took a pic to see). Check the shaft. See if it wiggles at all side to side or front to back. Also could pull the oil feed off the top and test it to make sure its flowing well. That should at least get you started for a few minutes until the guys jump in talking about wastegates and solenoids and all that other fun stuff.

Also, is the turbo stock to your knowledge? If not sure, may wanna snap a pic of it and throw it up.

X2 check your hose clamps on the turbo to intercooler hose and on the intercooler to throttle body hose; you may have a boost leak.

Re: Turbo not working

I had the same thing on mine. The waist gate rod got the valve of because the security clip had been gone.
This will set your WG wide open so no power.

Re: Turbo not working

Unmentioned, and the first thing I would check is the hose from the turbo to the inter-cooler. When these either come off or break you'll have these exact symptoms. All other suggestions are good as well, just this hose may be the easiest to check.

Gook luck and keep us posted.

Re: Turbo not working

Here is a pict of the turbo. I am almost positive it is stock.

Where is the airbox you talk about? Looking at this pick, I'm assuming it is lower right? With a spring clip holding it closed?

Re: Turbo not working

As a PS to this, I opened the twist-off on the intercooler (?) and it didn't have any anti-freeze in it... I am thinking I might be a touch low on coolant. But, I doubt that'd have anything to do with it unless it gets too hot and turns itself off.

Re: Turbo not working

Exhaust in the cab or a hot smell? That's probably the hot air from the turbo leaking from the upper intake somewhere. Had it with mine. Tighten up all the clamps as Don said and keep an eye out for cracked hoses that are leaking.

Re: Turbo not working

That -is- th intercooler and it -does- need to be full if water, with a little antifreeze. The problem is getting the air out of the system when it's low and whether the pump is running. Do a search to hotwire the IC pump and you'll be able to hear it run (with motor off) if it's OK. If it's full and working you'll see some movement in the water at the filler neck. PS: Leave it hotwired when you're done. You want that pump to run all the time with the key on anyway.

Re: Turbo not working

wastegate flap inside the exhaust housing was seized on mine.Easier to check for leaks and bent fins in turbo first.
