tune up

Ijust did a tune up on my sy. But I am still getting kr  I put a new balancer on it and set the timeing to 1* retarded and I'm still getting it.
the list for the tune up includes
ur6ix gapped .o32
talors
conrad cap and rotor
balancer
timing set
93 octane gas
intercooler is working good
new o2 sencer
injectors pulled out an cleaned
new pcvs with the e on the bottom
fuel filter
nothing is rubbing
new trans mount
new motor mounts
new vac lines
no leak in vac lines
fp set to 50 psi
fp rises 1 to 1 with boost
What could it be?I have made an alky injection setup and put it on the truck and it helps until about 65 then the kr goes off the scale. Without the alky I am getting about 3-6* kr
thanks for any help

Re: tune up

How much alky you squirting? In my experience, too much alky will cause truck to mis-fire, which can show up as knock on your scan tool.
Turn down the alky, close up the gaps on the plugs, get more spark to your plugs and/or turn up the FP... You can do one, or a little of all..

Did you get the alky to control a previous knock issue?

Is there a reason why this post is in the lounge?

I just had the same problem which was well documented on another thread. I changed everything iginition wise, checked timing, vaccum leaks, and fuel suystem etc. I had horrible audible knock back by documented diacom data. Found out my problem was the harness which runs from the coil to the back of the distributor. The wires are pink and white and have a connector on either end. They are cheap and definately a problem area and IGINITION RELATED. Try it and keep us posted.

Have you used high octane (race gas, xylene, etc.) to verify that it's not false knock? Though I guess the alky helping somewhat should indicate that it's not false...

I have a diy alky. have a ford pump it puts out 110 psi measured it to make sure. I am running a nos .028 jet in a nos fan pattern nosle(spelling)
past that I dont know how much I am spraying. I will say that it dosent look like it is coming out as a fine mist lookes more like a lawn sprinkler BTWmy o2 volts are 900-915 no alky and 960-980 with alky is this to high?

what are your IC temps looking like?
you can still clean out the upper IC, the TB, and the intake

my ia temps are in the low 60s when I use the alky. And they start in the 80s and rise to about 100-110 . I just cleaned all that.

I have dm files I can send if somone would like to look at them.

If your alky is shooting out like a lawn sprinkler, well.... Not ideal.
Too much alky causes mis fires, narrow your gap, or get a smaller jet.

I wouldnt use alky to cover up a knock issue, I'd use it to extend the operating parameters ( higher boost without knock) of a already good setup.

Get your truck running right at 15 psi, then introduce the alky.

I will try to find a smaller jet . What would cause it not to be a fine mist like it would be if it was ideal? could it be the nossle?

Maybe you missed the point of my post.

Get it right before introducing the alky.

The jet is prolly too big, for the pressure/flow of the pump.

Try a jet about half the size you have now.

just puled the wires out and checked them with a volt/ohm meter and they seem to be allright. what could be wrong with them?

Just replaced the wire from the coil to the dis. Alongwith the coil from gm and a new ing module. did 3 new dm runs I am still getting 3-6 deg kr. I turned the alky off for now to try to get this kr to go away. but it just wont. I am only running 14.3 psi of boost and I have tryied the fp from50-65 psi base and it doesnt seam to make a defernce o2 volts are now in the 960 range without the alky. what do I try next? THIS SHIT IS GETTING OLD

I might be all wet here but i have my own personal theiry on this knock problem.

And it goes kinda like this.

After you have exhausted all the things you can check, and replaced everything you can replace, and youve made sure everything is tite and not something banging or hangin loose on the motor, and your sure its not something in the exhast or the trans, or the tc. then there is probably only one more question that needs to be answered (this is were i am probably all wet)

But anyway, many of these trucks have upwards of 100k on them and many are well over 50k. I have to wonder if the kr many experience here isnt simply becuase the motors eventually get tired. And although they dont see oil consumption on the stick between oil changes, they are infact sucking more oil from blowby than they did when new.

As we all now know oil lowers your octane rating, and lower octane gives you knock.

So my question here is how many miles are on this motor?

No flames please!

Likei said its my own personal theory that causes this problem for many on here.

Btw, I worked my ass off this past summer and falled to eliminate the kr on my original motor. I never did manage to get it to zero. I made some improvement, like wacking a full second off my ET, but even with my best of 13.4 on the stock motor with 100k on it Kr still kept me from being able to get more out of it. I had cleaned the intake spotlessly when i had it off and a month later it was back to looking oil soaked even though i had no oil consumption on the stick between changes. Btw, when i took the old motor out, there was oil dripping on the backside of the TB.

anyway thats my theory, so how many miles are on this motor?

Ed there are 82,480.7 miles on the clock. As for blowby I have moved the pcv's to the drivers side. That was a consern and I got tired of cleaning the upper intake.

try like a .014 or a .016 jet

Bdubb do they make them that small the smallest I have found here is a.028?

I am going to try xylene this weekend at the track And see if it will all go away I dont know what I will do if it does. That will meen that it is real kr And not false. I have as of yet not heard it knock or ping a single time.

maverick!!!! maverick maverick

you just said it yourself!

82k and you got tired of cleaning the intake!

moving the pcv's still alow oil to enter the intake and this lowers the octane rating!

btw with the oil sucking into the engine increasing the octane will not compensate from my liminted experience.

So far in my mind my theiry on older motors and kr is holding true.

However I hope for mavericks sake i am wrong but i dont think so.

Now if i am right maverick this give you a very good excuse you can use on the wife.

"hey honey i got good news and bad news. the good news is I think i can finally fix my truck by redoing the motor." The bad news is your gonna have to tell her she cant go shopping for a couple months cuz the money is going into your new motor!

Ed I wish I could redo the motor!! BUT it is hard enough suporting me the wife and three kids. The only reason I can work on me truck is because I can get the parts at work.looks like it is time to do a compression test :(
I guess I could jest run it without oil that way none gets sucked into the motor  Also when I said I was tired of cleaning the upper intake I have only cleaned it 2 times ine 20000 miles

like i said i might be wrong. hoefuplly others will start to comment about my theory with age, oil and octane.

not saying your wrong just hoping you are :-? But like you said If you have replaced every thing that just leaves bad news

If you have checked all other electrical issues, try changing the iridium plugs. On my stocker, knock and ET increased with the UR6IX's. After 45 minutes I switched back to the UR5's. Knock went away... as did .3 sec in the 1/8th. Almost new set for sale if anybody is interested.

Well, Iwent to the track sat. I tried xylene kr went away for the mostpart made 5 passes. First pass was on 13 psi I went 8.58@80 in the 1/8 and 11.05@91 in 1000'. Last pass on 18 psi went 8.11@83.4 1/8 and 10.54@93 in 1000' Last pass went 1.72 60' 8) swo I guess I will try the ur5 and see what happens.
