Truck Almost Finished!

Next week my truck should be finished, untill I break something. I'll have the SC-61 with front mount intercooler, stall, headers, alcohol injection, and all the little goodies that support the upgrades. I'm not sure how fast the truck will be and I can't help but wonder what it will feel like. Is anyone on the forum running a simular set up? I will be taking it to the track as soon as it's ready and finding a dyno to put it on soon. I dont know how much boost the motor will support. I'll probably start out with 10 - 12 lbs and increase from there in small incriments.

at 10-12 psi you'll probably get beat by a good running stock Sy :rotf: With stock heads you need BOOST( only speaking from experience with my GN and SVO). IMO that turbo and alky, hmmmmm 22-24 psi. Better have everything "right". Boost isn't what hurts the motor it's detonation. At 10-12 psi your motor *may* take a little detonation and survive. Running 24psi, no room for error ;) I ASSume :D someone else is doing the work?

Re: Truck Almost Finished!

I respect everyones opinion, but there is no way that 10-12 lbs of boost with a SC-61 and air to air intercooler with alcohol injection will get out performed by a good running stock sy using equivilent boost settings. It was to my thinking that's what I upgraded for. Polk Performance here in Benton, AR is doing the work, and he seems to think the truck will be a beast when we get done. I guess we will wait and see, but I can tell you that if when I get finished with the truck and it doesn't perform better than a stock syclone, there will be a very expensive syclone for sale in Arkansas.

Re: Truck Almost Finished!

What he's saying is you can put the biggest turbo in the world on there, but with the stock heads you aren't going to move any more air through the engine at 12 psi then a stock turbo will, because the stock turbo is already pushing the stock heads. Turning the boost up will stuff more air into the motor, and that is where your power will be at.

Alky and A2A do help to lower IAT's, that will be a power adder for you no matter what your boost looks like

How much boost will a stock motor hold? I heard these motors statr breaking at about 450 hp. I plan to get vortech fully ported heads, but the 10 grand I spent for all this other stuff broke me for now. Polk performance will be tuning the truck with some software he has by seat of pants untill he gets his AWD dyno in a couple of months.

Why did you use a SC-61? Isn't that the PTE line up for Sport Compact and small displacment motors?

Never heard of them, good luck.

Re: Truck Almost Finished!

He felt the SC-61 would be an all around turbo for fast spool up with minimal lag. The larger turbos, which makes lots more power, have bigger lag and my motor only revs to 4500? I have a freind who is using a SC-61 on a Lexus SC300 with a 2jz swap, and is making 700 with nitrous and 600 without. My truck will be driven daily, so I wanted to keep it somewhat streetable. I hope this turbo will be what we think it is and if not I can always get a bigger one.

Re: Truck Almost Finished!

-tuning by someone that has no experience with sytys
-a sport compact turbo on a built 4.3
this could either be really interesting or just go boom real fast.

I bought a PT-61 BB so I understand where your coming from. I just would have used a larger exhuast side. A 3L motor a lot different than 4.3L.

"truck almost finished" I have no concept of what that even means. I always find something in need of work and time. That's good for you though, post your results from the track, Datamaster, tuning, ect, ect, always interested what others are achieving with their mod list.

It looks like their are two exhuast housing .48 and .63 for the SC-61 (FYI The PTE SyTy Exhuast housing is .85), I think the larger on might actually work out fine for stock cam and heads and its anemic air flow. I would think it would start being a restriction on a motor with upgrade heads and aftermarket cam.

new builds are always cool to hear about.. hopefully it works out and is successful in producing the power you want.

Re: Truck Almost Finished!

I am not posting to brag on how fast I think my truck will be. I hope it will be faster than befor or i'll feel really stupid for spending all that money. The truck doesn't feel fast to me now, but I just came out of a 600 hp SRT-4 street beast built by Polk Performance, so maybe that's the reason it feels slow. I'm just wanting to make some HP gains and make the truck fun to drive and maybe beat up on some V-8's. I will post some numbers on the finished product and let you guys know how it runs. If someone will tell me how to post pics, I will do that too.

I don't think we think you are trying to brag.. I think we are trying to suggest that you are using untested components that could end up disappointing you.. As for the shop, I'm sure they are very knowledgable and skilled, these trucks are very tempermental and usually the more someone has worked with them the better they are at getting them running.

Re: Truck Almost Finished!

If you are really careful about watching for knock / detonation I believe the stock motor has been taken as far as 27psi on a track... I wouldn't run more than 20psi on the street.... speaking of which, I street a truck with 492hp as basically a daily driver, and it's very well mannered (except the computer doesn't like my cam too much so I have some hot idle problems)

You didn't mention whether you had an aftermarket ECU, or were still using the stock one?

Either way, how it runs depends a *lot* on the quality of the tune, and know-how of the tuner.
You can throw 50k at a build- it'll get beat by a stock Honda if the tune is poor.

The number of people in the *world* that I would trust with a Sy/Ty ECU, I can count using fingers.

Re: Truck Almost Finished!

wasn't trying to start anything, just saying if you really are running alky inj, larger turbo, front mount and 10-12 psi you're probably going to be disappointed(and probably beat by stock trucks running 14-15psi ;) ). Now,,,,turn yours up to 22psi or so and watch out! I'm sure your mechanic knows what they're doing if they've built 600hp SRT-4
Good luck,,, Ross
