Well, I'm having my 700R4 rebuilt, I found a local shop with a good rep for performance transmissions. I have no idea how much power I'm gonna be making, but my compression is around 8.7:1, L-35 heads, stock cam, stock turbo (20G soon) planning on running 20psi w/meth. new crank, h beams...

What should I make sure gets replaced in the transmission, I've always heard soemthing about the #1 sprag, but am unsure of what that is. I'm pretty sure I don;t need a stronger front pump, nor any mods to my vavle body, but I was jsut looking for some advice.

Shop wants 1200 for the rebuild, including 5 gear planatarys and stronger 'stuff'

I would do some research on here before you take it to a local shop.

Look up the venders here and use one of them they know how these trucks work and what needs to be done to the trans to make them to last.

I knew there were alot of engine builders but I didn't realize there were tranny builders

It seems lik eit woul dbe a bitch to have to ship my trans to cali, break it within a year, adn then for a warrenty ship it back to cali, local I can deal with, but, is there anyone close to michigan that has a good rep for trannies?

You have some choices that are closer than cali.

You have Rossler transmissions.
RPM Transmission in i think Indiana
Of course RPM that is in Cali.
Waller that is SC.
and several others Like i said the search button will be your friend. Also if the local shop says it will warrenty it they will more than likely try to fix it the first time it break probaly with in a week or 2 after the install and then after the first time they will say it was your fault and void the warrenty then you out $1500 or more. It has happened plenty of times before.

Not to mention the fact that a shop unfamiliar with the SyTy specific 700R4 will probably remove your SyTy specific parts (valve body, governor etc.) and sell you generic 700R4 internals that don't fit our application.

SyTy specific trans parts are hard to find so don't lose the ones you already have.

I've done it the right way before and I have done it the wrong way before.

RPM or Rossler would be my suggestion if I was in your position. My white ty I rebuilt myself but its a stock truck and I had to pull it out twice due to my own mistakes. Its working great now knock on wood.

My black truck even with the 80e had issues. Rossler fixed them and I am VERY happy with his work. yes it cost a few bucks but the trans hasn't been removed since and I don't worry about it.

theres a few great 700r4 guys in michigan Joels on joy, detroit gearbox, Old school builders who know their shit

I'm not thinking I really need to go to a 5 planatery setup, staying more local would be best I think. Indiana might not be to bad, depending on where. I'll have to look into your suggestions ken, have you ever had a tranny built locally by chance for one of your trucks?

Nope knock on wood Ive never broke a trans for one of these trucks and before beavis chimes in yes they dont get driven alot , I do have a good syclone trans if you need to borrow one to keep the truck on the road

I do know of Joel's on Joy, he actually builds all of Jeremy's drag racing transmissions. Not sure what he does for 700's.

The local guy that is convient for you, often times becomes the biggest local mistake you can make. Just seen it happen more times than not in my 13yrs of syty life.

This local guy does all the trannys for the local track guys and they all seem to love him, I know that he builds really strong powerglides and Th series trans, The guy next door to me ran his 2 speeds all the way down into the 8 second range (they didn't last long their though...) I'll have to talk to rpm in indiana, or wait for someone on the forum to be selling a built trans.

I'm afraid of borrowing a trans, I do appreciate the offer, and it would make things alot easyor, but what if it breaks, then I have to build a second one.

Well, I have email TJ at RPM, I'll have to see what he says. as for the offer ken, while I;m breaking the motor in it might not be a bad thing, unlikly to cause any damage, i'll have to talk more with you about it, depending on how lon git will take to get my trans done.

I'm also thinking, ,I'm mechnically inclined, good reading and comp skills, I've rebuilt motors with success, clean, organized and tideous, what are my odds with rebuilding it myself with success?

Get a good book, its not rocket science. Be ready to accept a redo if you screw something up though. Just part of the learning process.

Thats how we learn, trying something we have never done before. I have a theory I learn more from mistakes than doing things right. So go make mistakes.

where would be a good place to get parts, It seems like I've seen posts on parts for trannys before on here, but I was wondering if there was a known company I should trust?
